1 Report on KBC Sports Camp held at Banda, Uttar Pradesh (UP) Overview The third Kadam Badhate Chalo (KBC) sports camp was held in Banda, Uttar Pradesh from the 25th to the 28th of January, The camp was a joint initiative of PRIA (Society for Participatory Research), MFF (Martha Farrell Foundation), PSD (Pro Sport Development) and ABSSS (Akhil Bharatiya Samaj Sewa Sansthan). The camp saw the participation of a total of 74 youth, with 33 girls and 41 boys. Among the total number of participants, 34 were between the ages of years, whereas 40 were between the ages of years. The camp was led by PSD s trainers Rajeev Nath and Tempa Hansdah, while being supported by local partners ABSSS. The camp was implemented according to the age groups of the participants. The participants in the years age group were led by Tempa Hansdah, whereas

2 the participants in the years age group were led by Rajeev Nath. Both age groups were engaged in a total of 5 sessions over the 4 days, each session lasting for a duration of hours.

3 Activities Conducted Day 1 As the PSD trainers were travelling from Chitrakoot to Banda in the morning of the 25 th of January, the first day of the camp only managed one session in the afternoon. The session started with a couple of ice-breaker games, including Group Juggling and Line Up, for both the age groups, to familiarize the participants with each other, as well as the trainers, and get comfortable of being in their groups. This was followed by games and activities focused on Teamwork, with the years age group getting involved in games such as Team Relays, Ball Tag, and Beat the Ball, whereas the years age group got involved in games such as Circle Dodgeball, Volleyball Tennis and Hand Hockey. The idea behind these games was to ensure the youth worked together in teams to achieve common targets, and understood the value of working in a team to achieve their goals.

4 Day 2 Kadam Badhate Chalo As the 2 nd day of the camp was Republic Day, there was no morning session. The afternoon session focused on the area of Communication, where the year old participants played games such as Not in My House, Ten Pass Handball and Norwegian Ball, whereas the years age group were engaged in games such as Blindfold Course, Get Rid and Bulldog. These games focused on ensuring the participants used various forms of communication among themselves, which helped in making their tasks easier to complete. After the sessions, the participants were part of a Q&A session regarding Teamwork, where they had to pen down answers on the lessons they learnt during the games played, how these helped them during the games they played, and how they could utilize these in their daily lives.

5 Day 3 The morning of the 3 rd day of the camp focused once more on Teamwork. In this session, the year olds played games including Circle Doge Ball, Hand Hockey and Continuous Cricket, whereas the year group played games including Continuous Cricket and Team Dodgeball. The morning sessions ended with the year old with a Q&A about Teamwork, where the youth discussed and penned down answers regarding the lessons they learnt during the Teamwork sessions, how these helped in the various sports they played and how they can have an impact in their daily lives. The afternoon session of the 3 rd day focused on the area of Communication. The year old group was involved in the games Get Rid, Multiple Touches Volleyball and Bulldog whereas the year old group were engaged in Rugby Bulldog and Multiple Touches Volleyball. Furthermore, for the old group the session ended with Q&A s on Communication in which the youth had a discussion and jotted down answers regarding the lessons learnt during the Communication activities and how they could use the skill of communication to benefit them in their daily lives.

6 Day 4 Kadam Badhate Chalo The last day of the camp had only one session, due to the evening departure of the trainers. The session, carried out in the morning, focused on the aspect of Leadership. In this session, the games included were Dragon s Tail, Hand Hockey Captains and Continuous Cricket Captains for the year old group, whereas the year old group played only Continuous Cricket Captains and Hand Hockey Captains. The last session ended with a Q&A session on Leadership with the year olds, where they were asked to jot down answers about their understanding on Leadership, what they learnt about Leadership from the activities and how they could utilize it in their daily lives.

7 Impact & Lessons Team mein sab ko sab par vishwash hona chahiye Rohit, year male participant; (Every team member should trust each other). Apne sabhi khiladiyon ke ache pardeshan ke liye utsahit karne aur apno ki yogita pachana - Pooja, year female participant; (It s important to encourage team members and also understand every members ability) The participants thoroughly enjoyed the sessions in the sport camps. The boys previously hadn t played games like these, and the girls hadn t previously played any sports along with boys. Initially, many of the girls were shy and didn t communicate much within the groups. Some girls felt out of place, as they assumed they cannot play with boys who were physically stronger. But after a few games, the girls became familiar with the games and actively participated in them,

8 which helped them to become more confident. The boys played an inherent part in the team and supported the girls when needed during the various games and activities. Moreover, there was a good spirit of competition amongst the participants in the camp. Some of the participants had a notion that they will be selected for local or district teams by the PSD trainers. This was one of the main motives for them to join the games, not knowing that the training focused on learning life skills such as Teamwork, Leadership and Communication, through sport and physical activity. Interestingly, some feedback was also received from the onlookers of the local community, who were against the idea of boys and girls playing together, as they felt that this is opposing traditional Indian culture. Moreover, some of the onlookers were against boys of different castes playing together in the same activities.

9 The analysis at the end of the sessions, and discussions with the youth during the games, has helped the participants further understand the concepts of Teamwork, Communication and Leadership. The youth enjoyed playing in a team and understood that Teamwork is a key ingredient for achieving a common goal, and using it effectively enhances performance within a team. They also realized the importance of encouraging each member of the team and not being dependent on an individual. Moreover, they were of the opinion that utilizing the principles of teamwork can simplify tasks when implemented in their day to day lives. The youth also realised that Communication is an important tool to work well within a team, and that communicating effectively can help individuals become more competent in their tasks. Moreover, they acknowledged that a leader has responsibilities while leading a team, and is key to discussing strategies with their team to implement in the games played as well delegate responsibilities to members in the team by correctly identifying one s ability and capacity.

10 Challenges & Future Improvements Initially the girls found it challenging to play the various games with the boys, as they were a bit shy because they are not used to interacting with the boys on a regular basis. Moreover, some of the boys were also passing remarks about the girls in relation to their ability to participate in physical activity and sport. The participants of the youth camp need to be made aware of the basic rules to be followed for equal participation of girls in the sporting activities. This can be done in the future by a de-briefing by the PSD team on arrival, as well as an earlier orientation by the local partners. The other challenge was that the participants found some of the games to be difficult, as they were not used to participating in activities like that. For the future, some of the games need to be simplified to ensure the effective delivery of the focus area. Another concern was that the same group of participants were not present for all the sessions conducted by PSD trainers, which made it difficult to conduct the session and harder to get the focus areas across to the participants. To enhance the impact of the program, the same group of participants should be present at the camp of the entire duration, and this should be ensured by the local partners. Being present for all the sessions of the camp would also help the youth to better understand the various games and take away various lessons in the different focus areas.
