2 Inuit population is approx. 50,500 and live in the north as well as anywhere in Canada.
3 Jobs Nunavut has a wide range of full time, permanent and casual nursing job opportunities. We have opportunities to practice nursing in our hospital and clinic in Iqaluit, our regional health centers in Rankin Inlet and Cambridge Bay and our community health centers. Community Health Nurse Home Care Nurse Public Health Nurse General Duty Nurse Registered Nurse Ward Operating Room Nurse Emergency/Outpatient Nurse Other nursing supervisory, Clinical Educator, Midwife, Nurse Practitioner and/or specialized nursing opportunities such as a Psychiatric Nurse are also available.
4 Gracy D cunha, Community Health Nurse, Rankin Inlet Patricia Walsh, Community Health Nurse, Sanikiluaq Community Health Nurses provide primary health care to people in the communities with a unique set of advanced assessment skills which can be relayed to a physician on call if needed. Physician referrals are often done via telephone as the physician does not live in the community.

6 Home Care Nurse The Home Care Nurse provides nursing and support services to elderly, chronically ill and disabled clients. In order to be considered for a Home Care Nursing position you will be required to have a Nursing Diploma or BScN, valid CPR, current or eligible for RNANT/NU registration, a valid driver s licence, two years of experience and the ability to work in a cross-cultural setting.
7 Depending on the size of the community, the Home Care Nurse also supervises 2-7 Home and Community Care Workers who are locally hired, bilingual or unilingual (in Inuktitut). The Home and Community Care Workers provide home support and personal care to home ridden individuals who have been admitted into the Home and Community Care Program. Some can also be trained to give po medications.
8 I provide Home and Community Care Services in the community of Rankin Inlet. Working closely with the Health Centre and other health care professional, I provide nursing care to home ridden individuals who have been admitted into the home care program. I have 7 staff who work under my Supervision, in addition, I supervise the Home Care Services provided via the Health Care Department in the Communities of Chesterfield Inlet, and Sanikiluaq.
9 Public Health Nurse The Public Health Nurse assists clients in the protection, restoration and promotion of health to prevent and reduce the incidence of disease, disability and death. To be considered for a Public Health Nurse position you must have a BScN or approved equivalent plus a minimum of 1-2 years application of nursing theory and the nursing process in a public health or related environment. You will be registered with or eligible for registration with the RNANT/NU, have a current CPR certificate and a valid driver s licence.
10 Charlotte is an Inuk nurse who also grew Up in Rankin Inlet. She started off as a Community Health Nurse and is now the Public Health Manager in Rankin Inlet. Her and her husband have 4 daughters.
11 General Duty Nursing Nurses in the hospital work in four key areas - the Ward, OPD/Emergency, Patient Case Management and the Operating Room. Nurses in the hospital are expected to work in multi-faceted roles. There is an emphasis on training to ensure that nurses can adapt quickly to a variety patient care scenarios. You will be registered with or eligible for registration with the RNANT/NU and have current a CPR certificate.

13 Rankin Inlet has a 10 bed hospital, with 2 pediatric beds and 1 palliative care room. Laboraty services as well as x-ray services are available 1 emergency room with room for 2 beds if needed. 1 procedure room often used by visiting specialist such as internal med, ophthalmology etc.

15 QGH is a 35 bed hospital in Iqaluit, Nu. 4 birthing rooms The hospital houses Diagnostic Imaging and Laboratory facilities and a new Emergency Room, Operating Room and facilities for Day Surgery.

17 Registered Nurse Ward Ward nurses provide obstetrical, pediatric, medical/surgical and palliative care to inpatients. Shifts are 12-hours on a rotational basis. Ward nurses require a nursing degree with a minimum one year recent broad-based acute care nursing experience and a current CPR certificate. Obstetrical and pediatric experience is preferred.

19 Operating Room Nurse OR nurses provide care in the Operating Room and in the Post Operative Recovery Room. At times, OR nurses are required to perform general nursing duties on the Adult and Pediatric Wards. OR nurses require a nursing degree, a current CPR certificate and at least one year of recent OR experience. Post graduate OR training is an asset.

21 Emergency/Outpatient Nurse Nurses who work in the Emergency/Outpatient department provide care to patients on an emergency basis and to ambulatory patients on an outpatient basis. A nursing degree and a current CPR certificate with a minimum of two years recent acute care nursing experience, including at least one year of emergency experience, is required. Preference is given to nurses who have completed courses in Patient Assessment, Trauma Management, ACLS and PALS.

24 X-ray room in Sanikiluaq This is the x-ray/lab room in Sanikiluaq, typical of the smaller health centres in the small communities in Nunavut.
25 This is an x-ray developer used to develop films after the Community Health Nurse is done doing an x-ray. The x-rays are then sent to a southern hospital for the radiologist to interpret. The report is then sent to the corresponding community.
26 Median Age: 24.1 yrs with a population of 31, 910 in Nunavut Smoking: percentage of daily smokers from the 10 largest communities in Nunavut total 60% BMI: out of 10 largest communities 58% are overweight According to the Cancer Registry, a total of 134 cases of lung Ca were dx d in Nunavut between 1988 and 1997 accounting for 34%

28 of the 354 cancer cases documented over the decade. In the Qikiqtaaluk region alone, lung Ca accounted for 42% of all dx d Ca s. In Canada as a whole, lung Ca represents 16% of all Ca s during the same period. 29 Increased and improved research with an Inuit-specific focus is needed to understand the rising incidence of cancer the population is experiencing. Most North American research on Inuit and cancer is recent, and relies on very small samples. Research has been further constrained by the fact that most cancer data records do not identify ethnicity, making it impossible to isolate information on Inuit cancer rates. ITK.
