MCA Tier 2 Task Record Book Completion Courses. Skippers intending to undertake their BoatMasters Licence for Category A and B Waters will have to present a completed MCA Task Record Book with their examination application. We offer one or two day boat handling sessions on Category A Waters, during which time a Task Record Book can be completed. The Task Record Book will provide a clear, personal record of training undertaken, which may be valuable if Skippers change vessels or employers. It will also provide information for the BML examiner, who may refer to it during the on-board practical/oral assessment. Subjects include; Bridge Watchkeeping Meteorology Ship Manoeuvring Vessel Handling in Extreme Weather Mooring and unmooring a vessel Ropework and Access Ship Knowledge Basic Engineering and Machinery Health and Safety Emergency Action Pollution Prevention and Waste Management Generic Chartwork Locks and Bridges
RYA First Aid Certificate Designed for boaters and covering the basics of First Aid with particular emphasis on accidents on or around the water. Our one-day course covers all the usual first aid subjects, but from a boating perspective. It is aimed at anyone who goes afloat, whether on inland waters, rivers, estuaries or on cross channel passages. In a medical emergency a little first aid knowledge and immediate action can save lives, especially in remote locations. This one-day course is designed to provide a working knowledge of first aid for people using small craft and to support skippers. It fulfils the requirements for: Professional skippers of small craft working within 60 miles of a safe haven, including Boatmasters; The Senior First Aid certificate needed by offshore racers subject to ISAF's regulations on first aid training (OSR ). The course is recommended by the MCA and HSE. The subjects specific to boating include: The recovery position in a confined space CPR, including the drowning protocol Cold shock and hypothermia from immersion and/or exposure Seasickness and dehydration Medical assistance or advice by VHF Helicopter rescue
National Community Boat s Association; Boat Handling Course & Certificate of Community Boat Management Boat Handling This course is delivered by an approved NCBA trainer in preparation for a group taking a boat out on the inland waterways of the UK. The course is designed to minimise potential risks and provide a level of knowledge and skill to the boat operators, helping to ensure a safe, enjoyable boating experience. Certificate in Community Boat Management Fully endorsed by British Waterways and recommended as an inland waterways qualification in the Small passenger Boat code issued by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency, the course draws on current best practice as supplied by member organisations of the NCBA. The aim of the course is to give operators of boats on non-tidal waterways, training in boat handling, boat maintenance and the management of group safety and welfare. Anyone over the age of eighteen can obtain a CCBM Certificate, It is however expected that you will have some experience of working with groups and have previous practical experience of boating. Successful candidates qualify to operate boats with a maximum of 12 passengers, on non-tidal inland waterways in the UK.
Single Handed Boating Techniques. An Advanced Two Day Course There are going to be occasions when you are boating on your own whether by choice or necessity. The confidence to manage this successfully only comes from practice in a controlled environment.
Working on a one on one basis, this course has been developed as a progression towards a BoatMasters Licence yet is not a recognised qualification in itself. It will however, equip the candidate with the skills and experience, to be able to deal with most scenarios, calmly and on their own. Syllabus includes; Taking over the vessel Health & Safety & the environment Basic First Aid Water Safety Fire Awareness Collision Prevention Rope work Leaving the Mooring Getting Underway and handling Moving along the waterway Effect of Wash Propeller Effect Emergency Stop & Reversing Standing Off Man Overboard Use of Life Saving Appliances Locks Mooring Collision Grounding Engine Failure Steering Failure Winding Swing and lift bridges Fixed bridges Tunnels Other navigational problems
Inland Waterway s Association Certificate of Boat Management The Inland Waterways Association Certificate of Boat Management scheme applies to Operators of Small Passenger Boats operating Trip Boats on certain prescribed Inland Waterways of Britain. The majority of these Trip Boats are operated by volunteers as fund raising enterprises for charities and trusts or to promote their waterway. The scheme is NOT designed to apply to scheduled Public Transport Service operations. The scheme ensures that: ertification of persons Managing & Steering Small Passenger Boats is achieved through a system of structured training & assessment Passenger Boats carrying not more than 12 passengers on Category A Waters (narrow & shallow, low risk) as defined by the MCA & crew safety within the identified area of operation The Inland Waterways Association represents the operators of fund raising and educational trip boat operations. The IWA Certificate of Boat Management provides a system of accreditation that is structured, appropriate, affordable & auditable.
The scheme is designed to ensure that such Trip Boat operations are run to the highest standards of safety within the area in which they operate. The scheme is approved by The Maritime & Coastguard Agency. The Inland Waterways Association Boat Management Certificate Scheme uses a system of twelve elements referred to as Gateways which, taken together, provide the quality assurance of the operation. The full requirements of each element must be met and validated. 1. Risk Assessment & Method Statement 2. Local Area Evaluation & Emergency Services Plan 3. Operational Best Practice & Safety Procedures Manual 4. Medical Fitness of Steerer - Self Certification 5. Steerer s Qualification 6. Personal Safety 7. First Aid Training 8. Fire Safety 9. 9 HSE Approved 3 day First Aid at Work course This is a newly developed, combined; HSE Approved - First Aid at Work and HSE approved Manual Handling course. The course is aimed at canal and river users, in either the commercial or voluntary sectors. Emphasis is on crush injuries, near drowning and other waterways related injuries. The delivery of this new and exciting First Aid at Work course has been designed to follow the guidelines and criteria of the nationally recognised, Level 3 QCF Award, meeting the 1981 Health & Safety Regulations. The syllabus also includes Manual Handling and Fire Awareness training in the marine environment, covering situations including crush injuries, major impact trauma, acute lifting accidents and fire on board situations. The bolt on, one day, Manual Handling course, graded at a Level 2 QCF Award not only meets HSE recommendations, but also promotes good and safe practises in any situation Core topics within First Aid are included, such as resuscitation, secondary assessment, recovery position in limited spaces, chronic medical conditions, as well as specialist burns, all delivered in a manner to ensure course participants understand relevance to inland and open water scenarios The courses will be delivered in a manner to engage all participants over the duration of the course. The HSE approved course furthers the basic First Aid techniques, covered by the RYA s one day First Aid course.
