Dear Parents/Carers, Thank you for your valued enquiry regarding St Osmund s Preschool Charity. We hope that this booklet will provide you with some of the information you need to know about us. The staff and I were thrilled with our Ofsted grade of Outstanding. As a not for profit charity preschool we are privileged to be on the site of St Osmund's Primary school. We are a non-denomination preschool and are truly multi-cultural with 15 different languages spoken within the preschool. The manager is an Early Years Teacher and all the Early Years practitioners are level 3 trained or working towards a level 3 and who wish to drive up standards of care and education in the settings for children of 2 5 years. The manager has taught within Primary and Secondary school and has spent a number of years managing early year s settings too. St Osmund s Pre-School is a Company Registered by Guarantee: Registeed Charity Number: , Ofsted URN EY357437
OFSTED and EYFS At ST OSMUNDS PRESCHOOL we are setting that is established we have been meeting the needs of the children in the community for over 20 years. A setting must be inspected by Ofsted on registration, to ensure that the facilities and staff are suitable for childcare and that appropriate safeguarding measures are in place. We have an OUTSTANDING grade by Ofsted which means we provide outstanding care and education for your child and our families. You can learn more about the EYFS at the following website: ST OSMUNDS PRESCHOOL works under the umbrella of the national Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS, 2014), which is guided by four themes: Clear and consistent assessments methods, together with highly effective monitoring systems, enable staff to quickly identify any gaps in children s learning and development, and provide extra support. Ofsted inspection report May 2016 St Osmund s Pre-School is a Company Registered by Guarantee: Registeed Charity Number: , Ofsted URN EY357437
EARLY YEARS CURRICULUM The EYFS (2014) curriculum is based around seven areas of learning and development. For children under two, we concentrate on three Prime Areas: Communication and Language Personal, Social and Emotional Development Physical Development These areas cover the knowledge and skills required to form the foundations of formal learning. The Prime Areas develop through effective relationships and experiences, supporting learning in all others areas and remain fundamental throughout the EYFS. The four Specific Areas of learning and development grow from the Prime Areas and provide important opportunities for extending knowledge: Literacy Mathematics Understanding the World Expressive Arts and Design At ST OSMUND'S PRESCHOOL we use regular observations of children as they play, learn and socialise to highlight their current interests and learning or development aims. These observations inform the children s individual planning and help us to track their progress as well as identify specific needs. Each groups planning is displayed in the preschool and used by the staff to map out a set of weekly activities focused around children s next steps and interests. Each child s progress is individually assessed and recorded on a regular basis through observations and additional assessments, their learning journals and through termly summative assessment progress report. St Osmund s Pre-School is a Company Registered by Guarantee: Registeed Charity Number: , Ofsted URN EY357437
Curriculum, Planning and Assessment The Staff are fully aware of the importance of making learning fun and we endeavor to incorporate the children s learning in a relaxed atmosphere. We present a wide range of activities, which promote your child s physical, intellectual, emotional and social skills as well as language development. These skills will be developed through both organised and free play, which stimulates initiative, intuition and imagination. Each day the children participate in some form of physical activity in either the community centre or sea cadets hall. Activities include movement to MUSIC, DANCE, GYMNASTICS, YOGA or ring games. No extra costs to parents. We encourage creativity by offering a different activity each day in your child s key group. These include painting, gluing, and cutting. SCULPTURE CLAY, drawing and COOKING thereby allowing your child to explore and experiment with a wide and varied selection of materials. The children participate in Forest school off site which develop their understanding of the world around them using actual tools such as hammers, saws and drills. We also offer opportunities and experiences such as cooking and gardening. No extra costs to parents. Story-telling and singing are everyday occurrences thus encouraging language and intellectual skills and enhancing your child s confidence and ability to communicate. Plus intervention programs such as baby sign language Makaton, BLAST (boosting language auditory social talking) PSED SPARKLE TIME (personal social emotional development in small key groups) and other interventions St Osmund s Pre-School is a Company Registered by Guarantee: Registeed Charity Number: , Ofsted URN EY357437
FOREST SCHOOL We offer at ST OSMUND S PRESCHOOL Forest schools an excellent opportunity for play and exploration, however, practical tasks linked to the national curriculum and EYFS are designed to enhance children s development are what drives the forest school initiative. Many of the activities within forest schools are child-led, and the activities will follow the direction in which children choose to take them. They may decide to work independently, working on developing their own problem solving skills and creativity, or they may join up with other children and work within teams. This is excellent for children s social development, as they will learn how to collaborate within a team, and how to share their ideas and to listen to others
FOREST SCHOOLS Forest school at St Osmund s Preschool is a brilliant way of taking children and learning out of the preschool, and re-introducing them to the outdoors whilst helping all areas of their development. Children enjoy the freedom of directing their own learning without inhibitions and exploring and experiencing a new environment. Knowledgeable staff provide a stimulating environment, where children learn through play and meaningful experiences, both inside and out. Ofsted inspection report May 2016 Registered Charity Number: , Ofsted URN EY357437
Our Rooms Indoor & Outdoor Environments The children have access to free flow play choosing to play inside or out. The outside area reflects the seven areas of development demonstrated inside the preschool. The outside area is a safe, enclosed area along with an all-weather structure the children call The Tent. Children are able to access this area independently they are encouraged to take an interest in their world and care for nature through activities such as growing flowers, fruit and vegetables. The area has an area to garden, make mud pies in our mud kitchen and explore the woodland area and a use climbing frames. The playground allows gross motor development using bicycles and apparatus equipment. The Tent allows the children to access the area even if it is snowing where we bring the inside of the preschool outside. The tent, offers a wide choice of resources with many learning, social and physical opportunities. Registered Charity Number: , Ofsted URN EY357437
PARTNERSHIPS with PARENTS At ST OSMUND S PRESCHOOL we respect parents as their child s first and most enduring carers. From settling and day-to-day care to assessing and planning, we include and value parents input. It is important for children to witness the good relationships between parents and practitioners. As well as daily hand-over discussions and our open door policy, parents are invited for regular reviews on their child s progression we provides parents with private access to their own children s daily diary and developmental learning journey, as well as relevant Preschool policies and permissions. Staff promote extremely effective partnership with parents and other professionals, which contribute to helping them support each child to make rapid progress from their starting points. Ofsted inspection report May 2014
Our Preschool Toddlers (24 36) months) Our toddlers develop a thirst for learning as they independently investigate and carry out self-selected activities with experienced adult s on-hand to support their education. Low-level units enable the children to lead their own play agendas and learning journeys. Children make sense of their experiences through play, storytelling, songs and other creative means. Quiet spaces such as our book corner provide our toddlers with areas to be calm and relax concentrate on a task or chatter with their friends. Dinosaurs, shaving foam and role-play are favorite s activities with the toddlers! Children settle well because there is a positive relationship between their parents and the Pre-school. Ofsted inspection report, May 2016
Our Pre-School (36 48 months) Our Pre-school children enjoy a combination of child-initiated and adult-led activities. They are encouraged to make independent choices and develop their critical thinking. The room has defined areas of learning and activities are changed throughout the day depending on children s interests, requests and learning adventures. Children are regularly involved in musical activities as well as arts and crafts and opportunities to investigate, discover and experiment with their ideas. There is access to a PC and a range of ICT equipment. The children follow a slightly more structured routine including in the morning and afternoon to help prepare them for school. Management and staff continually evaluate and reflect on their practice to provide high quality provision and maintain constant improvement in outcomes for children, Ofsted inspection report May 2016
SPECIAL EDUCATIONAL NEEDS and DISABILITIES (SEND) Our SENCO Siddika Begum works closely with the manager and with all practitioners in the setting; has responsibility for the day-to-day operation of the setting s SEND policy and for co-coordinating provision across the setting; and for supporting colleagues in all aspects of their work with children with SEND. Please look on our website stosmundspreschoolandsunshineclubs.co.uk to read our local offer to families. ST OSMUND S PRESCHOOL believes that no child should be excluded from the Preschool s activities because the child has SEND as defined by the Children Act 1989 and the Education Unless we are unable to meet the child s needs and the child is suited to a opportunity centre. ST OSMUND'S PRESCHOOL will take every opportunity to ensure that the parent of a child with SEND is welcomed in the same manner as all other parents. We will aim to acquire the necessary information about the specific situation to further support the parents. ST OSMUND'S PRESCHOOL will offer staff training where possible to increase their knowledge and skills to ensure that each child is offered equal opportunities within the preschool. EQUAL OPPORTUNITIES ST OSMUND'S PRESCHOOL is committed to recognising and responding sensitively to the needs of any child or parent/guardian regardless of age, gender, class, family status, ability, disability, race, colour, ethnic origin, culture, religion or belief. ST OSMUNDS PRESCHOOL will accept people s differences and treat each person as an individual. ST OSMUNDS PRESCHOOL has a named Equality Needs Coordinator (ENCO) in line with Ofsted best practice. Behaviour We have a named practitioner responsible for behaviour in the Preschool and we work closely with parents for consistency. Behaviour strategies are age/stage appropriate as well as taking into consideration individual children s understanding and needs. Through activities, our children learn to be caring, thoughtful and accepting of others. Children are involved in decision and rule-making processes, giving them a sense of selfworth, ownership and inclusion
POLICIES, PROCEDURES and SAFEGUARDING Safeguarding children As part of the registration process we are duty bound to inform social services of any worries we may have regarding a child s welfare and safety. The Safeguarding Lead is Trudy Surman Security The security and safety of all the children in our care is our main priority. Therefore, we ask that you comply with our policies to guarantee this. When registering your child at ST OSMUNDS PRESCHOOL you will be given an area to fill in on the form. If we do not have this information on the form on file, your child WILL NOT be allowed to leave Preschool with ANYONE OTHER than the main carer. We also ask that appointments be made to view our Preschool as no one is allowed on the premises without a prior arrangement. However, once your child is registered with us, we are happy for you to visit at any time. Children are extremely well cared for by a team of staff who make their safety high priority and know them and their families exceptionally well as individuals. Ofsted inspection report May 2014
OUTINGS AND VISITORS We endeavor to provide our children with experiences to enhance their learning and knowledge of the world. As well as arranged and trusted visitors, such as owners of unusual pets or the police, we are fortunate enough to be well-located for taking the children on spontaneous outings into the local environment. For example, we may visit shops to buy fruit for fruit-painting, the local park or visit the library. Trips to the Cathedral and Museums to learn about our community and the environment. Regular visits to places in the local area provide children with interesting and additional life experiences, Ofsted inspection report May 2016
MEALS AND SNACKS The Preschool will provide breakfast, lunch, tea and mid-morning and afternoon snacks, for your child depending on their attendance times. The Preschool has a level 5 rating for food hygiene from our local authority. The Preschool has a small kitchen, so like many schools and nurseries we order our lunch from the school. The menus are displayed daily on our menu boards. Special diets can be catered for, on request. All of our staff hold up-to-date food hygiene certificates. Children visit the market every Tuesday to choose what fruit and vegetables they would like to snack. Staff sit with the children at meal times, and encourage quiet conversation. This makes it a social and cheerful time for children, which also helps to promote good eating habits and desirable table manners. The children can choose between bringing their own healthy packed lunch or having a school cooked lunch. Nappy Changing Potty Training Academy We are part of the academy that supports you through toilet training your child. This is a child-led program with home support. We have an area where nappies can be changed with privacy. You should supply spare clothes should accidents occur.
