1 SOPIS PARSONS SCHOOL OF DESIGN [summer 2008] SECTION D June 17-Aug. 7 Course title: Language and Culture of Design CRN: 1564 PNSO 0500 SOPIS, section A4 Course meeting time: Tuesday and Thursday, 4-6:50pm Classroom: 2 W13th, rm. L 504 Faculty name: Norene Leddy Contact info: , 66 th 5 th Ave., rm address: leddyn@newschool.edu Course Description Working in a friendly interdisciplinary studio environment, students will focus on working individually and in teams to identify and solve design problems. Throughout the course, students will use pigeons as a starting point to explore geography, history, and urban ecosystems. Using a variety of design methods and resources they will develop a final site-specific project, culminating in a performance, presentation and design critique. Field trips to museums and visits by artists and designers will enrich and enhance the students familiarity with the language and culture of design. Many of the resources will focus on conceptual public art, site-specific installations and interdisciplinary design. Students will be expected to consider these concepts throughout the course and apply them to the final project. Students will keep a sketchbook to document their ideas, experiences, and design iterations during the course. Course Goals Throughout the course students will: -Learn to identify and solve design problems through various forms of research and design methods -Experience and become comfortable with different formats of presentation and critique -Experience and become skilled in collaborative teamwork -Become comfortable in the Parsons environment and acquainted with school resources -Become familiar with New York City resources Upon completion of the course, students will be confident and prepared to enter the Parsons program. Bio Norene Leddy is a video and installation artist, currently living in Jersey City and working in Brooklyn. She received her BFA from Boston University (1994), and MFA from Parsons School of Design (2000). She has taught and lectured at Parsons School of Design, Massachusetts College of Art, Globe Institute of Technology, 92 nd St. Y, Framingham State College and Frederick Institute of Technology, Cyprus. Her work has been exhibited in New York and internationally, SOPIS 2008 Norene Leddy 1
2 and her awards include a Fulbright Fellowship to Cyprus ( ) and residencies at the Millay Colony for the Arts (1998), Eyebeam Center for Art and Technology (2006, 2008) and Gallery Aferro ( ). Basic Supply List -sketchbook (8.5 x 11in) -18 x 24 pad white drawing paper -roll of tracing paper (can be shared with other students) -roll of kraft paper (can be shared with other students) -2 sheets 8.5 x 11 (approx.) acetate -glue stick -pens, pencils -set of water soluble colored pencils (approx. 12) -3 good quality synthetic watercolor brushes, 2 rounds and 1 flat; (#8 / #12, recommended) -thin point permanent marker -2 T-shirts for stenciling -spray paint (wait to purchase, can be shared with other students) -3-ring binder notebook -CDs/DVDs as needed -digital still and video cameras (optional) Course Policies Academic Policy Students must report to class on time with their supplies and ready to work. Your attendance and arrival time will be monitored. In addition to the class time, you should also be prepared to complete out of class assignments and entries in your sketchbook. We look forward to a productive class; the success of the class is dependent on your attendance and active participation in the course. The due dates for your projects are final. Late projects will not be accepted. Absence Policy You are allowed to miss each class once. If you miss one of your classes more than once, you will automatically fail. 3 lates = 1 absence (late means arriving 10 or more minutes after the beginning of class) If you are sick, contact the SPACE office immediately ( ), and bring a note from your doctor or health services to class -- otherwise your absence counts as a no-show. Grading: This class is pass/fail. Your attendance, involvement in class discussions and critiques, effort and successful completion of all assignments are factors in your grade. 3 Attend every class. Complete all assignments on time, to the best of your ability. Contribute to all group discussions, and have constructive comments for all of your peers. Be self-motivated, working consistently and following through on the development of all projects. Look for inspiration through art/design related experiences outside of class such as exhibitions or books. Seek constructive solutions and improvements for each work. Seek information in and out of the classroom. Clean Up Cleaning up is vital. This classroom is shared, and nothing can be left on the walls or anywhere in the room. Anything left or forgotten will be thrown away. Please be respectful of your work, others and the facilities. Course Outline Week 1 June 17 & 19 Tuesday June 17 Objective: Introducing teamwork and observation; Exploring Art + Design in Manhattan 1. Meet on 4 th floor of 2 West 13 th Street, introduction to program. 2. Explore Manhattan in teams and complete collective exercise. Thursday June 19 Objective: Introduction to curriculum, research and observation methodologies, exploring drawing from observation as an analytical tool 1. Introduction & discussion: students will introduce themselves, and talk about their art and design experiences/backgrounds. 2. Review Manhattan tour and exercise. 3. Overview of curriculum and brief introduction to final project: Ask Me About Pigeons. 4. Review our class blog ( and Blackboard. 5. Tour of 55 West 13 th Street to check out equipment center and UCC computer resources. 6. Introduce Cornell Ornithology lab Pigeon Watch project. 7. Project 1: Direct Observation of Pigeons in Union Square Park With your partner, spend an hour in one place observing pigeons. Use the Pigeon Watch guide to determine the type and coloring, and fill out the 2-page Pigeon Watch data sheet. Make at least one drawing from observation, and answer the following questions in your sketchbook: -Does anyone feed them? If so, what do they look like (age, gender, etc.)? -What are your reactions to the pigeons (joy, disgust, fear, etc.)? -What are other people s reactions to the pigeons? -Is this different from your home country? Be prepared to present your drawings and writing to the class. SOPIS 2008 Norene Leddy 3
4 HW: Read Pigeons Wars article by Jon Mooallem, The New York Times. Prepare to discuss at length in class. Find 3 little known/unusual facts about pigeons, and post them to the Pigeon Facts Discussion in Blackboard. Week 2 June 24 & 26 Tuesday June 24 Objective: 2D mapping, psychogeography, alternative ways to present information 1. Review homework: reading, pigeon facts, signing out equipment 2. Lecture/discussion: psychogeography, Vito Acconci s Following Piece, Edward Tufte 3. Project 2: Pigeon Following Piece Class will be divided into 4 groups, and start in the 4 corners of Union Square Park. With your group, choose one specific pigeon to follow for one hour. Divide up the tasks, and document where the pigeon goes in real time with drawings and photographs, as well as an actual map. In class we will examine the data and look for patterns. HW: Assemble map data, photos and drawings into giant collage map of Union Square Park. Report for urban bird watch. Post pigeon facts to Blackboard. Sign out video cameras for class July 1. Thursday June 26 Objective: Research, 2D mapping, history and culture of pigeons 1. Discuss HW: Collage map, pigeon facts 2. Choose preliminary groups of 3-4 for final project. 3. Lecture/discussion: The History of Pigeons: From Noble Bird to Urban Pest 4. Screening/discussion: On the Waterfront : pigeon symbolism, pigeon culture, history of Hoboken, mafia, unions, ethics of keeping pigeons and pigeon racing HW: Next class we are taking a field trip to Hoboken. Prepare three questions to ask loft keeper Vinnie Torre. Read Hudson Reporter article Pigeon Days. Report for urban bird watch. Post pigeon facts to Blackboard. Week 3 July 1 & 3 Tuesday July 1 Objective: Research, history and culture of pigeons Project 3: Field trip to Hillside Loft Field trip to Hoboken's Hillside Loft at Fifth and Monroe streets, which is the reigning state champion pigeon loft. Each student must ask at least one of his or her questions. Document visit with notes, video, photos and drawings. HW: Design a T-shirt that celebrates the history of pigeons. This can include pigeons in mythology, pigeon racing, messenger pigeons in World War 2, etc. SOPIS 2008 Norene Leddy 4
5 Thursday July 3 Objective: Spreading the message 1. Lecture/discussion: graffiti tags, social protest and social practice artworks 2. Project 4: Pigeon T-Shirts Design a T-shirt that celebrates the history of pigeons. This can include pigeons in mythology, pigeon racing, messenger pigeons in World War 2, etc. Review T-shirt designs, color schemes. 3. Stenciling demo 4. Start cutting stencils, purchase spray paint HW: Finish T-shirts. Related reading. Prepare questions for guest speaker Al Streit from Pigeon People. Report for urban bird watch. Week 4 July 8 & 10 Tuesday July 8 Objective: Framing the final project: What do we want to say about pigeons? 1. Lecture/discussion: Pigeons in urban ecosystems 2. Screening/discussion: This American Life Iraqi booth project 3. Final Project: Ask Me About Pigeons Each group will design a booth, flyer, and T-shirt, and do a performance in Union Square Park. 4. Framing the final project: What do we want to say about pigeons? Groups we want to support? Population control methods? Colors, fonts or other themes to tie T-shirts, flyers, booth together? 5. Guest speaker Al Streit from Pigeon People. Each student must ask at least one of his or her questions. Document visit with notes, video, photos. HW: Written statement about final project, 3 paragraphs, typed.
