2 The School Curriculum What do we want for our children? National Curriculum (and the tests) should not be the only driver of what we teach in school Schools should not be a factory of knowledge/content Developing the whole child Growth mindset focus on effort and practice Engaging and rich experiences to inspire learning or to help children learn about themselves We believe that the single most important outcome that any primary school should strive to achieve is making sure as many of its pupils as possible are secondary ready by the time they leave Department for Education, 2013

4 The New National Curriculum September 2014: Introduced in year 1, year 3, year 4 and year 5 September 2015: Introduced in year 2 and year 6 Objectives now grouped into: Year 1 Year 2 Year 3/4 Year 5/6 Raise standards learning from the world s most successful school systems (Hong Kong, Finland) as well as more successful school in the UK
5 What does this mean for our children? Raise standards More challenging expectations Slimmer content (fewer objectives) Focus on core skills and subject knowledge What does that mean for our pupils? Fewer things in greater depth deep understanding Being really clear on the big ideas we want children to know Range of opportunities for children to apply knowledge/skills in different context
6 Key ideas: Enrichment weeks (Take One ) 1 week per half-term linked to stimulus Focus on using and applying previously taught knowledge, skills and understanding = rich assessment opportunities Enable teachers to assess how secure learning is/whether pupils can independently apply prior learning Enable teachers to use these assessments to feed into future teaching and learning Practical/hands-on/experience based
7 What are the main changes? ENGLISH Stronger emphasis on spelling, grammar, punctuation and spelling (e.g. commas and apostrophes now taught in KS1) Handwriting fluent, legible and speedy Spoken English debating and presenting skills Learning and reciting poems by heart
8 What are the main changes? MATHS Higher expectations throughout: 5 year olds expected to count to 100 (used to be 20) and learn number bonds to 20 (used to be 10) Simple fractions taught from Key Stage 1 By the age of 9 children expected to know 12 x 12 Greater emphasis on written arithmetic
9 What are the main changes? ICT Computing replaces ICT Greater focus on programming rather than on operating programmes From age 5, pupils will learn to write and test simple programs and to organise, store and retrieve data Internet safety to be taught in all primary schools
10 What are the main changes? Languages Modern foreign language OR ancient language now compulsory in Key Stage 2 Children will be expected to: master basic grammar and accurate punctuation To converse, read and write in the language
11 How is assessment changing?
12 New curriculum = new assessments Current system of Levels now removed and will not be replaced. First new key stage 1 and key stage 2 tests based on the new curriculum will be sat by pupils for the first time in the summer of (Current year 1 and year 5 pupils) Attainment: Reported as a scaled score with 100 being the expected score Progress: Pupil progress in Key Stage 2 will be determined by comparing a pupil s progress from year 2 with similar pupils nationally I.e. A pupil scoring 2b in year 2 would be compared to all other pupils nationally who scored a 2b. Did this pupil achieve a higher or lower scaled score than the average? By removing levels we will allow teachers greater flexibility in the way they plan and assess pupils learning Department for Education, September 2014
13 New assessments = new tests for year 2 (from May 2016) English grammar, punctuation and spelling: 3 papers (15-20 minutes each) English reading test: 2 papers (30 minutes each) Mathematics: Paper 1: arithmetic (15 minutes) Paper 2: Problem solving and reasoning (35 minutes) onal-curriculum-assessments-2016-samplematerials
14 Assessments in year 6 (May 2016) English grammar, punctuation and spelling Paper 1 (Grammar/punctuation) = 45 minutes Paper 2 (Spelling task) = 15 minutes English reading test = 1 hour Mathematics Paper 1: Arithmetic number, calculations and fractions = 30 minutes Paper 2 and Paper 3: Apply mathematics to solve problems = 2 x 40 minutes Mental maths paper has gone!
15 How will we report to parents between tests? It is for schools to determine how best to assess their pupils between statutory end of key stage assessments School must be able to check what pupils have learned and whether they are on track to meet expectations at the end of the key stage Department for Education, September 2014
16 How will we make assessments between tests? Based on the key objectives for the new national curriculum Attainment: Is your child working at the level expected for their year group? Emerging Securing Mastering Exceeding pupils are beginning to demonstrate the knowledge, understanding and skills for this year group or year groups pupils demonstrate the skills, knowledge and understanding for this year group/year groups however this is not yet secure/they are not able to apply their knowledge in a range of contexts pupils demonstrate the skills, knowledge and understanding for their year group/year groups in a range of contexts, including other curriculum areas pupils demonstrate the skills, knowledge and understanding beyond what is expected in their year group/year Progress: Has your child made expected progress this year?
17 More assessment of a different kind Not just about tests! Real assessment is what is happening in every lesson every day across the school - Questioning (and listening to the answers) - Work in books (what does that tell us?) - Feedback/marking This ensures that the teaching and learning is at the right level for each child
