KS Maintained schools New national curriculum 2014 all subjects except English, mathematics and science for years 2 and 6 NC levels still exist for year 2 and 6 Real implications for current year 7 (all subjects) and next few years (particularly English and maths) Ofsted transition and most able Sample questions and sample tests for new KS2 tests in English, mathematics and science available in summer 2015

KS New reception class baseline tests not compulsory but must be used if school wishes to be judged on progress and not just attainment Tests in years 1, 2, 4 and 6 All years now taught the new national curriculum New performance descriptors for use in statutory teacher assessment at the end of KS1 and 2 summer 2016 New end of key stage tests in English and mathematics (and science sample test) with scaled scores no more levels as people didn t understand them - mean approx Schools should aim for 85% of pupils making the expected standard and making sufficient progress in reading, writing and mathematics

Question Level Analyses

KS New KS3 national curriculum in all subjects all years (maintained) No year groups will have had any of the new primary curriculum but will have to follow the new KS3 curriculum Students will enter year 7 with NC KS2 levels Work on your own assessment system (formative and summative) should be under way Ofsted transition and most able Students will enter year 7 with NC KS2 levels Year 7 students will not have covered new KS2 curriculum in English, maths or science Ofsted transition and most able Students will enter year 7 with new ks2 test scores - based on reading, writing and mathematics

KS New NC for all subjects except English, maths and science Old NC science applies until 2016 for year 10, 2017 year 11 Preparations for new GCSEs in English language, English literature and mathematics for first teaching 2015 Choose specification and awarding bodies list of accredited qualifications changes daily and can be found at: CONTENT and assessment

List of which qualifications count in performance tables from 2017 onwards has now been released ( 10 December) and updated (February 2015) and can be found at: Discount codes for qualifications counting for the first time in 2017 are open to a period of review which means someone can get in touch with the department with evidence to suggest the proposed allocated discount code should be amended. This list will then be finalised in late March The list is on RAISEonline at under Further details of the revised performance tables qualifications, discount rules and early entry guidance from Qualifications counting for the first time in 2017 are flagged, and there is information about the review process in the document.

Timetable for other subjects First teaching of new GCSE English language, English literature and mathematics First teaching of most other new GCSEs First teaching of remaining GCSEs (subjects not yet fully decided) Implications re Progress 8 subjects first teaching in 2017 Information regularly updated here:

Reformed GCSEs (grades 9-1) from Sept 15 GCSE English literature Ofqual 2/12/14 Legacy GCSEs (A*-G) no longer available from 2015 GCSE English GCSE English Literature igcse English Literature igcse English GCSE English Language GCSE Maths GCSE English GCSE English Language GCSE Digital communications * igcse English Language igcse English GCSE Maths * Exam boards may continue to make this qualification available to schools and colleges that already offer it for an additional year. That is, to students that will start new two year courses in September Schools and colleges should contact their exam board to find out if they still plan to offer the specific qualifications they want to teach.

igcse and other level 1 / 2 qualifications The current arrangements for recognising other academic qualifications, such as level 1/level 2 certificates (sometimes known as igcses) will end with the introduction of reformed GCSEs : Level 1/level 2 certificates in English and maths will not be included in the 2017 performance tables (due to be published in January 2018) : Level 1/level 2 certificates in subjects being reformed for first teaching from September 2016 (including history, geography, languages and the sciences) will not be included in the 2018 performance tables

Mathematics Only maths qualifications which count as Ebacc maths approved qualifications will count in maths slot and be double counted in P8 This is only the reformed GCSE in maths or AS in maths / further maths for 2017 Linked pair (methods and applications) 2 added together for maths slot counts for the last time in summer 2016 (year 10) If the student has taken more than one maths Ebacc qualification - ONLY the one in the maths slot counts anywhere Approved maths qualifications which are not Ebacc maths qualifications count in open slots eg statistics Level 3 FSMQ will only count in an open slot and will count only if the student does not have their maths slot filled

Difference between boards Content the same Type of question assessment different Ofqual study

English From 2017 only reformed GCSEs in English language or English literature or reformed AS levels in English language, English literature or combined English language and literature will count in P8 Highest grade counts in English slot and is doubled the other grade can count in an open slot Early entry rules will be suspended for English and maths only for one year for 2016/17 results

EBacc Any three EBacc qualifications can count - for example Chemistry, Biology, Physics Biology, Computer Science, French French, Spanish, Welsh

Science In 2016 and 2017 core and additional science can fill one Ebacc slot each so two slots Separate sciences will fill one slot each up to three slots Double science level 2 certificates fill two slots (only if on approved list) Single science fills 1 slot 2017 results (current year 9) BTEC Science will not count at all, anywhere, in PTs New GCSEs first teaching 2016 Combined science (double) and separate sciences no single Practical assessment

Legacy qualifications and resit rules Legacy GCSEs have less P8 points than reformed GCSEs Curriculum planning implications Early entry other than English and maths will count for one transition year Resits Current year 10 will be allowed one November resit GCSE English maths in November 2016 then will have to take reformed GCSEs Consultation but proposed no other resits of legacy qualifications

Vocational qualifications KS4 Only qualifications on the 2017 list, published in December 2014, and revised in 2015, will count in performance tables. This list introduces the term Technical Awards to describe these qualifications. Website, Options booklets etc should use correct terminology

Must haves External assessment: a minimum of 25% of the content externally assessed. New qualifications that will be first reported in 2018 tables will need to have 40%. Synoptic assessment In addition, after 2016 results no vocational qualifications in EBacc subjects will be recognised for performance tables. This chiefly affects vocational science qualifications; vocational ICT qualifications will still be eligible for consideration even if there is some content that is common with Computing.

GCSE grading How were GCSE grade boundaries decided in summer 2014? How will they be decided in summer 2015? After that? Implications?

New grades 9-1 Using comparable outcomes: The bottom of grade 4 will be fixed to the bottom of grade C The bottom of grade 7 will be fixed to the bottom of grade A The bottom of grade 1 will be fixed to the bottom of grade G In addition: Grade 5 will be the top third of grade C and the bottom third of grade B Grade 9 will be the top 20% of those achieving a grade 7 or above

Width of grades P8 works on the basis that.?

What will this mean?

External assessment: a minimum of 25% of the content externally assessed for SVQL2 qualifications, 30% for TL and 40% for AG Synoptic assessment: to help a student develop appreciation of the connections across a subject Employer involvement: For TL and SVQL2 only. Employers must be involved in the delivery and / or assessment of these qualifications.

Level 2 qualifications From September 2015, a new category of post 16 vocational qualification will be introduced: Substantial Vocational Qualifications at level 2 (SVQL2) are for students wishing to specialise in a specific industry, occupation or occupational group. The purpose will be to prepare students either for entry to employment in occupations where employers recognise entry at level 2, or where a level 2 qualification is required before students can progress to a Tech Level.

ASCL Blueprint 2. Curriculum, assessment and qualifications An independent commission including practitioners, parents, governors, employers and politicians reviews the core curriculum every five years, giving the government one opportunity in a Parliament to make changes. The core curriculum framework is only one part of a school s curriculum. Schools build the rest around the core framework to help students develop deep and broad knowledge, and relevant qualities and skills. Vocational qualifications have been reformed so that they are consistently high-quality and are now on a par with academic qualifications.

Six incredibly challenging steps to implementing the reforms 1. Start with your school s vision and stick to it. 2. Review your school s collective understanding of all of the changes 3. Evaluate your school s collective understanding of the pedagogical and curriculum implications 4. Don t forget governors 5. Update your curriculum and staffing plan 6. Review and update your CPD plans 7. Implement a comprehensive communication plan
