The New National Curriculum Assessment Changes 2015

This meeting aims to help parents and carers understand: The changes to the curriculum. The changes to your child s assessment within school. The changes to Primary National Assessments. How you can best support your child to achieve. Remember: at Cowling we are committed to making the primary years not only high achieving but also rich, diverse and full of fun!

Changes to the Curriculum In September 2014 the Government introduced a new National Curriculum and new standards children were expected to reach in each year group. As part of the Government s drive to raise standards in schools across the UK, the curriculum has become more challenging with children expected to reach certain standards earlier. Consequently, the assessment materials used in schools which recorded a child s attainment as a level were believed to be no longer relevant and new assessments were needed for Levels have now been removed.

Changes to Your Child s Assessment Within School Schools across the UK were given the freedom to create their own assessment systems. At Cowling we are using Target Tracker which is a UK wide assessment system used by many schools in the area. In school your child s attainment will no longer be recorded as a level but as a step in their year group expectations, either: Beginning/Beginning+ Working Within/within+ Secure/secure +

Example end of year attainment: Child s Name: A Child Year Group 4 Reading: Y4 Secure Writing: Y4 Secure Maths: Y4 Secure Reading: Y4 Secure Writing: Y4 Working within + Maths: Y4 Beginning When children transfer from levels to the new system it can appear that they are doing less well eg from a Level 2c to Beginning +. This is due to the more challenging nature of the new curriculum which brings new concepts to children earlier.

The expectation is that all children will achieve the secure level at the end of every year. Parents have a vital role to play in supporting their child to reach this standard. Children with SEND may be working at a level below the expectations for their year group. More able children are challenged in the new curriculum to master and apply concepts. At Cowling we are very fortunate to have a very talented team of teachers including Mrs Pease who has been selected as a Maths Mastery Specialist and is working with the Leeds Maths Hub bringing cutting edge ideas and concepts back to Cowling.

Changes to Primary National Assessments Reception Baseline Assessment A new baseline assessment has been introduced from September The assessment, produced by Early Excellence, has been administered by Mrs Antal and is part and parcel of her usual assessments. The Government will use the new assessment as a measure of the progress your child has made through school by the time they leave in Year 6. You can find out more about the test by visitinghttp://earlyexcellence.com/eexba/ This assessment does not use any specific tests and does not disrupt the child s everyday learning which we feel is important when you are taking your first steps in school. The assessment is part of the usual practice of teachers in the Early Years as they build their knowledge of each child through observations, interactions and activities.

Changes to Primary National Assessments Key Stage 1 (Year 1) Children in Year 1 continue to be tested with the Phonics Check which is externally set. This year the check will be administered in the week beginning June 13 th Children are given a range of words some real, some nonsense words and they must use their reading ability to decode each word. In recent years the pass mark for the test has been a score of 32/40 on the Phonics Check. Please help your child by reading with them as much as you can!

Changes to Primary National Assessments Key Stage 1 (Year 2) Children in Year 2 will continue to have externally set SATS tests in reading (2) and maths (2). They will also complete 2 new externally set grammar, spelling and punctuation test this test is externally marked. Writing, Science, Speaking and Listening continue to be marked by teacher assessment. https://www.gov.uk/government/collections/national-curriculumassessments-2016-sample-materials#scaled-scores Your child s national test results will be given as a scaled score with 100 representing the expected standard. A scaled score is a conversion from the pupil s actual raw marks. It is expected that each school should have at least 85% of its pupils achieving the National Standard.

Changes to Primary National Assessments Key Stage 2 (Year 6) Children in Year 6 will continue to have SATS tests. In the week beginning May our Year 6 pupils will be the first to sit new SATS papers reflecting the new National Curriculum. These tests are both set and marked externally. It is very important children are in school during SATS week. Reading (1 hour including reading time) consisting of a selection of fiction, non-fiction and poetry tests. (800 words, 300 words, 300 words). Maths: there are three tests, arithmetic (30 minutes) and two reasoning papers (40 minutes each). There is no longer a calculator paper. Grammar, spelling and punctuation test (45 minutes plus an aural spelling test). Writing and science are marked by teacher assessment. A sample of pupils at schools chosen randomly across the UK will sit a national science test (Biology, Chemistry and Physics). Your child s national test results will be given as a scaled score with 100 the expected standard.

Changes to Primary National Assessments Progress Measures A child s progress will be measured from their Reception baseline test to their scores in end of KS2 tests in Year 6. The first children to go through this new assessment system will take their KS2 tests in Prior to 2022, the Dfe will set progress targets once the new tests have been sat in 2016 for the first time. In 2020 and 2021 progress will be measured between the new KS1 and new KS2 test. Within school a child s typical progress will be measured in their progression through the steps from beginning to secure. More able pupils will show progression through their ability to use and apply concepts in a range of contexts and respond to additional challenge.

How Parents and Carers Can Help: Ensure your child reads at least X3 each week. Ensure your child completes all homework. Work on times tables with your child and ask them division facts eg What is 20 chocolate bars shared between 4 children? Talk to them about correct grammar and use grammar terms when supporting homework.
