3 Grasshopper Legs Q: I wonder if grasshoppers from different places have different length legs? H: Grasshoppers living in MV have longer legs than those living in Georgia. Q: I wonder if grasshoppers with longer legs can jump higher? H: Grasshoppers with longer legs jump higher (For this, you would actually have to measure how high they jumped as well as the length of their legs.)

6 Symbiosis Living Together

7 Three Types of Symbiosis Mutualism both species benefit Commensalism one species benefits, the other is unaffected Parasi7sm one species benefits, the other is harmed

8 Mutualism Both organisms benefit from the rela7onship Oaers and Kelp The o;ers help the kelp by ea7ng the sea urchins which endanger it. The kelp provides and anchor for the o;ers while they sleep.

9 Lichen Lichen is really two organisms: algae and fungus. The fungus needs food but cannot make it. The algae makes food but needs some way to keep moist. The fungus forms a crust around the algae which holds in moisture. Both organisms benefit.

10 The Chital and the Tree- pie The tree-pies help the chital by stripping the dead velvet from the antlers. This provides them with nourishment. Therefore both species are benefiting from this symbiotic behavior.

11 Cleaner Fish and the Moray Eel The cleaner fish eats parasites and food bits out of the inside of this moray eel. It gets a meal and is protected from predators by the fierce eel.

12 Yucca Plants and Yucca Moths Each type of Yucca plant can only be pollinated by a specific kind of Yucca moth. That moth can only live on that kind of Yucca.

13 Swollen Thorn Acacia Tree and Ants The tree provides a nursery for the ants in the thorns and makes special food for the ant babies. In return the ants seng and aaack any other plants or insects that try to invade the tree.

14 Commensalism One species benefits while the other is uneffected The ca;le egret and cows The ca;le help the egret who look for grasshoppers and beetles that are raised by the cows. Now and then they sit on the back of a cow, looking for 7cks and flies. This does not effect the ca;le in any way.

15 Barnacles and Whales Barnacles need a place to anchor. They must wait for food to come their way. Some barnacles hitch a ride on unsuspec7ng whales who deliver them to a food source. This does not effect the whale in any way.

16 Oak Gall Wasps and Oak Trees The oak gall wasp sengs the oak tree. the tree then grows a GALL which is a nest for the wasp s babies. When the larva hatch, they eat their way out of the gall. Does not help or hurt the oak tree

17 Parasi7sm One species benefits while the other is harmed Mistletoe is an aerial parasite that has no roots of its own and lives off the tree to which it attaches itself. Without that tree it would die. It slowly chokes out the life of the host tree.

18 Bedbugs are small, nocturnal parasites that come out of hiding at night to feed on unsuspec7ng humans. They feed exclusively on blood! Their bites onen result in an allergic reac7on. Bedbugs

19 Tapeworms The definieve host of the cucumber tapeworm is a dog or a cat (occasionally a human). Fleas and lice are the intermediate host. the dog or cat becomes contaminated when the eggs are passed in the feces, and the flea or louse ingests the eggs. The dog or cat (or human) is infected when they ingest a flea or louse. Hence the importance of controlling fleas on your pet!

22 What is a HOST? What is a PARASITE?

23 Final Answer (Should go something like this) A HOST is any organism that allows another organism or bacteria to live in it or on it. The PARASITE is the organism living off of the HOST. *Lets think about and discuss some examples of a parasite/host relationship

24 A More Formal Definition for Parasites: Parasite: Live on or in the body of another species and exploit that species for sustenance (food). This means the parasite benefits at the expense of the host. The host-parasite relationship is typically species specific.

25 Some Examples: Fleas on a dog or cat why is this a parasite host relationship? Intestinal worms in horses or cows why is this a parasite/host relationship?

26 What a parasite MUST HAVE to survive: Nutrition food! The host provides nourishment for the parasite. Protection from the environment The host provides shelter, warm and snug! Ability to Reproduce make more! The parasite can not survive without its host!

27 Parasite Life Cycle: The life cycle is a never-ending chain of events that lead to the parasite constantly reproducing and re-infesting another animal. YUCK!!! Let s take a look at one example of a parasite life cycle.next slide

29 Common Types of Parasites: Roundworms Tapeworms Hook worms Heart worms Amoeba Flies, Fleas, Lice, Mites,Ticks, and Spiders. Each causes different symptoms and different infections. As host is treated for parasite, both can build up immunities. The host to the parasite and the parasite to the treatment. That is why new methods of treatment must constantly be created!!
