1 3 rd Grade Coral Reef Symbiosis Standards S3Ll. Students will investigate the habitats of different organisms and the dependence of organisms on their habitat. S3CSl. Students will be aware of the importance of curiosity, honesty, openness, and skepticism in science and will exhibit these traits in their own efforts to understand how the world works. S3CS3. Students will use tools and instruments for observing, measuring, and manipulating objects in scientific activities utilizing safe laboratory procedures. 53C54. Students will use ideas of system, model, change, and scale in exploring scientific and technological matters. Learning Goal Understand the Symbiosis of organisms in a Coral Tank. This lesson is intended for a classroom that has, or has access to, a saltwater aquarium with corals, sea anemones, and other saltwater organisms. Opening/Hook Show Symbiosis clip Mini-Lesson Point out the symbols used to identify each category. Have students provide other examples of symbiosis between organisms. Show the Symbiosis School Rap Chart on the ActivBoard. Discuss the different parts and the symbols that are used to identify each relationship. (Mutualism: + + Commensalism: + - Parasitism: +-) Guided & Materials: microscope, glass slide, Sea Anemone, razor or scissors. ndependent Explain to the student an example of symbiosis is algae living in a Sea Practice Anemone's tentacles. Students will determine the type of relationship based on observations through a microscope. *Teacher cuts a small portion of the tentacle off with a razor blade. Students place the tentacle on a microscope slide, then press down another slide on top. Place the slide on the microscope. Students should record their observations in their Science Journals. *Students complete the Symbiosis Sort. Using a llx14 piece of construction paper, students make three columns. Cut out the titles Mutualism, Commensalism, and Parasitism and paste one in each column. Under the titles, cut out and paste the definition of each relationship. Next, cut out and paste the examples in the correct column. Differentiation Support - Students work with a partner to complete Symbiosis Sort. Extend - Students research other symbiotic relationships in nature. DOK3 Level Why do organisms have symbiotic relationships? 3 Symbiosis Sort A symbiotic relationship that benefits both organisms involved. A symbiotic relationship that benefits one organism and the other is not helped or harmed. A symbiotic relationship that benefits one organism and the other is harmed. Barnacles create home sites by attaching themselves to whales. The whales are not harmed. Remoras attach themselves scraps from the shark's meals. to a shark's body. They then travel with the shark and feed on the leftover The scale worm lives in or near the sea star's mouth. As the sea star eats, the scale worm gets leftover pieces of food. Conversely, if a predator tries to attack a sea star, the scale worm uses its sharp pincerlike jaws to bite the predator. The pearl fish is a type of mesoparasite. t detects chemicals given off by the sea cucumber and enters the sea cucumber when it participates in gas exchange and breaths in water. The sea cucumber attempts to eject the pearl fish by expelling most of their digestive tract out through their anus. This can be kill the sea cucumber. Algae that grows inside the tentacles of a Sea Anemone and Sea Anemone provides a place for the algae to live.

4 Symbiosis Sort A crab fights off its enemies by hiding among the stinging tentacles of the anemone. n return,:- anemone eats food left behind by the crab. ~ A trematode is a parasitic worm that can be found in almost every fish, bird and turtle near the Great Barrier Reef. When a trematode hosts on a snail, it affects the snail's reproduction for life. The snail looks and behaves normally but instead of reproducing snails, it reproduces parasites instead! The Fish Doctor, a type of isopod crustacean, then sucks the blood of the host fish until it dies. will attach itself under the fins, scales, or gills of a fish. t Hermit crabs live in shells made and then abandoned by snails.
