Advanced Cloud Security The Future of Cloud Hosting for Small Business How advanced technology creates affordable, custom Hosting environments A White Paper from Trapp Online by Kent Sorensen, May, 2013 Audience Small to Medium Business Owner/CEO

Trapp Online Advanced Hosting Features: The Trapp Online approach results in a more secure, high performance environment where costs to the customer are less, eliminating the trade-off between cost, and the extra security and performance of a dedicated environment. Dedicated Servers Advanced Cloud Data Security Proprietary Network Architecture A Higher Level of Customer Service Executive Summary Benefits of Cloud Computing Small to medium businesses (SMBs) gain significant economic, operational and security advantages by hosting applicattions and IT infrastructure on the Cloud. Industry Trends In 2013, SMBs will continue to deploy cloud initiatives, mobile strategies, and unified systems. Industry-specific Application Hosting and All-in-one Solutions are growing in popularity. Growth of the Cloud 39% of organizations are using or implementing a cloud solution. Percentage of budget spent on cloud computing and cloud savings forecasts are up. Best Practices Overall industry best practices focus on meeting customer requirements. Security best practices demand implementation of a variety of measures. Custom Hosting Higher levels of service are possible with custom hosting. Customers prefer a single point of contact. Setup and integration work better with dedicated servers. Dedicated Environments Dedicated hosting is more flexible than shared hosting and offers significant benefits. Dedicated environments may cost more but have the potential to offer a larger return on investment. The Future of the Cloud Trapp Online has built an advanced hosting solution that is years ahead of the industry. Heavy up-front investments in technology allow them to create stable custom hosting environments for specific market segments at an affordable price

Benefits of the Trapp Online Approach to Hosting 1. Pain-free Custom Hosting 2. Enterprise-class security at an affordable price 3. Faster setup 4. Better integration 5. Improved performance 6. Fewer problems Often called a disruptive technology Cloud computing is forever changing the way software is delivered and used. Access to better software, more computing power and lower costs mean the Cloud is the preferred application platform for small business. 7. Less downtime 8. More time to grow the business Business Benefits of Cloud Computing The adoption of cloud computing solutions, including hosting, in small business is growing rapidly1 due to its significant operational advantages, including these wellestablished and measurable benefits: Lower overall cost Due to economies of scale and pay-as-you-go Increased productivity From improved response times and expanded access Less IT maintenance Due to centralized infrastructure managed by IT experts Enhanced collaboration Simultaneous access from anywhere connects people and data Enhanced security Small business gets enterprise class data security - 3 -

History of the Cloud In the 1990s, telecommunications companies began offering virtual private network (VPN) services with quality comparable to dedicated point-to-point data circuits at a lower cost. They began to use the cloud symbol to indicate what the provider was responsible for. Cloud computing now includes servers as well as the network infrastructure. The underlying concept of cloud computing dates back to the 1950s, when dumb terminals, were used to access mainframe computers. As computers became more prevalent, time sharing made large-scale computing power available to more users. In the 1960s, John McCarthy stated computation may someday be organized as a public utility. The development of more and more Internet services set the stage for world-wide access to computing resources. High-bandwidth networks, powerful computers and lowcost data storage as well as server virtualization and utility service pricing have led to exponential growth in cloud computing. Amazon played an important role by offering cloud computing as Amazon Web Service (AWS) with utility pricing in By mid-2008 organizations were switching from company-owned hardware and software assets to service-based models

Definitions Cloud Computing Accessing computing resources (data, software and computation) over the Internet. For example, . The name comes from a cloud-shaped symbol used to represent complex server, network and Internet infrastructure in system diagrams. Hosting Your business software and data are physically located in an off-premise data center. Hardware and infrastructure may be owned by a third party hosting provider. Cloud Hosting and Application Hosting The industry-specific software and data you use to manage your business (Examples: QuickBooks, Sage CRE, Maxwell, TOPS), is accessed over the Internet and resides in a third-party data center such as Trapp Online Shared Hosting Multiple customers data and software are installed on a single physical or virtual server; negatively impacts data security and flexibility. Dedicated Hosting Each customer s software and data is installed on a dedicated physical or virtual server at the data center; provides increased performance, reliability, security and data isolation; typically costs more than shared hosting; Trapp Online s standard service model Custom Hosting The hosting data center provides additional services to facilitate an environment adapted to the customer s specific needs such as application integration and multi-cloud access; Trapp Online s standard service model SaaS (Software as a Service) Access to software, computation and data storage are provided for a recurring fee with no capital investment. Application Service Provider (ASP) A software application company that provides a cloud or hosted version of their software for a recurring fee (see SaaS). A vertical market ASP delivers a solution package for a specific customer type, such as a dental practice. Examples: TOPS, Vacation RentPro and Lacerte Data Center The building where the computer hardware and IT infrastructure are housed; May contain equipment servicing multiple clouds and application service providers and their many customers; Trapp Online is located in a large data center in Phoenix, Arizona Virtual or Virtualization The practice of sharing computer resources, including operating system, software and data, while maintaining separate and distinct operating environments - 5 -

Industry Trends Hosting Expands As cloud technologies proliferate, new hosting services are emerging including multi-cloud hosting and hosted phone systems. Mobile Transformation The growth of the cloud is driving the use of mobile devices in the workplace. j2 Global predicts SMBs will continue to employ smartphones and tablets for workplace applications beyond communications. As a result, the remote worker will become more common. Unified Systems In 2013, small to medium businesses (SMBs) will continue to deploy cloud initiatives, mobile strategies, and unified systems. SMB decision-makers will increasingly integrate multiple systems to enhance connections and collaboration in the office. Organizations will increase profits by delivering better service and by reducing the costs associated with managing separate applications. Industry-specific Application Hosting The increasing cost of industry-specific software has exceeded the price range of SMBs. Application Service Providers (ASPs) are filling the gap with reduced complexities and cost. All-in-one Solutions In addition to affordable software options, SMB customers are looking for a one-stop source for all of their IT needs. ASPs can provide a combination of application hosting, support services, SaaS integration, single-signon mechanisms and the convenience of a single point of contact

Growth of Hosting and the Cloud Cloud Adoption is Increasing In 2013, 39% of organizations are implementing or maintaining a cloud or hosting solution, up from 28% in Cloud Spending as a Percentage of Budget is Up According to CDW, the average percentage of budget small business IT managers expect to spend on cloud computing in: One Year 21% Four Years 38% Cloud Savings Forecast is Up Best Practices Hosting and ASP The development of best practices in the Hosting and ASP industry focuses on meeting customer requirements. Microsoft s Best-Practices for ASPs states: The success of an ASP depends on thoroughly satisfying customers by delivering solutions that perform per agreement in terms of: Quality delivery to the customer of the agreed quality as identified in the SLA Speed timely management of resources to meet solution requirements per the SLA Value optimized and predictable cost Proactive management of capacity, contingencies, and security ensures a balance between the customer expectations of quality, speed and value. Security Best Practices Data security on the cloud is a prime concern of SMBs. Best practices demand implementation of the following: The average percentage of budget IT managers say they expect to save on cloud computing in: One Year 21% Four Years 30% Network Protection Incident Response Host Hardening Security Policies and Plans Security Patching Encryption Requirements Passwords Policies and Procedures Privacy Personnel Training Disaster Recovery Physical Security Cage Environment Isloated network Liability Insurance - 7 -

Dedicated Environments Dedicated hosting with dedicated servers is more flexible than shared hosting. Organizations have greater control over the server(s) and experience less interference from other users. The server hardware is owned by the provider and in some cases, as with Custom Hosting they will provide support for the operating system or applications. Using a dedicated hosting service offers the benefits of high Custom hosting, particularly setup and integration, works better with dedicated servers which provide more stable environments, greater flexibility and increased security. performance, security, application stability, and control. Due to the relatively high price of dedicated hosting, it is mostly used by customers with larger transaction and user counts. Dedicated servers have the potential to offer less overhead and a larger return on investment. Custom Hosting Increasing numbers of data centers offer varying degrees of service and specialization. Some limit their customers to specific vertical markets or software to facilitate specialization, making higher levels of service, including setup, integration and upgrades, possible. Data centers provide custom hosting with these additional services to attract customers seeking comprehensive solutions and a single point of contact. Support teams are more likely to be familiar with the customer s application and needs with this service model

The Trapp Online Approach to Hosting The Future of the Cloud Trapp Online has built an advanced hosting solution that is years ahead of the industry. Their forward-looking approach includes these superior hosting features as standard for all customers: Dedicated servers Advanced Cloud Data Security Proprietary Network Architecture The stable environments created by heavy upfront investments in technology require less maintenance. Overall operating costs are less making it possible for Trapp Online to offer the best hosting at an affordable price. A High Level of Customer Service Trapp Online has invested heavily in a proprietary network/ security architecture and hosting infrastructure which allows them to create very stable custom hosting environments for market segments with specific needs such as: Accounting Software QuickBooks, AccountEdge Sage Accounting, MAS 90 Drake, Quicken, Ultratax Industry-Specific Software Sage Construction and Real Estate Maxwell Systems TOPS Software Vacation RentPro Software Integrators Interweave Savage and Associates Remotelink - 9 -

Security Features Trapp Online employs a unique combination of advanced security features not found at other commercial data centers. The comprehensive, proprietary design is unfamiliar to outside companies and hackers and provides an extraordinary level of protection. Dedicated Virtual Servers - Provide an extra layer of protection, like a safe deposit box within a bank vault. Isolated servers Customers servers are logically isolated. Other servers can t be accessed or even seen. Cisco Flexpod - A level of security achieved by less than one percent of U.S. data centers11. Adaptive security appliance A Cisco Adaptive Security Appliance is continuously monitoring worldwide security threats and upgrading protective software in real time. Custom firewall settings Customers can customize their own firewall settings to adapt to unique requirements. Additional Physical Security - Trapp Online s cloud infrastructure and servers are located in a locked, partitioned area within the larger data center, providing an additional layer of operational security. Trapp Online Superior Hosting Features Dedicated Servers Trapp Online provides a dedicated server for each hosting customer at a price comparable to shared hosting from other providers. Trapp Online clients avoid the problems of shared hosting while gaining numerous operational benefits and increased data security. Dedicated servers provide an extra layer of protection, like a safe deposit box within a bank vault. Advanced Cloud Data Security The security measures developed by Trapp Online exist mostly in theory for other cloud providers. This dramatic lead in security comes from two directions: 1. Philosophy Company founder, David Trapp, built and managed an accounting firm for 20 years. There s a security mind-set I developed from years of experience, a dedication to privacy and a commitment to reliability. This attitude has driven Trapp Online to build the most resilient and secure cloud environment possible, he explains. 2. Partners and consultants Trapp Online acquired the services of the most qualified technical experts in cloud security, the best minds in their areas of specialization, both vendors and consultants. The result of their combined input is a solution that is years ahead of the industry

Benefits of the Trapp Online Approach to Hosting Pain-free Custom Hosting Customers options Proprietary Network Architecture Isolated Network - Network traffic for each customer is completely segregated from other data center users. Redundant Internet - Trapp Online built an Internet mesh, or mix of four carriers for Internet reliability, including a failsafe wireless carrier accessed with a rooftop antenna. A Higher Level of Customer Service The Trapp Online approach focuses on specific industries and application service providers. Support teams are specialized and assigned to specific customer applications enabling them to be more familiar with the application environments. Application setups are faster in dedicated environments and Techs knowledge and experience with the applications means faster problem resolution. When technical issues do arise, customers spend less time getting them resolved. Problems are more likely to be resolved correctly the first time. for unified systems (multiple integrated applications) are expanded as more technically advanced solutions are possible in a custom environment. Application Service Providers can offer reliable industry-specific or integrated solutions in a more stable environment. Enterprise-class hosting at an affordable price Trapp Online s Advanced Cloud Data Security and unique data center architecture require less IT support than less secure environments. The resulting operational efficiencies from this exceptionally stable environment enable Trapp Online to offer dedicated servers at a shared server price affordable for small business. Faster setup Dedicated servers remove the variables and interference from other customers applications that must be managed in a shared environment. With no application vetting process, setup can be accomplished in minutes instead of days or weeks

The Future of the Cloud at and Affordable Price Traditional cloud pricing requires you to pay more for dedicated servers, creating an uncomfortable trade-off between cost and the extra security and performance of a dedicated environment. The Trapp Online approach eliminates the trade-off by providing a more secure, high performance environment where costs to the customer are less. That means the future of the cloud is available today at Trapp Online. For additional information on this or other topics visit: community.trapponline.com Benefits of the Trapp Online Approach to Hosting Better integration Dedicated environments allow greater flexibility making application integration easier to accomplish and maintain. Integrations run more reliably in a stable environment. Improved performance Less competition for resources means faster and more consistent response times. Fewer problems Because each customer s environment is more stable, less IT maintenance is required. Less downtime Each customer s stable, dedicated server environment does not change as other customers are added to or removed from the cloud. There s less handling and less to go wrong, which results in less downtime. More time to focus on growth Faster setup, improved performance, fewer problems and less downtime are good for business. Owners spend less time on the phone dealing with IT issues and more time focused on growing the enterprise
