1 CHAPTER 8 Downloading to the Computer (linking with Photo2GPS) 1) Downloading the Digital images a) Turn the computer on. b) Connect one end of the USB cable to the computer and then connect the other, smaller USB connector, to the camera. The camera will turn on and the green lamp lights. Remember that the camera battery will continue to discharge while the camera is connected to the computer. It may be advisable to use the 120 volt adapter to externally power the camera if you plan to leave the camera connected to the computer for some time. Use caution because images may be lost if the camera batteries die during the downloading process. c) On the camera monitor select PC and press OK. d) Now move to the computer. A dialogue box should appear when the computer recognizes the external device (the camera). Select "OPEN FOLDER TO VIEW FILES USING WINDOWS EXPLORER" and click OK. e) First we must find and open the digital camera storage file where your digital photos are located. Open the MY COMPUTER icon on the desktop. f) Open the REMOVABLE DISK (the camera) icon and then open the DCIM folder. g) Open the 100 OLYMP folder. This is where your digital photos are stored. h) Next we will open the file where we want to store the digital photos. Open the My Computer icon on the desktop. Open LOCAL DISK C:, then the folder GSPCAMERA, then the folder IMAGES. This is where we will store the photos. i) Drag and drop the digital camera jpgs from the 100OLYMP folder to the IMAGES folder. We have now copied the digital images from the camera to the computer. The images are still stored on the camera. j) To disconnect the camera, click on the "SAFELY REMOVE HARDWARE" icon on the task bar. Click on the Mass storage device. A message should appear saying that it is safe to remove the mass storage device. Unplug the camera from the computer and shut it off. UNH Cooperative Extension 31

2 Downloading to the Computer (linking with Photo2GPS) 2) Configuring GPS for Download a) Connect GPS to computer : Hook GPS unit up to computer using serial port connector cable. b) Turn GPS unit: Hold down POWER BUTTON. c) Make sure the GPS is in SIMULATION MODE: With the GPS on the ACQUIRING SATELLITES PAGE, press MENU, and selected START SIMULATOR. d) Launch DNR Garmin program: i) Double-click icon on the desktop or ii) iii) iv) Click on the START BUTTON, Go to PROGRAMS, then DNR GARMIN, Click on DNR GARMIN. e) If DNR Garmin is able to connect to your GPS unit, you will see the following: 32 UNH Cooperative Extension

3 NOTE: You should see "Connected" on the lower left-hand side of the program. Your projection may not be the same as shown here, but you will soon change the projection yourself, so don't be concerned. f) If DNR Garmin is not able to connect to your GPS unit, you will see the following dialogue box: TIP: To attempt to address the problems, go through the following steps: Check to make sure your GPS is turned on and connected to the computer through the serial port. Make sure your port number is set correctly. To do so, go to the GPS MENU, go to SET PORT, and select "Port 1" (the port used on your computer may vary depending on your setup). Go to the GPS MENU and select OPEN PORT. UNH Cooperative Extension 33

Once the GPS is connected to the computer, you will have to set the projection to match the GIS data you will be using to make your map. In NH, the GRANIT system distributes data in the following coordinate system:north American Datum 1983 (NAD 83), New Hampshire State Plan Coordinate System inus feet a) To set this projection, go to the FILE MENU and select SET PROJECTION b) In the section for POSC Codes, click on the radio button for ESRI c) In the section for DATUMS/ PROJECTIONS, select the following: NAD_1983_StatePlane_New_Hampshire_FIPS_2800_Feet d) Click on OK button on lower left. NOTE: The POSC Code at the top of the page should read "102710" when you have chosen the correct Datum/Projection. To skip the step of scrolling down the list, click on the box under POSC Codes, type , then push the Enter yet on your keyboard. e) Set the units to feet: Go to the GPS MENU, select UNITS, then click on the option FEET. 34 UNH Cooperative Extension

5 4) Download GPS track data. a) From the TRACK MENU, select DOWNLOAD b) When the download is complete, you will see a box confirming the number of track points which you have successfully downloaded. c) Click on the OK BUTTON. d) You will have a list of the track points you have downloaded, including a unique number for each point, latitude and longitude, x- and y-coordinates for the chosen projection, a comment field in which you will find the date and time the point was collected, as well as other information. NOTE: If you do not see a list of track points, click on the DATA TABLE BUTTON to show the list points in your active log. UNH Cooperative Extension 35

6 Downloading to the Computer (linking with Photo2GPS) 5) Save GPS track data as a text file a) Click on the File menu and choose Save To, then File... b) In the save dialog box, navigate to the following folder: c:\gpscamera\gpsdata\ c) Change the Save as type to Text File (Comma delimited) (*.txt) d) Name the file yourname_pictures.txt. Please do not use strange characters (even - in your file name) e) Click on the Save button to save your track as a text file. f) Click on the OK in the dialog box that appears on the screen. g) Minimize DNR Garmin to the task bar on the bottom of your screen. 36 UNH Cooperative Extension
