7 Worksheet 4: The Engagement Cycle Worksheet To help identify and engage participants in your collective impact effort, it is useful to think of a cycle of ongoing activities. Consider the following key questions and write down your responses. Activity Key Questions Notes Identification Who are potential participants? Inform What is their motivation to engage? Engagement What types of activities would interest them or provide value? Barriers Stewardship What are potential barriers to engagement? How will we keep them engaged? Other activities? 7
8 Worksheet 5: Backbone Roles and Planning for Your Backbone Support There are several core roles and responsibilities of backbone organizations in Collective Impact initiatives. See the listing below for a better understanding of what this critical backbone work entails, and then fill out the planning tool on the other side to determine where you need to focus your efforts. 1. Guide Vision and Strategy Build a common understanding of the problem Provide strategic guidance to develop a common agenda 2. Support Aligned Activities Ensure mutually reinforcing activities take place: o Coordinate and facilitate communication and collaboration o Convene partners and key external stakeholders o Catalyze or incubate new initiatives or collaborations o Provide technical assistance o Create paths for, and recruit, new partners o Seek opportunities for alignment with other efforts 3. Establish Shared Measurement Practices Collect, analyze, interpret, and report data Catalyze or develop shared measurement systems Provide technical assistance for building partners data capacity 4. Build Public Will Build public will, consensus and commitment: o Create a sense of urgency and articulate a call to action o Support community member engagement activities o Produce and manage external communications 5. Advance Policy Advocate for an aligned policy agenda 6. Mobilize Funding Mobilize and align public and private funding to support goals 8
