We are the primary custodian of Queensland s documentary heritage and a significant partner with local government to provide library services for more than 340 public libraries and Indigenous Knowledge Centres throughout Queensland. We are committed to fostering creative thinking and sharing knowledge to generate an empowered and progressive society. To achieve our vision, enriching the lives of Queenslanders, we focus on four strategic objectives: Improve access to library services Co-create Queensland s memory Extend learning and creative experiences Develop our people and capability As we shift to a digital world with a culture of open information and user created content, our role has expanded. While SLQ still documents the story of Queensland and provides access to reference material, the focus has shifted towards engaging the community with these collections through a dynamic and vibrant program which pushes the boundaries of its role in the community. Alongside this, SLQ run innovative projects such as our growing network of Indigenous Knowledge Centres that are helping to preserve Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander knowledge and culture. We are also promoting creativity and collaboration through The Edge,
2 the Asia-Pacific Design Library and A State of Writing in collaboration with organisations across Queensland. The program Content Development is responsible for leading the large scale changes associated with the development and implementation of the State Library s Digital Library strategy and the core activities of Queensland Memory (including the management of the John Oxley Library), Discovery (including Preservation, Description and Collection Access units), Information and Communication Technology Services (ICTS), the Government Information and Research Library Service. The program is responsible for the digitisation, preservation and access to legacy collections of published and original materials, the selection, capture and preservation for future access of born digital content and the reinvention of systems for the delivery of library services both onsite at the State Library's South Bank site and online to our growing virtual client base. One of the challenges of the program is to reshaping our core services for the digital era, including the implementation of standards for industrial scale systems for digital content. The State Library s Content Strategy is focused on the collecting, preserving and promotion of Queensland s unique documentary heritage. Our collection strengths include the: John Oxley Library, known for its wide range of content both contemporary and retrospective is collected chronicling events, people, places and ideas that continue to shape Queensland Asia Pacific Design Library Australian Library of Art. The branch Discovery is responsible for the strategic management and preservation of State Library s physical and digital collections. As the content of our collection changes, so too does the way we need to treat, manage, preserve and enable access to this content. Library collections are no longer limited to published resources and original content that is catalogued and placed on shelves. Born digital, turned digital, unpublished, licensed and community created content all present new challenges in regard to how we manage and deliver our collection. Discovery has the challenging task of increasing the State Library of Queensland s capability to respond to these changes and the online environment. Providing the discovery, description and delivery of all State Library resources (physical, digital and online) is no small task, especially in an environment where there is constant change. Our role is to stay abreast of and understand the information seeking needs of our clients and develop new approaches for access, discovery and delivery of our collection as it continues the transition from print to digital.
