4 Level applications Level measurement is critical not just for the safety and monitoring of cargo tanks but also for the ship s water storage and engine operations. Accuracy, reliability, eases of installation and maintenance and the ability to withstand corrosive environments are all paramount considerations for ship designers, fitters and operators. On-board storage tanks Overfilling or product discharge on deck or into the sea could have devastating consequences for human life and the environment. The levels of storage tanks must be continuously monitored and controlled. Continuous level measurement and redundant monitoring of conveyor pumps by means of level switches are essential parts of the safety system. To prevent damage to the storage tanks caused by low pressure or by external temperature fluctuations, the internal pressure and temperature of the tanks is monitored continuously during charge and discharge procedures. Continuous level measurement, SITRANS LR Radar Changing products, fluctuating temperature and different densities are a special challenge for the level measurement in product tanks. The SITRANS LR radar sensors are unaffected by temperature, pressure or gas stratification ensuring reliable measurement data right from the start. Radar technology measures time of flight and thus the empty space in the tank. As result density fluctuations of the products will not affect the high quality measurement performance. Fresh water and waste water Fresh water is an essential commodity on a ship. It is stored in separate dedicated tanks. Depending on the type and size of the ship, different amounts of fresh water are required for drinking, for personal hygiene as well as for cleaning. Waste water, so-called grey/black water, on large ships is either treated in on-board treatment plants or stored in special grey/black water tanks for eventual final disposal. Grey water measurement with SITRANS LU probe Due to the large concentration of solids and the changing density of the tank contents, non-contact measurement with ultrasonic technology suits this application well. The compact SITRANS LU probe is resistant against the corrosive gases in the tank and requires a minimal threaded mounting boss as a process connection. SITRANS P in fresh water SITRANS P product family offers virtually any configuration for each and every application. Materials approved for drinking water and flanged directly onto the tank with a front-flush diaphragm provide the basis of flawlessly hygienic measurement. The rugged diaphragm withstands chemical as well as mechanical cleaning. Detecting water ingress in bulk carriers International standards, introduced in 2002 to improve shipping safety, require water ingress detection and alarm systems in the cargo holds of all new single-skin bulk carriers (Regulation 12 of SOLAS Chap XII, IACS UR S24 and IMO standards). Ingress detection meeting SOLAS regulation with SITRANS LC 300 In a typical application, a SITRANS LC 300 sensor probe is attached to a cable in a metal stilling pipe located in the cargo hold. In most cases, a 2.0 m (6.6 ft) probe made of PFA-coated stainless steel is suspended on a 20 m (65 ft) cable, but probes and cables are available in customized lengths for specific applications. Typical settings are for detection at 0.5 m (1.6 ft) and 2.0 m (6.6 ft). Service and settling tank On many ships, to ensure fuel feed to the main engine, separated heavy fuel oil (HFO) is first pumped into a buffer tank. The connected day tank is filled via continuous overflow from the buffer tank and is connected directly with the main engine. Heating coils in both tanks ensure a temperature between +75 and +90 C (+167 and +194 F) which keeps the oil viscous and transportable via pumps. SITRANS ultrasonic sensors in combination with the MultiRanger controller The heavy fuel oil stored in the day and buffer tank has a high storage temperature and contains a number of different chemical compounds. Sticky oil vapours make the level measurement very difficult. The SITRANS ultrasonic sensors have a demonstrated reputation to resolve this problem and MultiRanger ultrasonic systems as unmatched alternative

5 Level switches and leakage detection Pressure monitoring and control Different products, vibration, hazardous areas, sticky and highly viscous materials. All pose challenges for level switches in the marine industry. Reliable and precise switch operation is vital for the continuity on board of ships. The POINTEK CLS family of capacitance level switches The POINTEK family using inverse frequency technology is ideally suited for all kind of different applications since it has no moving parts and can cope with product build-up. Its test key makes fast and reliable on-site checking possible. For example: 95 % and 98 % alarm thresholds The 95 % high alarm point prevents overfilling of the cargo tanks. Due to safety regulations an extra high-high alarm point is set on 98 %. POINTEK level switches provide a cost effective and reliable technology for this critical function. Level detection in ballast tanks Similarly, to prevent overfilling of the ballast tanks, the pumps or blowers have to be switched off quickly. Again the POINTEK CLS inverse frequency level switch delivers this function. It is a wear- and maintenance-free sensor and is the ideal solution for adjustment-free level detection in the ballast tanks. Monitoring the bilge A water/oil mixture collects at the lowest point of the ship. The mixture is separated into water and oil by an on-board skimmer and demulsifying unit. After passing through various cleaning processes, the water can be pumped out. The bilge de-oiling equipment can be controlled by POINTEK level switches. Engine oil and fuel leakage detection Due to safety and environmental considerations, the oil and fuel lines of the main engine and ancillary units need to be continuously monitored. The level in the oil drip pan or collecting vessel is also monitored in order to detect possible leaks. POINTEK CLS 100 The POINTEK CLS 100 level switch is mainly characterised by its small and compact low cost design. The small dimensions allow mounting in practically any place or position. Foam, bubble formation and viscosity do not affect the switching accuracy. The POINTEK CLS 100 is thus an ideal solution. Protection of on-board and dock equipment During charging and discharging processes, it is imperative to safeguard on-board and dock equipment. Monitoring the pipeline pressures at the manifold provides the data to ensure safety and provides the basis for pump control. If pump output gets too high or if valves remain closed, gauge or low pressure in the product pipelines can result in damage to the manifold or the storage tanks. On-site pressure indication provides additional security for processes in volving the manifold. Pressure monitoring during charging and discharging procedure Hydraulic submersible pumps convey different products from the storage tanks with pressures up to 1600 kpa (232 psi). SITRANS P DS III is suitable for monitoring the pressure in the product pipeline. The transmitter is equipped not only with onboard display, but provides continuous access through local push buttons, even in hazardous areas or alternately through remote access software (PDM). Control pressure for submersible pumps Hydraulic submersible pumps are operated with an onboard pressure between to kpa (2320 psi 3625 psi). SITRANS P DS III is used to regulate the output of these hydraulic pumps. The unmatched construction of the measuring cell in the sensor prevents damage in case of over-pressure and can withstand the highest pressure loads with overload pressure of kpa (8700 psi). Many arduous processes on board ships require accurate and reliable pressure measurement. Having the right controls in place enables ship owners to achieve minimal maintenance and reduced downtime
