2 "I never teach my pupils; I only attempt to provide the conditions in which they can learn." - Albert Einstein Overview The mission of EIMID is to establish a no-wall European Institute of Microbiology and Infectious Diseases by attracting the best students and post-docs to research related to these disciplines. Born in 2004, EIMID is a spontaneous initiative between five excellent institutions that cooperate in performing high-level research in the fields of microbiology and infectious diseases: Imperial College London (IC), London, UK Institut Pasteur (IP), Paris, France Karolinska Institutet (KI), Stockholm, Sweden Max Planck Institute for Infection Biology (MPIIB), Berlin, Germany Novartis Vaccines and Diagnostics (NVD), Siena, Italy

3 Background On October , scientists from five European research institutions met near Berlin to discuss the most recent results and to share their knowledge in the field of microbiology and infectious diseases: This was the birth of EIMID. Since then, EIMID reinforced the connection among the partners through high level training for young PhD students and post-docs, collaborative joint research projects and staff exchanges, and yearly scientific meetings. Projects With the assistance of the Italian scientific management company ALTA Srl, EIMID has been already awarded two European Commission training projects with an overall value of more than 4 million Euros: EIMID EST ( ), a 6th Framework Programme Marie Curie Action Host Fellowship for Early Stage Research Training, is a project that involves 10 PhD students from all over the world in high-level training at the five institutes. EIMID IAPP ( ), a 7th Framework Programme People Industry-Academia Partnerships and Pathways, is a project based on staff exchanges between Novartis (industry) and the four academic institutions.

4 EIMID Excellence With more than 1500 scientists, including PhD students and post-docs, the five renowned partners perform research on cutting edge topics. The scientific excellence is demonstrated by the large number of publications in highly prestigious journals such as Nature, Cell and Science. International cooperation Since its birth, EIMID partners cooperate in performing high-level research in Microbiology and Infectious Diseases. Through staff and students exchange the cooperation between the EIMID partners reached excellent scientific results and training goals. Multidisciplinary training The five institutes provide high-level training for researchers at different stages of their scientific careers, through the most advanced technologies in disciplines related to microbiology and infections: microbiology, immunology, bioinformatics, vaccinology. Training in complementary skills, such as Intellectual Propertiy Rights (IPR) protection, ethical issues and dissemination of science, is also provided within EIMID (the final result of the scientific dissemination course is available on Industry-academia cooperation The presence of a large multinational company gives to EIMID the inter-sectorial aspect necessary for reaching excellent applicable research results. Dedication The EIMID partners fully dedicate to research in order to defeat major diseases in developed and developing countries for improving global health.
