3 ASA Champions Academy 2013 Education Program The ASA Champions Academy Education Program offers workshops, general sessions, visits to Capitol Hill, and networking events designed for subcontractor champions, whether you re a chapter officer or director, committee member, membership recruiter, grass roots advocate, or chapter staff. Sunday, Sept. 29, :45 a.m. 12:00 p.m. Opening General Session: Maximizing Your Profits How do you win in today s tough economy? Becoming a lowercost producer is probably the best strategy, says presenter Gregg Schoppman, a principal with FMI Corporation, Tampa, Fla. Much like safety, productivity improvement must start at the top. Schoppman explains that, contrary to popular belief, productivity is not a field problem, but an important management and leadership issue. This general session will examine the key drivers that allow subcontractors and specialty trade contractors to maximize profitability in the short and long term. Participants will learn how minimal improvement in productivity will make their business more competitive on bid day and improve their bottom line. Improving productivity is the best way to address the current market challenges, Schoppman adds. Schoppman will also discuss best practices, including new technologies that will affect the industry. 12:00 p.m. 1:30 p.m. Round Table Discussions Luncheon Join peers for a round table discussion on information and ideas that can improve business performance and on priority industry issues. Facilitated by Russell O Rourke, Esq., Meyers, Roman, Friedberg & Lewis, Cleveland, Ohio, and ASA Chief Operating Officer Richard Bright, this round table discussion will allow each table of participants to openly discuss a variety of topics, including identifying new customers and niche markets, the top five onerous subcontract clauses retainage, pay-ifpaid, indemnification and hold harmless, additional insured, and waivers of lien and bond rights slow progress and final payments, and unlicensed and unqualified competition. A designee from each round table will then report back to the entire group the highlights from their discussions. 1:30 p.m. 2:45 p.m. Workshop: Cash Flow Is King! Your ability to manage cash flow directly influences your project success. In this workshop, learn how to master the major tasks of analyzing financial statements, tracking cash conversion periods, deciding when and if to borrow, keeping your working capital at adequate levels, and protecting your bonding capacity. After the project is finished, it is time to ask for payment, a time to look at retention and final billing preparation and knowing what your options are, says presenter Gregg Schoppman, a principal with FMI Corporation, Tampa, Fla. Schoppman will explain the ins and outs of cash flow and how to project cash flow by department or job. He will discuss how to track total cash flow by analyzing backlog, estimating monthly project income and anticipating cash disbursements. He will examine the punch-list processgiving notice, interim versus final, allocating funds to items, establishing escrow accounts, and finishing on time. Participants will also discover how to negotiate using bid documents, meeting minutes, notification copies, requests for change orders, cost records, estimates, schedules and correspondence as evidence. 1:30 p.m. 2:45 p.m. Workshop: Putting the Social in Your Media Usage to Increase Membership By now, many, if not most, businesses and associations have joined the social media bandwagon, realizing the value and importance of using such vehicles for connecting with customers and members. Some businesses and associations, however, may not be tapping the full potential of their social media channels, and what s worse, they could be doing more harm than good. Businesses and organizations that merely push out information promoting themselves, without actually engaging followers in conversations, are engaging in self media, not social media, says presenter Marc Ramsey, ASA director of communications. Customers and followers see right through promotional messages and can be turned off. To be more effective, put the social back into social media and begin connecting with followers through discussions and interactions. Participants in this workshop will gain insight into social media strategies that businesses and associations can use to more effectively connect with their customers and members and potential customers and prospective members! 3:00 p.m. 4:15 p.m. Workshop: How to Expedite Your Payments and Keep Your Customers Presenter Robert Andreu, Hunter Warfield, Tampa, Fla., will explain how to design an in-house debt collection process. He will examine three steps to accelerate the collection of past due debts, as well as technology s impact on debt collecting. Andreu will explain when it is time to send a customer to collection and illustrate tricks of the trade guaranteed to decrease outstanding receivable aging by as much as 50 percent. Monday, Sept. 30, :00 a.m. 10:30 a.m. General Session: Managing People In this general session, Charles Vander Kooi, Vander Kooi & Associates Inc., Littleton, Colo., draws on more than 40 years of experience in the construction industry to share his expertise on managing people. Vander Kooi will illustrate the good employee who has gone bad and how to deal with that, the different personalities that are needed to make up a company, and how to adjust to the baby boomer phenomenon. Reserve your hotel room at the Hilton Alexandria Old Town. 3
4 ASA Champions Academy 2013 Education Program 10:45 a.m. 12:00 p.m. Workshop: Getting Properly Trained Personnel The First Time Because of the recession and budget constraints, work force training programs devoted to developing basic skills often took a back seat to highly focused training modules designed to meet specific short-term needs or pressing business challenges. In this workshop, presenter Jamie Hasty, SESCO Management Consultants, Richmond, Va., examines how businesses are now refocusing their training programs on building communications skills, critical thinking, collaboration, and creativity, all of which are needed to improve employee productivity. Hasty will explain how to develop a training plan and how to understand the individuals you train. This workshop will provide the tools necessary to align the individual with your organization s performance requirements. Developing performance goals and standards can help even experienced managers build a more effective process for goal creation, clear work standards, and better job performance, Hasty says. By using smart goals with their team members, managers demonstrate their commitment to an open and consistent performance evaluation. Hasty will also discuss ways to evaluate and improve performance. 10:45 a.m. 12:00 p.m. Workshop: Design a Winning Strategy: Framing Your Issue and Determining the Pressure Points In this workshop, ASA Chief Advocacy Officer E. Colette Nelson will review the eight elements for designing a winning strategy for your legislative initiative and 30 tips for negotiating in a legislative environment. Participants will also learn how to motivate elected officials and avoid the nine most common pitfalls in communicating with them. 1:30 p.m. 2:45 p.m. Workshop: Home or Away Game: Passing a Venue Law in Your State What do you do when a subcontract clause requires you to resolve a claim under another state s law? Or before another state s court? In this workshop, presenter Eric Travers, Esq., Kegler, Brown, Hill & Ritter, Columbus, Ohio, will discuss the chilling effect of a forum-selection clause on a subcontractor s ability to assert a claim. Travers will review how some states have already addressed this challenge by voiding such clauses as against public policy when inserted into construction subcontracts, and explore the tactics and arguments that will help you sell a venue legislative initiative in your state. 3:00 p.m. 4:15 p.m. Legislative Briefing: What s Hot, What s Not: Subcontractor Issues on Capitol Hill In this legislative briefing, ASA Chief Advocacy Officer E. Colette Nelson will discuss the hottest subcontractor issues on Capitol Hill. Participants will learn how to talk about the issues, respond to difficult questions, and make the most of their visits with legislators and staff on Capitol Hill. Participants will also practice their lobbying skills and get the tools they need for a successful lobbying visit. Tuesday, Oct. 1, :30 a.m. 4:00 p.m. Meetings on Capitol Hill 1:30 p.m. 2:45 p.m. Workshop: How to Deal with Unqualified/ Unlicensed Competitors In this workshop, presenter Michael Schrier, Esq., Jackson Kelly PLLC, Washington, D.C., will examine a range of legal and legislative strategies available to subcontractors to address the rise of unlicensed or unqualified competition. Options that Schrier will discuss include utilizing various state licensing agencies or secretaries of state, the state or federal department of labor, state or federal unfair trade laws, and state or federal government contracting laws to lawfully expose and attempt to correct unfair competitive practices. Schrier will also discuss the potential drawbacks, costs, and risks associated with each strategy. 4 Register online for the Academy, or fax registration form on back to (703)
