2 A Monument Honoring a US Marine Hero In LIFE Magazine s Celebrating Our Heroes, listed alongside George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Martin Luther King, is a small Mongolian mare named Reckless, who became the greatest war hero horse in American history. Reckless was so heroic during the Korean War she was officially promoted to the rank of Staff Sergeant by the Commandant of the US Marine Corps, a rank never before or since bestowed upon an animal. During the Battle for Outpost Vegas in March 1953, on one day alone, Reckless made 51 trips from the Ammunition Supply Point to the firing sites, most of the time on her own. She carried 386 rounds of ammunition on her back (over 9,000 lbs) and walked over 35 miles through open rice paddies and up steep mountains with enemy fire coming in at the rate of 500 rounds a minute. Wounded twice, she never stopped. She even shielded Marines going up to the line, and helped carry the wounded to safety. There s no telling how many lives she helped save that day. It s time we honored this horse in the manner she richly deserves with a Memorial Monument. We are hoping to place the Monument near the National Korean War Memorial in Washington, DC as a fitting tribute. A second Monument and memorial grave marker is planned for Camp Pendleton, where Reckless lived out her days, and is buried. There has never been another horse like Reckless, and her memory deserves this kind of honor and recognition.

5 Donation Levels Every donation, no matter how large or small, will receive a Certificate of Thanks and Appreciation for your kind and generous support of the Memorial Monument to SSgt Reckless. Every donation is also tax-deductible through our 501 (c) 3 non-profit corporation, Angels Without Wings, Inc., dba Sgt Reckless Memorial Fund. On the Sgt Reckless website ( we will also be posting the names of contributors (unless you do not want your name listed) under the appropriate level. Donors: $1-999 (Listed alphabetically on website and where contributors are published) Bronze Donors: $1,000-$2,499 (Listed alphabetically on website and where contributors are published) Silver Donors: $2,500-$4,999 (Listed alphabetically on website and where contributors are published) Gold Donors: $5,000 + (Name on plaque of statue spots available - listed in order of receipt of donation. You will also receive a beautiful small bronze bust of Reckless. ) Platinum Donors: $10,000 + (Name on plaque of statue - 5 spots available - listed in order of size of donation. 6 Fundraising Besides the normal fundraising activities that will generate smaller donations, we have a fundraising program that we feel will generate the most income quickly. For a $5,000+ donation (tax-deductible), the Donor will have their name inscribed on the plaque of the Memorial (see sample plaque* below). We have 24 of these spaces available (and maybe as many as 30 - per Memorial), and names will be listed in order of receipt of donation. Donors will also receive a lovely bronze bust of Reckless as our gift for their generosity. For our Platinum Donors, those that give a donation of $10,000+ (tax-deductible), their name will be in larger type in the center of the plaque, listed according to size of the donation. We have only 5 spaces for these donations (per Memorial). These Donors will also receive a beautiful bronze maquette of the Memorial as our gift. Until a site has been chosen for the first Memorial Monument we hope to place in Washington, DC, we will take pledges for the donations at this time. Once the details are in place, and the site has been chosen, we will then convert those pledges into donations. Donors are asked to sign a pledge (enclosed) which secures their placement on the plaque. There will be two separate fundraisings - one for the first Memorial in Washington, DC, and one for the second Memorial and grave marker at Camp Pendleton. * This sample plaque is just to give people an idea as to how the names may be placed. The descriptions on the plaque will change, and the format of the actual plaque may be totally different when finalized.

By pledging $5,000 or more, I am securing my position on the Memorial s plaque, placement to be determined by order of receipt of the pledge. I will convert my pledge to an actual donation of money only when the site has been determined and the Fund is moving forward. When notified of this information by the Fund, and asked by the Sgt Reckless Memorial Fund to convert my pledge into a monetary donation, I will have fourteen (14) days to do so. If after the end of fourteen (14) days I have not converted my pledge into a donation, I will lose my place on the plaque, and it will be given to someone else.
