1 MARTIN LUTHER KING JR. MEMORIAL DEDICATION INFORMATION TIPS If you re searching for hotel reservations. Note that many hotels in and around Washington, DC require 2- or 3-night minimum stays during this period. Try modifying your search dates if you find limited availability, and be sure to expand your search to include the entire metro area for best results. Contact our team at Destination DC ( MLK) for recommendations on hotels that may have availability. Allow plenty of time to get to the ceremony. You can expect large crowds and tight security on the dedication day. Dress in layers. The dedication event takes place outdoors, and August weather can be quite humid and hot. Because you may be walking or standing, you ll also want to wear comfortable shoes, wear sunscreen and wear a hat. Plan ahead. Check back to this site for information on access points to public viewing areas so that you ll know exactly where to go. Take public transportation. Many streets around the National Mall will be closed for vehicle traffic and parking. Allow extra time for lines and crowds. Metro, DC's public transportation system, will be operating on a weekend schedule 7am-3am. Arrive early or carpool, as parking at stations is limited and is expected to fill up quickly. You can also avoid waiting in line at Metro fare card machines by purchasing daily passes in advance.
2 FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS When is the Dedication? The Dedication is scheduled for Sunday, August 28, 2011 from 11:00am 2:00pm. Where is the Memorial located? The Memorial is located at the intersection of West Basin Drive SW and Independence Avenue SW in Washington, DC. The future address of the Memorial will be 1964 West Basin Drive SW. Washington, D.C What will the operating hours be for the Memorial after it is dedicated? The Memorial will have the same operating hours as all other National Memorials on the National Mall. The public may visit the park 24 hours a day. However Rangers are on duty to answer questions from 9:30 A.M. to 11:30 P.M. daily. What are the restricted/ prohibited items to the ceremony? To avoid lengthy security delays, we recommend that guests not bring prohibited items, and avoid (if possible) hard-to-search items like baby strollers. Items that are prohibited include: coolers, backpacks, large handbags, umbrellas, chair-back seats, mace and similar substances, or weapons of any type. Items that are permitted include cameras, video recorders, uncased binoculars, small handbags, pagers, cell phones, seat cushions and appropriate clothes for weather conditions.
3 What is the list of events around Dedication? There will be events starting Thursday, August 25 through the dedication. The schedule of events is located on our website under Week of Dedication so that you man plan your travel schedule. Our website is When will the schedule of the Dedication events be released? Please continue to check the website for the latest event updates and listing. Is the public invited to Dedication? The Dedication of the Memorial will be free and open to the public. Are tickets required to attend the Dedication Ceremony? Tickets for certain areas will be required. These tickets will be allocated based on a lottery system and will be free of charge. Information about the ticket processes is available on our website Is it possible to receive priority seating? Entrants may request up to 6 tickets. Tickets are free of charge and may not be sold or traded, and are non-transferrable. An address is necessary to enter the lottery via this website. If you do not have an address, please call to be registered for the lottery. Selection will be random, with no preference for early entry into the lottery. The ticket recipients will be notified by on June 15th. To enter visit our website
4 I am a donor, how do I enter the lottery for donor tickets? As a donor, you have already been entered into a special lottery for (2) tickets to the Dedication. Winners will be notified via by June 15 th. In addition, if you are not drawn for tickets from the donor lottery, your name will automatically be moved and entered into the public lottery. What is the closet Metro stop to the memorial? The closest Metro stations to the memorial are Smithsonian (orange or blue line) or Federal Triangle (orange or blue line) Metro hours of operation on the day of the dedication will be 7am to 3 am. There are parking lots at various metro station, please visit to plan your transportation. How far is the closet Metro stop from the memorial? The Smithsonian and Federal Triangle stop are each about 1.5 mile walk. Please continue to visit for any transportation updates What s the best way to arrange a group trip? The best way to arrange a group trip (over 10 guests) is to contact Morgan Maravich with Destination DC via at morgan.maravich@destinationdc.com.
5 Will there be parking available for commercial vehicles? How close can they park to the dedication site? Due to increased security and various road closures we recommend bus drivers/tour operators utilize the RFK stadium parking lot. This lot is located at 2400 East Capitol Street, SE, Washington, D.C. just off of I-295 and I-395. Free shuttle service will be provided to/from this parking lot and the Dedication Ceremony. On Sunday, August 28, 2011 shuttle service will begin at 7:00AM. Any attendees arriving at this lot later then 10:00AM cannot be guaranteed entry into the event due to on-site security. Shuttle buses will be handicap accessible and there will be handicap parking available at the satellite parking lot. To register your buses for a guaranteed parking spotplease return to our website at the beginning of May for complete registration details. Are there any hotel packages available? Many Washington area hotels are offering special rates and packages surrounding the Dedication. Please check our website at for local offerings and to make reservations under About Washington, DC or call MLK. If I m staying outside the city, how should I get downtown? What can I expect? Where can I park? We recommend that you take public transportation to the official events. You can pre-purchase all-day Metro passes in advance to avoid waiting in line. Additional information about station hours and route modifications will be posted at as it becomes available. If you choose to drive, please note that streets surrounding the National Mall will be closed to vehicles. Plan to park away from the downtown core and walk or take Metro.
6 Will any attractions be closed during the ceremony? You can expect all DC attractions to be open during normal business hours. Check their website or call the attraction in advance of your visit to confirm its hours. Can you suggest a three- or four-day itinerary for me/ my family/ my group? You can view some sample itineraries by visiting the Experience DC section of our site to look for ideas for families, foodies, African-American history buffs and more Where is the MLK Memorial Commemorative Store? The official store for dedication week souvenirs. All proceeds from sale of these items benefit the Washington, DC Martin Luther King Jr. National Memorial Project Foundation, Inc. 7 Will the programs/activities surrounding Dedication be wheelchair accessible? Yes, they will. Plan for a long day and bring extra needed medicines that you are currently taking or might need for ailments or allergies. Keep a list of medications you are currently taking and any serious medical conditions that you have on a list (easily accessible) to aid medical staff in case of an emergency. In case of emergency you may also want to have a list of emergency contacts on your person. Oxygen equipment as well as seeing-eye dogs will be permitted at all official Dedication events. For the Dedication, seating for persons requiring the use of wheelchairs is available. Parties that include wheelchair attendees will be seated together within a designated ADA seating area. Please note that wheelchairs will not be available at the event. How can I volunteer at Dedication? Please visit to register to be a volunteer. How do I apply to sing/perform/read/speak at Dedication or the surrounding events? How may an organization participate in the dedication? The program has been set and planned. All the official events are being planned by the Foundation.
