2 The rubber and plastic machinery sector one This sector includes a series of machines and equipment that the industry divides into the following: Preparation and recycling machines Extruders Molding machines (by injection or by blowing) Presses Welding machines Other machines, components and spare parts Spanish sector overview two The Spanish rubber and plastics machinery sector offers a wide range of technologically-advanced equipment that can provide solutions for all of today s rubber and plastic processing needs. It has also managed to adapt to the changing requirements of its clients, and for some time it has developed its technology so that materials can be processed in a more environmentally-friendly and energy-efficient way. This sector comprises 5 companies and includes firms that are well equipped with the human and financial resources and production capacity needed to operate at an international level. Although the number of companies is relatively small, Spain has a highly-varied range of machinery that covers nearly every type of production process. This sector is made up of national companies that manufacture the main machines. The small number of companies means that there is little competition, since each firm specializes in a different type of machinery. Furthermore, each product has a different completion process, which means that client purchasing decisions are different for the various kinds of equipment. The subsectors The largest subsector in Spain by number of companies is the injection machinery subsector, which represents 6% of all sales, followed by flexographics (5%) and extrusion (%). The innovation and development The Spanish sector is outstanding in terms of the product and process improvements that enable it to adapt quickly to the constant changes in its client sectors such as the packaging and packing, automotive and pharmaceutical industry, etc. Some 65% of companies are capable of identifying and meeting the needs of the market in a profitable way, although just 0% of companies have long-term innovation plans. Sector strengths The sector maintains its position in the domestic market primarily due to the level of technology in the products it supplies. Some companies are global leaders and have positioned their brands among the most prestigious international marques. Knowledge and control of the distribution channels are an important asset to the sector, which, combined with client loyalty, help to support the growth of its companies. In addition to offering high-quality technological solutions, Spanish companies have invested in client service to provide a competitive advantage, reducing delivery times, manufacturing customized equipment for clients, improving after-sales service and even opening centers in foreign markets to be closer to their clients. Foreign investment There is a very high level of foreign investment in this sector. Competition mainly comes from Italian and German companies as well as Asian firms. Foreign firms invest in Spain for two reasons: firstly, to have a presence in the domestic market and secondly to channel exports to Latin American markets. Integration with other sectors These companies have close ties with other industries, such as canning and bottling, packing and packaging and the food, chemical, automotive and pharmaceutical industries, with which they share distribution channels and potential clients. Some companies specialize in R&D+i and subsequently assemble machinery and provide a service to end users. Others, however, continue to manufacture all their own components, machining the pieces to be used in the items produced by their machinery. Some companies, however, outsource machining processes to third parties and subcontract the manufacture of parts to specialized workshops.

Sector associations IMAPC Spanish Plastics and Rubber Machinery Manufacturers Association The most representative association in the sector is AMEC/IMAPC, a non-profit entity that represents 75% of all rubber and plastic machinery manufacturers in Spain and whose companies account for more than 0% of the Spanish sector s exports. AMEC/IMAPC is an active member of EUROMAP, the European association of plastic and rubber machinery manufacturers. 5
