1 HIST 3P98 French Canada Winter 2011 Instructor: Dr. M. Course Description: The study of French Canada is not just about Québec and those Frenchspeaking Canadians who identify themselves as Québecois; significant numbers of Frenchspeaking Canadians are not inhabitants of Quebec, and some, such as Acadians, consider themselves to be distinct. Issues of religion, language, culture, nationalism and identity are all integral to discussions of French Canadian history and will be important themes in this course. French Canadians have had a long presence in North America, and a good understanding of their history is important, not only for Canadian history, but also North American history. The history of French Canada is thus complex, made even more so by the historiography of this part of Canadian history, the study of which will constitute a significant part of this course. Course Objectives: By the end of the course students should be able to: identify major events and developments in French Canadian history and analyze their impact on French Canadians and on Canada s history assess the relative merits and shortcomings of the historiography of French Canadian history in written work and during seminar discussions develop and effectively support an argument in written work and seminar discussions Evaluation: Seminar Participation 20% Seminar Discussion Leadership 5% Seminar Response Papers 10% Historiographical Report 15% Essay 25% Final Exam 25% For the final exam, students will be responsible for all material covered in lectures, seminars, assigned readings and written work. Academic Misconduct and Plagiarism: Academic misconduct will be penalized, e.g. grade of zero on an assignment, grade of zero for the course and/or suspension or expulsion from the university. 2 University Undergraduate Calendar. Style guides, such as Mary Lynn Rampolla, ed. A Pocket Guide to Writing in History, are good resources for understanding when to cite a source and how to avoid other forms of plagiarism. SEMINARS: Seminars and the assigned readings for this course are intended to not just assist you in learning more about the topic/ event, but also to expand your knowledge and understanding of the historiography of French Canada. Seminar Participation: Seminars are a required part of the course. You are responsible for your own informed participation in every seminar discussion and your participation mark will be based on the quantity and quality of your contributions to each discussion. If you miss a seminar, you will receive a participation grade of zero for that seminar unless you can provide approved documentation of illness, or other approved circumstances. See Due Dates and Late Penalties below for more detailed information. Seminar Response Papers: You will be required to hand in a one-page response paper in each seminar. No late papers will be accepted. The paper will answer the question posed for that week s seminar (the question will be posted in the week preceding the seminar on ISAAK make sure that you answer the right question!). Your response is to be based on all assigned readings for that particular seminar. The papers will simply receive a pass/ fail grade. You will receive a pass if you answer the question and have demonstrated that you have read all the readings. To save paper, you do not need to include a title page with the response paper, just make sure your name and seminar number is on the top right corner of the paper. Seminar Leadership: Students will be responsible for leading one of the seminar discussions. Leadership will be evaluated according to the following: Leaders will provide seminar members with a one-page written guideline for the discussion, consisting of a brief paragraph explaining the thesis and main points of each reading, followed by a few broad questions intended to elicit discussion. Discussions should focus on: 1. examining historical issues; analysing the relationships between issues and events 2. assessing the arguments and methods of historians (i.e. historiography) Opinion questions (i.e. Why? What do you think?) are far more effective in facilitating interesting and engaged discussions than detailed fact questions. Questions that prompt discussions about links between readings are particularly useful, especially in concluding good seminar discussions. If you are absent for the seminar which you are supposed to lead, you will receive a mark of zero 0 except in legitimate, documented circumstances. HIST 3P98 Winter

3 Written Assignments: Please make sure that your name, student number, course code, and your seminar number are clearly indicated on the title page. Written work cannot be submitted by electronic means, i.e. , fax. If you do not submit your paper during lecture, you are responsible for ensuring that you submit it to the History department essay drop box. Students are expected to keep all research notes, drafts and a copy of their written work until after the examination. You may be asked to submit these materials. Failure to do so promptly will result in a failing grade for the assignment. Students should note that written assignments will be subject to scrutiny using electronic means of detecting plagiarism: www. turnitin.com. Announcements and information regarding this requirement for assignments will be made on ISAAK. Due Dates and Late Penalties: The penalty for late assignments is 5% per day (weekends count as 2 days). Extensions must be approved by the instructor before the due date if at all possible. There will be no extensions granted except in legitimate, documented circumstances (i.e. illness). Consult the Student Health Services website for full details on required medical documentation. This university-approved medical documentation must be presented to the instructor. Computer/ printer problems are not grounds for an extension. Written Assignments will not be accepted after the last lecture. ** Submission of assignments is considered complete only when the paper has been submitted to the instructor AND electronically to Evaluation of Written Assignments: Written assignments will be evaluated according to the following criteria: quality of thesis, arguments, analysis, choice and use of evidence writing and clarity of expression (including, but not limited to grammar, spelling, structure, organization, etc.) accuracy and effectiveness of description development of links between sources and broader course themes choice of sources (Secondary sources must not be textbooks, popular histories (see Rampolla, 6 th edition, p.17) or websites (with the exception of electronic academic journals.)(primary source choice is also important (see relevant section in Rampolla). There are a number of good websites with relevant primary sources available, but it is important to use these with caution if in doubt, or if you are having difficulties locating primary sources, please consult the instructor.) proper format for footnote or endnotes and bibliography (see Rampolla or Chicago- Turabian Style Guide available through library website) Your historiographical report and essay must include the following statement with your signature on the title page: I have read and understood Brock University s policy on academic misconduct and the university s definitions of academic misconduct related to essays and assignments. 4 Choice of Topics for Report/ Essay: You may choose your topic for the written assignments, as long as it is directly concerned with an aspect of the history of French Canada it is a good idea to consult with the instructor on your choice. If one of the seminar topics particularly interests you, it can provide a foundation for your written assignments. Historiographical Report: DUE Tuesday February 1, to 1250 words (4-5 pages) minimum of 8 secondary sources this report will form the basis for the historiographical portion of your essay report must include identification of the major historiographical question(s) for your chosen topic, and an analysis of the secondary sources with regard to those major historiographical questions, including major schools of thought, points of debate, use of primary sources, and changes over time. your report should not include an assessment of the various arguments you will develop that in your essay, as part of your research Essay DUE Tuesday March 15, words (approx pages) minimum of 10 secondary sources and 2 primary sources while this is a research essay, you must include an historiographical discussion and assessment as part of your analysis. Your historiographical report will form the basis for the historiographical discussions and assessment in the essay.
