1 THE PROBLEM Welding electrodes are vulnerable to atmospheric moisture. Bound moisture in electrodes yields porous welds. As a result, electrodes fuse slowly. The arc too, is not forceful and there is an attendant spatter. The problem is severe with Hydrogen-controlled electrodes. These electrodes are essential for critical applications. Conventional electrodes used for such applications can cause underbead cracking in the heat-affected-zone. The low Hydrogen Iron powder type electrodes have great affinity for adsorbing atmospheric moisture. The release of Hydrogen from the flux during welding is detrimental to the weld quality (bead) since it causes HYDROGEN EMBRITTLEMENT. Manufacturers of electrodes specify desired temperature and time for drying the electrodes prior to use. Electrodes need to be maintained in a TOTALLY DRY CONDITION.
