Sri Lanka was affectionately known as Rathna-Deepa which means Gem Island. The name is a reflection of the natural wealth it possesses. The island produces rubies, sapphires, topazes, amethysts, garnets and many other types of precious stones more beautiful & valuable than any that are found in other parts of the world. Sri Lanka seems to possess a seemingly endless supply of gemstones, a fact which is clearly shown by another of its nicknames, The Jewel Box of the Indian Ocean. Sri Lanka, like no other locality on earth, has yielded precious stones and fine gems in a great profusion of gem species and varieties and will continue to do so for the foreseeable future.
