To help, we have listed some of the key components in identifying valves for interchange. IDENTIFY THE PPITIN The best rule of thumb is to understand the application, which can help to provide the best interchange while avoiding potentional duplication a problem. That means identifying the media, pressure and temperature. The application parameters also can help to identify the valve type. IDENTIFY THE MNUFTURER/MDE NUMER Most valves contain either a name plate that indicates the manufacturer and the model number, or this information is stamped into the casting. This also might indicate the design version # of the valve IDENTIFY THE VVE TYPE Is this a ball, butterfly, knife gate, globe or other type of valve? The first thing to look at is whether the valve is quarter turn (90 degrees from open to close), rising stem or linear. The model # helps i.d. type. However, most qualified manufacturers include the seat and seal information on the valve tag. ody construction material often can be located on these tags as well as cast into the body. If this information is not readily available, look for another component nearby in the pipeline that might have this information. Pipe diameter charts also can prove to be helpful. This setup permits either side of the piping system to be disconnected without disturbing the other side.
