1 Queen s Hill Primary & Nursery School Newsletter June 2015 The school year is reaching it s climax with many events still to take place: some of the Year 6 children will be leaving early for transition to their high school, the Friends BBQ in July, Parents Evening for Year 1-6 children, a production of Romeo and Juliet for the children, the leavers assembly, a KS2 intra-school bench ball competition, a maths calculation session for parents, our annual Sports Day for Reception to Year 6 to name but a few events (See diary dates for more information). During this first week back we have seen our Year 3,4 and 5 children go to camp at Whitwell Hall. From early reports the children have had a fantastic time making boats, designing t-shirts, kayaking and making new friends, despite the wind and rain. The children in Key Stage 1 were lucky enough to receive a visit this week from an author and illustrator it was lovely to see how inspired the children were by listening to someone talk about their job. On a similar note I would like to ask for your help if you would be prepared to come in to school and talk to the children about why you love your job during a class or key stage assembly then please make yourself known to your child s phase leader. We would like to start running Why I love my job assemblies where parents can come in and inspire children. Children really do get inspired when a visitor comes into school and they would love to hear about what it is like to be a builder, carpenter, hairdresser, doctor, fireman, beautician etc. I look forward to hearing from you! Mike Roughsedge

3 Year 6 transition to High School The transition from Primary to High School is important in the lives of children and their families. At Queen s Hill Primary School we have a robust system to ensure that all students will have a successful transition and to help students and parents minimise anxiety about change. To achieve this, during this term the Year 5/6 teachers will be meeting with pastoral care staff and transition school leaders from all High Schools. During these meetings your child s needs will be discussed, along with any other relevant information to help promote a smooth transition in their education. These High School staff will then meet with the children to discuss any concerns they may have. Children with particular needs or on the school SEN(D) register will be discussed in further detail with meetings between our SENCo/class teachers and the High School SENCo (Special Educational Needs Coordinator). All children s subject levels and data are securely passed on to their High Schools, along with their school files and personal information. Finally, towards the end of this half term your children will have the opportunity to spend time at their new High Schools on transition days. These will be different dates and dependant on the High School. Your child s High School will send you a welcome pack this half term containing the details for transition. We want all students who leave Queen s Hill Primary School to do so with confidence and high self-esteem. This will help them to get used to their new High School routines and organisation with ease, and to develop new friendships and skills. We will ensure that they move on with the tools and emotional resilience needed to manage this change. As a result they will continue to be motivated and positive, whilst continuing to make good academic progress. If you have any worries or concerns about transition, feel free to contact myself and/or your child s High School to discuss anything. Mark Jones
4 Parents and Carers Calculation Meeting Tuesday 14th July, 3-4pm. Are you baffled by the methods we teach your children in maths? Come along to our calculation evening where we will talk you through how we teach the four mathematical operations in school. We will also talk about why we teach it this way and give you some top tips on how you can help your child at home. We look forward to seeing you there. The Maths Team A picture paints a 1000 words The art topic was launched in style, inspired by real artists! We rose to Mrs Sheppard s challenge to create a whole school art installation for the entrance hall. Each Key Stage looked at a different illustrator and created their own tile that became part of a huge rainbow mosaic. We learnt different art techniques and used a range of media. During the day we visited classrooms in our Houses and reflected on paintings in different ways, making links to other areas of the curriculum. If you haven't had a chance, pop in and have a look. During Art Curriculum Day the children created lots of art work that you will see around the school. We have chosen a selection of photos capturing the passion shown by the children.
5 Author Visit Key Stage 1 were delighted last Tuesday to meet the author and illustrator Clare Jarrett, who came in to talk to the children about what it is like to be an author and show the different techniques she uses for her illustrations. The children were all engaged and asked lots of interesting questions. Clare was delighted the children showed such enthusiasm with their reading and has contacted me to say she would be delighted to come back to our school in the future. WELL DONE Key Stage 1. We are looking forward to meeting Steve Parker, a non-fiction author, in Lower Key Stage 2 later this week.
