1 Year 8  Maths Autumn Term Whole Numbers and Decimals Order, add and subtract negative numbers. Recognise and use multiples and factors. Use divisibility tests. Recognise prime numbers. Find square numbers and square roots. Round whole numbers and decimals. Order and compare decimals. Add, subtract, multiply and divide whole numbers. Find the prime factor decomposition of a number. Find the lowest common multiple (LCM) and highest common factor (HCF) of two numbers. Recognise and cube and cube roots. Use divisibility tests to find factors and identify primes. Use, multiply and divide numbers written in index form. Round numbers to a given power of 10 and use rounding to make estimates. Use trial and improvement to find square and cube roots. Number Mental Calculations To know and apply the order of operations, including brackets. Strengthen and extend mental methods of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. Solve problems using addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. Round numbers to the nearest 1000, 100, 10, integer or tenth (1dp) Multiply and divide a number by 10, 100, 1000 and 0.1 and Solve problems using mental strategies by breaking the problems down into smaller steps. Use the rules of negative numbers. Calculate with positive and negative powers of ten. Perform mental addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. Use standard written methods for addition and subtraction with decimals.
2 Geometry and Measures  Measures, Area and Perimeter Use, read and write standard metric units. Convert between metric and imperial units when given the conversion. Read measurements from scales. Find the perimeter and area of rectangles. Calculate the area of shapes made from more than one rectangle (compound shapes). Use appropriate metric units to measure length, mass, capacity. Know rough metric equivalents to imperial units. Calculate the perimeter and area of a triangle. Calculate the area of a parallelogram and a trapezium. Know the names of parts of a circle. Calculate the circumference and area of a circle. Number Fractions, Decimals and Percentages Simplify equivalent fractions. Be able to convert fractions into decimals to order fractions. Add and subtract fractions. Find a fraction of a quantity. Calculate percentages of amounts. Convert fractions and decimals into percentages. Understand, compare and order decimals. Order fractions. Express one number as a fraction of another. Express one number as a percentage of another. Convert between percentages, fractions and decimals. Convert between decimals and fractions and order them. Multiply and divide fractions. Calculate percentages of an amount and percentage changes. Calculate an original amount from the result of a percentage change.
3 Algebra Expressions and Formulae Use symbols to make simple expressions. Substitute values into simple expressions and formulae Simplify expressions by collecting like terms. Expand brackets. Use indices to simplify expressions. Construct a formula for different situations. Use index notation, including negatives indices, and basic index laws. Factorize an expression by taking out a common factor. Derive and substitute into a formula. Change the subject of a formula. Geometry and Measures Angles and 2D Shapes Use the sum of angles at a point (360) and on a straight line (180) to solve problems. Recognise vertically opposite angles. Know that the interior angles of a triangle add up to 180 degrees. Recognise parallel and perpendicular lines. Know the properties of quadrilaterals. Use the opposite angle rule. Know and apply the angles in parallel lines rules (Corresponding and alternate angles). Know and use some properties of polygons. Recognise congruent shapes. Reason geometrically using the properties of angles at a point and on a line and intersecting and parallel lines. Recognise the different types of triangles and quadrilaterals and use their properties. Recognise the different types of polygons and calculate interior and exterior angles for regular polygons.
4 Spring Term Algebra  Graphs Coordinates are points on an axis (going across and up) Read and plot coordinates in four quadrants Use a table of values to draw a straightline graph. Identify the equations of horizontal and vertical graph lines. Be able to read and interpret reallife graphs and conversion graphs. Draw a straight line graph of a function. Recognise the equations of sloping lines and lines parallel to the axes. Interpret and draw real life graphs. Plot the graph of a linear function and use the equation of a straight line. Plot the graph of a nonlinear function. Find the midpoint of a pair of coordinates. Plot the graph of an equation where y is not the subject. Statistics Plan a survey and collect a set of data. Use frequency tables to collect and show data. Draw pie charts and bar graphs. Find the mean, median, mode and range of a list of numbers. Find the mean, median, mode and range of data from a table. Construct bar charts and frequency diagrams. Calculate statistics for sets of discrete and continuous data. Construct scatter graphs and understand correlation (positive and negative). Draw and interpret stem and leaf diagrams. Understand different types of data and how they may be analysed. Create questionnaires and record sheets and use them to collect data. Analyse data in terms of frequency and averages. Compare different types of statistical distributions.
5 Geometry and Measures Transformations and Scale Find reflections in a mirror line. Recognise reflection and rotational symmetry. Rotate shapes on a square grid through different angles. Translate shapes. Make tessellating patterns. Reflect, rotate and translate 2D shapes. Transform 2D shapes using combinations of transformations. Enlarge a 2D shape by positive and fractional scale factors using projection lines. Identify all the symmetries of shapes (reflective and rotational symmetry). Be able to draw and describe enlargements by different scale factors, including fractions. Use and interpret scale drawings. Number Written and Calculator Methods Use the column method to add and subtract whole numbers and decimals. Use the standard method to multiply whole numbers. Use long and short division. Use written methods to solve problems. Use a calculator to work out longer calculations. Use the order of operations correctly. Solve problems using standard methods of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. Perform mental multiplication and division Use a calculator to calculate with powers, roots, brackets and fractions. Interpret the results of a calculation in context (E.g Rounding up an answer if you need a whole number of children).

Algebra  Sequences Find and use rules that describe sequences of numbers. Use the term to term rule to generate sequences. Use sequences to solve real life problems. Understand the connection between triangular and square numbers. Find and use the termtoterm rule in a sequence. Find and use the positiontoterm rule in a sequence. Recognise and describe geometric sequences Describe a linear sequence using a termtoterm rule. Describe a linear sequence using a positiontoterm rule. Describe a general sequence using a recursive formula (One that stays the same for each term).

Ratio and Proportion To be able to simplify ratios. Divide amounts into ratios. Express one amount as a proportion of a whole. Recognise and use direct proportion. Solve problems involving direct proportion. Calculate a percentage of an amount. Calculate a percentage increase or decrease. 8 Statistics  Probability Understand and use the probability scale from 0 to 1 Sort objects using a Venn diagram Use correct vocabulary to describe the likelihood of events. Find probabilities based on equally likely outcomes. Use diagrams and tables to record mutually exclusive outcomes. Calculate the probability that an event does not occur from the probability that it does (All probabilities add up to 1). Estimate probabilities by collecting data from an experiment. Compare experimental probabilities with theoretical probabilities. List the outcomes for combined events in a logical way. Use a tree diagram to list outcomes and calculate probabilities. Identify mutually exclusive events and calculate their probabilities. Geometry and Measures 3D Shapes Recognise and name 3D shapes. Use isometric drawings to visualise 3D shapes. Use nets of 3D shapes. Find the surface area of cubes and cuboids. Find the volume of a 3D shape by counting cubes. Draw plans and elevations of 3D shapes. Calculate the surface area and volume of cubes and cuboids. Calculate the volume of prisms. Name the 3D shapes and be able to draw their nets. Draw plans and elevations and isometric diagrams of 3D shapes. Calculate the surface area of a prism.
9 Everyday Maths Select and use appropriate calculation strategies to solve problems. Begin to develop mathematical knowledge by interpreting and solving problems. Begin to reason deductively to solve unfamiliar problems. Being confident in selecting the most appropriate and efficient calculation strategy to solve a problem.
