Fixing Instructions: 01 Porcelain to Screeded Concrete Floors Surface Tiles can be fixed to all structurally sound surfaces consisting of concrete, sand and cement screeds and renders, blockwork, masonry, cement board, plaster board, plaster, brick, steel, timber and existing tiling etc. and as they are fully vitrified can be used both internally and externally. Please check with the Domus Technical Department to ensure that tiling specifications are correct. (Tel: )
Quality Requirements All work to be carried out in accordance with B.S Part 3 and B.S Approved competent tiling contractors should be employed with experience of similar projects. Specified materials only should be used, all in accordance with manufacturer s recommendations. Existing timber floors must be as rigid as possible. Any flexing should be less than 1/360 over. Preparation All surfaces to be tiled must be sound and clean, free from laitance, release and curing agents, wax oils, detergents, loose particles, dust and standing water. Surfaces may be damp prior to fixing, and sometimes this is desirable to avoid excessive suction. 01 Substrates Concrete slabs should be mature and stable, this usually means 6 weeks old, if a bonded screed is to be applied. If concrete slabs are large and joints coincide with screed daywork joints and movement joints in the tile finish, a shorter period may be satisfactory. With an unbonded screed the age of the slab should be sufficient to allow adequate strength development to support the screed. For traditional screed, on-site testing should be carried out with a BRE screed tester 14 days after laying. Any screed failing this test should be replaced. The screed tolerance should be as specified in the Codes of Practice, i.e. no gap under a 2 m straight edge should exceed 3 mm. Rapid Setting Screeds Mapei Topcem is a rapid drying special hydraulic binder for screeds, which when mixed with aggregates provides a rapid setting screed mix for tiling onto within 7 days. The screed should be mixed as follows: Preparing the mix. Carefully mix the Topcem with graded aggregates and water mix proportions 7:1 screeded sand and Topcem, in a mixer or batcher for at least 5 minutes. The mix must be spread, tamped and levelled in the shortest possible time and in any event not more than an hour after the start of the preparation. Particular care must be taken with the quantity of water which must be such as to obtain a mix with a damp earth consistency that under a float finish will compact itself to The screed should be uniformly mixed using Portland cement to BS12 and clean sharp sand graded accordingly. For machine mixing, a rotating blade or pan type mixer is suggested. For bonded screeds, use a slurry bond coat of: Planicrete 1 part Water 1 part Prtland cement 2 parts by weight Place screed mortar while bond coat is still wet and tacky, compact well, to ensure all voids are filled. All screeds should be a minimum of 4 weeks old or a drying time of 6/8 days per cm. It is also possible to use a rapid setting screed as following details. produce a closed and smooth surface without water surfacing. Topcem, aggregates and water can be mixed using: a drum mixer, an ordinary concrete mixer, a screw mixer, a truck mixer. Mixing manually with a shovel is not recommended, as it does not provide a good dispersion of the components of Topcem with the subsequent need to increase the quantity of water in order to obtain the right mix. Where it is not possible to use a mechanical mixer and for small works that require mixing by hand, it is recommended to thoroughly dry mix the Topcem with the aggregates before adding the water in small amounts, turning the mix until a damp earth consistency is obtained.
Rapid Setting Screeds (Cont d) Any floating screeds the minimum screed depth is 70mm, and if the background materials are Recommended Mix Mapei Topcem one 20kg bag Graded aggregates screeding sand 140 /160kg Water 10-12kg for dry aggregate, the amount of water could vary depending on the moisture in the aggregate. If the screed is to be a bonded screed then it should be bonded using the same slurry bond coat as described for a traditional screed. Levelling/Smoothing Any areas that exceed the required tolerances should be corrected with a surface levelling mortar such as Mapei Ultraplan Eco Range 1mm-10mm or Ultraplan Maxi Range 3mm 30mm. 02 compressible a steel mesh should be incorporated. Any screeds above 100mm should be reinforced and a larger aggregate adopted, using a mix of: 1 part Topcem 3.5 parts screeding 3.5 parts Pea Gravel mixed as detailed above. Before applying the Levelling Mortar the Screed should be primed with Ecoprim T Primer. This is particularly important for large format porcelain. Waterproof Membrane to Wet Areas Apply Mapei Mapelastic Smart waterproof membrane to all walls and floors. All walls should be covered to the full height of the walls in accordance with the following instructions. Prior to starting the main installation reinforce all points of possible stress such as wall and floor intersections, corners, coves, gullies and drains. These should be strengthened with Mapeband Polymer coated tape before main application, adhering the band using a coat of Mapelastic Smart applied by brush or roller. All general areas apply Mapelastic Smart using a trowel, roller, brush or spray gun to a thickness of approximately 1mm over whole area. Leave the Mapelastic Smart to become touch dry and seal with a final coat of liquid The waterproof membrane should be suitably protected to avoid damage prior to the fixing of tiles. Tile fixing may be carried out within 24 hrs. depending on temperature and humidity. Fixing - Thick Bed Method Adhesive should be Mapei Keraquick rapid setting Adhesive mixed to a suitable consistency, stiff enough to support the tile but not allowed to skin over, otherwise correct adhesion will not occur. The adhesive should be applied to the screed and combed with a 12 x 12 mm notched trowel. Tiles should be back filled to ensure solid bedding is achieved, i.e., a thin coat of adhesive is spread onto the back of each tile before it is positioned onto the combed adhesive bed and firmly tamped down, this will ensure a solid bed of adhesive is achieved. Please note that it is important that adhesive mortar is not allowed to skin over should this happen the adhesive bed should be removed and re-applied with fresh adhesive.
03 NOTE:- For large format prcelain 600 x 600mm or larger, we recommend the addition of Mapei Grouting Grouting may be carried out as soon as the tiles have set firm usually 3/4hours. Using Ultracolor Plus Polymer modified grout for joint widths of 3mm or more mixed to a smooth paste and allowed to slake for 2-3 minutes and re-mixed before use. This ensures that the colours are dispersed throughout the grout. Apply the grout to the area to be grouted filling the joints using a hard rubber float ensuring that the joints are fully filled without voids. The excess grout should be removed as work proceeds, this again Latex Plus to the adhesive mix in accordance with manufacturers recommendations. can be done using the hard rubber trowel working the trowel diagonally across to the joints. When the mixture loses its plasticity and become opaque, which is usually between minutes after application, clean the excess grout with a damp hard cellular sponge rinsing the sponge frequently using two separate buckets of water, one to remove the excess and the second to wash down with clean water. Finishing can still be carried out between 50 & 60 minutes after the application of the grout using a dampened scotchbrite pad to finish the surface of the grout. Movement Joints Movement joints should be positioned in accordance with B.S Part 3 Clauses 6.8 & which requires movement joints to be positioned at: 1. Perimeters at Junctions of all walls and floors 2. At any structural movement joints on exactly the same line 3. For large tiled areas at 8-10 metre centres in both directions 4. In areas with under floor heating in maximum bays of 40m² maximum size bay 8 x 5m Protection and Cleaning To ensure quality of the completed installation is maintained, finished surfaces must be protected at all stages Prior to the grouting operation we would suggest that a light clean is provided to the floor to remove any dust or dirt this should be done using Fila Cleaner (diluted 1:30 with water) which is a mild alkaline based cleaner and will remove any adhesive residues. Grouting as described above should be carried out in accordance with these recommendations and the tile cleaned as work progresses. The grout should cure for a minimum of 24 hours. Finally the floor should have one final clean using Fila Deterdek acid based cleaning chemical diluted at 1:10 with water to remove any grout residue left from the grouting process. To ensure quality of the completed tiling installation is maintained, finished surfaces must be protected at all stages. Tiling contractor should allow for protection as part of his package. Intermediate and final cleaning should be carried out in accordance with our standard Cleaning and Maintenance Instructions.
Notes The general guidance above is given without the opportunity of examining detailed drawings or inspecting sites. It must be clearly understood that these general recommendations are given solely in good faith and imply no liability whatsoever on behalf of Surface Tiles Ltd. 04 Where trade names have been suggested, this is as a matter of convenience and from general experience and, again, shall not be taken as any obligation on the part of Surface Tiles Ltd whatsoever. It should also be remembered that each engineer, local authority, and contractor submit their own individual requirements.
