5 New Treatment Controls Migraine & Other Headaches! BOTOX has been used safely and effectively for over twenty years in adults and even in small children to treat a variety of medical and aesthetic conditions, and has become a leading treatment for migraine and muscle tension headache. Medical scientists have learned that tiny injections of BOTOX (a medicine made from a highly purified, naturally occurring protein) are often very effective for the prevention of migraine, muscle tension headaches and for some other painful conditions like bruxism (jaw clenching or grinding teeth while sleeping). As time goes on, many of us notice brown spots and freckles on the backs of our hands and other sun exposed areas like the upper chest and face. This can become a cosmetic problem an obvious sign of premature aging of the skin. In other cases people develop broken blood vessels, in particular on the nose, face and upper chest. Some people have both brown discoloration Brown discoloration from sun damage Blood vessels on the face and nose and broken blood vessels. These problems are made worse by smoking, sun exposure, and also by conditions like rosacea. The care of patients who have rosacea and/ or sun damage is an important part of Dr. Smith s practice. You will usually be somewhat pink immediately after being treated, and your brown spots may become somewhat darker after treatment before they fade over the next week or two. Broken veins on the face tend to improve very rapidly, diminishing over several days after treatment. Bruising and swelling are very seldom a problem. Most patients return to work the same day or the day after treatment. You can apply makeup as soon as your treatment is finished. 8 Pearl Fractional Ablative Laser Treatment Really improve skin texture, color, and acne scarring. Dr. Smith has been watching the evolution of resurfacing technology for many years. Early technologies like Erbium-YAG and CO 2 laser either promised more than they delivered, or had risks and downtime that were unacceptable to Dr. Smith and his patients. Early fractional lasers (for example the Fraxel and the Sciton ProFractional) required up to six treatment sessions, caused considerable discomfort, and did not produce enough benefit to satisfy the needs of most patients. Finally, fractional ablative laser technology matured, and the Cutera Pearl Fractional laser was introduced. The Pearl Fractional ablative laser uses a wavelength of laser light in the sweet spot between those used by Erbium YAG and CO 2 laser, giving Dr. Smith s patients the right balance of resurfacing and regeneration of deeper tissues, and can deliver good results in one or occasionally two treatments, with a minimum of fuss and bother. Pearl Fractional laser treatment is a non-invasive treatment using a microscopic laser beam that treats a fraction of the skin at a time. This has bridged the gap between the ablative and non-ablative laser techniques used to treat sun-damaged and aging skin, treating both the epidermal and dermal layers of the skin. Pearl Fractional stimulates your own natural repair and remodeling processes, refining deeper lines (in particular around the mouth and eyes), and smoothing out irregular texture, large pores and acne scarring. The color of the skin also improves, and brown discoloration from sun damage fades. The benefits of treatment with Pearl Fractional Laser resurfacing can last for many years, in particular when the patient reduces future skin damage by wearing sunscreen and minimizing smoking. Pearl Fractional treatment can be done before, after, or on the same day as treatment with BOTOX and fillers. A Fraction of the Time The other benefit to fractional laser is recovery time - or the lack of time it takes to get back to your regular routine. Fractional laser treatment itself takes less than 60 minutes, and patients go home shortly afterwards. Healing time is surprisingly brief. You get great results and don t have to put your life on hold. Slow Down the Clock Simple steps you can take to preserve your appearance In addition to treatments designed to repair or enhance an individual s appearance, Dr. Smith also provides practical advice which over the long-term can help you to look and feel your best. The application of a sunscreen or moisturizer/sunscreen to your face, ears, neck and upper mid-chest every morning of the year can greatly reduce the cumulative effects of UV exposure on your skin, and slow down the clock. If you are going to get extra sun exposure that day, then apply extra sunscreen and perhaps consider wearing a hat with a brim. Tanning beds are to be strictly avoided in addition to accelerated skin aging and skin cancer, people have been known to get warts and herpes from tanning beds. Keep your teeth in good condition! Bone loss starts to affect the face as early as age 25 in women and 45 in men. Bone volume loss from the face is related to low grade periodontal disease in many cases, and this can be reduced by daily flossing and by twice yearly dental examination and cleaning. Smoking speeds up facial aging, increases the damaging effects of sun exposure, and can also increase the risk of periodontal disease and associated facial bone volume loss. If you are a smoker, your family doctor can help you to quit. Don t give up trying to quit smoking! A high-fat diet can speed up the rate at which skin ages in response to UV light, so try to moderate your diet over the long term. Dr. Smith and his staff have performed thousands of CoolGlide vascular laser treatments since CoolGlide laser treatment is a safe, fast, gentle and effective method for removal of unwanted blood vessels from all parts of the body. Blood vessels that have been treated are reabsorbed by the body, and the flow of blood is directed back down into deeper vessels, where it belongs. With only one or two treatment sessions, you can greatly improve the appearance of facial skin which has been disfigured by unwanted blood vessels and broken capillaries, for example because of sun damage or rosacea. 10 Annoying Growths or Skin Tags It is easy to get rid of annoying unsightly moles, skin tags and broken blood vessels. As we go through life, all of us gradually acquire benign but annoying growths on our skin. The most common of these are skin tags, moles, seborrheic keratoses, and cherry hemangiomas. Rarely, moles can turn into skin cancer, and very rarely there are skin cancers that Skin Tags Seborrheic Keratoses can look like SKs, skin tags or cherry hemangiomas. Dr. Smith is a specialist in Dermatology, and is always careful to examine each mole or other growth for signs suggestive of cancer before deciding what advice and treatment to offer you. Skin tags are flesh coloured or brown growths ranging in size from about 1 mm to 1 cm, most commonly hanging from the neck, underarms and groin. Dr. Smith can safely and painlessly remove your skin tags. No stitches are required, and in about a week or so it will be hard for anyone to see where the skin tags were. Venous Lakes are dark purple bumps on the lower lips, usually in people over the age of 40. These are actually collections of blood vessels, and can be easily and painlessly eliminated using my Cutera CoolGlide vascular laser. Seborrheic keratosis SKs are flesh coloured to brown or black, range in size from several mm to several cm, and often have a dry crumbly appearance, kind of like a piece of stuck on bubble gum or mud. As time goes on, SKs increase in size and number. SKs can be unpleasant to touch, embarrassing, unsightly and occasionally get irritated. Dr. Smith can remove your SKs without the need for stitches. Moles are benign flesh coloured or brown bumps, usually ranging in size from 1 mm to 1 cm, often on the face and neck, and less commonly on other parts of the body. Removal of benign moles can usually be done without the need for stitches, and the treated area heals up within a week or two. The cost to remove the lesions described above starts at $80, depending on the size, number and location of the things you would like treated. 11 Is it Time to Undo that Tattoo? Am I Being Vain? Times moves on, your tastes change, and your life changes. You change your clothes; you change your hairstyle and now you can fade or eliminate most unwanted tattoos. About 80% of people who get a tattoo eventually decide to get rid of it. Dr. Smith s state-of-the-art Candela ATV laser will gently and efficiently treat black, blue, green, red and other common tattoo colors. Dr. Smith always gives you plenty of comfortable and very effective local anesthesia, so that your treatment can be performed with little or no discomfort. If you wish, you can watch as the laser beam sweeps over your tattoo, often fading it as you watch! The Candela ATV laser works by breaking down the particles of tattoo ink in your skin to a smaller size, which is easier for your body to dispose of. If you are in a hurry to get rid of a tattoo, it can be treated as often as every two weeks. On the other hand, if you wait 6-12 months between treatments, your body will have more time to dispose of the ink, and a smaller number of treatments will be needed. Most patients wait about 3 months between treatments, but it is entirely up to you, depending on your personal preferences, schedule and budget. Thanks to new research in laser physics and physiology, in most cases it is possible for Dr. Smith to administer a double treatment at no extra cost getting an extra dose of laser energy into your tattoo: helping you to become free of your tattoo faster, with less discomfort and less expense than was possible even a few years ago. 12 Skin Care Advice for Your Big Event What Don t We Do? Looking and feeling your best for weddings, graduations and other major events requires planning ahead in the same way as one plans ahead for wardrobe and hairstyles. Everyone who will be in the public eye wants to look their best on the big day. Here are some simple tips for you: If you have a skin condition like rosacea or sun damage visit Dr. Smith at the Niagara Falls Dermatology & Skin Care Centre at least 3-4 months ahead of the big event so that your condition can be brought under control, and the necessary treatments can be fitted into your schedule and budget. Skin tags, moles and other growths can be removed, broken blood vessels and brown spots treated, and the tone and texture of your skin improved several months ahead of the big day. In general, it is wise to arrange your schedule and your budget so that BOTOX to relax and soften facial expressions, BOTOX for excessive sweating, fillers for creases and volume loss on the face, and laser treatments you want done will be completed at least a month before the big event. This will allow you to enjoy the benefits of treatment at any events which precede the big event, in addition to ensuring that you will feel good and look good on the big day. CO 2 or erbium laser resurfacing, because the risks and downtime are unacceptable to my patients. Thread lifts (Aptos threads, Contour threads, etc) because of the risks, downtime and short duration of cosmetic benefit. Fat reduction lasers / freezers / ultrasound devices are improving but rates of patient satisfaction and value-for-money are still quite low Skin tightening treatments like Thermage / Liposonix / Ulthera are improving, but not quite ready for my patients. I do not sell a line of cosmetics to my patients because there is no one line of cosmetics which is uniformly superior to the others, and suitable for all patients. Over-the-counter creams that claim to treat medical conditions like rosacea are very likely to be a waste of your time and money. I do not sell packages of treatments to my patients, because there is quite a broad range in the number of treatments an individual will want or need to obtain a given result. In addition to that, sometimes a patient moves away from Niagara and could not easily come for treatment, or for some other reason decides not to continue with a particular treatment. I am on the faculty of many aesthetic meetings every year, and act as author or reviewer for a number of medical journals and textbooks.
