1 The Gospel According to David Book of Psalms Psalm 22 Psalms 22, 23, and 24 make up a trilogy called the Shepherd Psalms. In Psalm 22, Jesus is the Good Shepherd who died for the sheep. In Psalm 23, Jesus is the Great Shepherd who lives and cares for His sheep. And in Psalm 24, Jesus is the Chief Shepherd who will return and reward His sheep. Psalm 22 is a prophetical psalm, describing the crucifixion of Jesus in vivid detail about 1,000 years before it actually happened. It is remarkable that crucifixion was not a Jewish form of capital punishment, but a method of execution used in the Roman Empire. The Romans came to world power about 700 years after Psalm 22 was written. The Old Testament contains many pictures and prophecies of Christ. When Jesus appeared to His apostles after His resurrection, He reminded them of the truths prophesied about Him in the Old Testament scriptures. Luke 24:44 And he said unto them, These are the words which I spake unto you, while I was yet with you, that all things must be fulfilled, which were written in the law of Moses, and in the prophets, and in the psalms, concerning me. Jesus himself often quoted from the Book of Psalms. Almost everything that happened at the cross and most of Jesus' final words came directly from the Psalms. This psalm has been called the fifth gospel and the gospel according to David. 1. The record of Christ s agony (vs. 1-21) No one ever suffered like Jesus suffered. He suffered bodily, emotionally, and spiritually. Psalm 22 records more details of His crucifixion than any of the four Gospels. This psalm reads as if it were recorded by someone standing at the foot of the cross. We hear Christ s words. We understand His thoughts. We see His wounds. We feel the hatred of His enemies. A. Christ s separation (vs.1-5) This was the fourth saying of Jesus from the cross, and it was the first thing He said during three hours of darkness. Matthew 27:45 Now from the sixth hour there was darkness over all the land unto the ninth hour. The question of verse 1 is answered by verse 3. Jesus was abandoned because of the holiness of God. Jesus was perfectly holy. Only Jesus was able to say, I always do those things that please my Father. Only He was able to ask, Who of you convinces me of sin? Only He was able to hear the Father speak from Heaven, This is my beloved Son in whom I am well pleased. But something unique happened on the cross. The Bible says that Jesus took the sins of the world upon Himself and became our Sin-bearer. 2 Cor. 5:21 For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him. 1 Peter 2:24 Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed. According to Hebrews 2:9, Jesus tasted death for every man. The abandonment by God the Father was complete but not permanent. It ended before Jesus final words from the cross, Luke 23:46 And when Jesus had cried with a loud voice, he said, Father, into thy hands I commend my spirit: and having said thus, he gave up the ghost. B. Christ s scorn (vs.7-8) This describes the terrible mistreatment of our Savior. He was rejected, ridiculed, mocked, and insulted. Isaiah 53:3 He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and we hid as it
2 were our faces from him; he was despised, and we esteemed him not. Insults were hurled at him, claiming that He trusted on the Lord (vs. 8). Matthew 27: He trusted in God; let him deliver him now, if he will have him: for he said, I am the Son of God. 44 The thieves also, which were crucified with him, cast the same in his teeth. C. Christ s submission (vs. 9-11) He depended on the Father from His birth and throughout His earthly life. D. Christ s suffering (vs ) His life was surrounded (vs ) His enemies are described in three ways. They were like bulls... bulls of Bashan (vs. 12). Bashan was known for its big, strong cattle. They were like a ravening and a roaring lion (vs. 13). The lion was known as ferocious predator. They were like dogs (vs.16). These were not house pets, but mean and mangy wild dogs, like hyenas. His bones were dislocated (vs. 14) His strength was depleted (vs ) His body was dehydrated (vs. 15) His hands and feet were pierced (vs. 16) His body was exposed (vs. 17) While Jesus was dying for their sins, they were gambling for His clothes. His suffering meant nothing to them. There are many people in the world today like those calloused soldiers. Jesus suffering means nothing at all to them. E. Christ s supplication (vs ) He asked God to strengthen Him and to deliver Him. Jesus didn t ask God to deliver Him from the cross, but to bring Him through the suffering. He committed Himself totally to the Father. 2. The results of Christ s victory (vs ) This great psalm begins with suffering and ends with joy. There is a definite change of tone in verse 22. Jesus is no longer suffering. but He is alive and well. Christ has died for sin and salvation is now available and must be proclaimed to all people. A. Salvation is proclaimed to the Jews (vs ) The message was first proclaimed by the risen Lord Himself (vs. 22). He declared the Father s name to His brethren (vs. 22). We are God's children through our faith in Jesus, and He is not ashamed to claim us as brothers and sisters. Hebrews 2: For both he that sanctifieth and they who are sanctified are all of one: for which cause he is not ashamed to call them brethren, 12 Saying, I will declare thy name unto my brethren, in the midst of the church will I sing praise unto thee. Then the message was proclaimed by His disciples to the Jews (vs ). B. Salvation is proclaimed to the Gentiles (vs ) See Rom. 1:16. C. Salvation is proclaimed to all people (vs ) Future generations will serve the
3 Lord. Future generations will share the message of what God has done. The phrase that He hath done this is similar to what Jesus said on the cross, It is finished. POINTS TO PONDER: We can be forgiven because Christ was forsaken. Christians will never experience abandonment by God (Heb. 13:5). If God abandoned His own Son because of sin, will He not also abandon all who die in their sins? Matthew 7: Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven. 22 Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? 23 And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity. Jesus death is central to our worship, walk, and witness. Galatians 6:14 But God forbid that I should glory, save in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom the world is crucified unto me, and I unto the world. Galatians 2:20 I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me. 1 Corinthians 2:2 For I determined not to know any thing among you, save Jesus Christ, and him crucified.
