Carers Survey / We had a good response from the carers questionnaires that was sent out winter. I have summarised here the responses that have been collated from the questionnaire, this includes data about the person being cared for as well as the carer themselves. Part : About the person(s) you care for:. The number of people cared for? Most carers had the person they were caring for. > Number of patients being cared for by one individual. How old is the person being cared for? This shows that majority of the persons being cared for are elderly > Age range of person being cared for (years)
. Are they male or female? This graph shows a clear : ratio of men vs women. Male Female. Do they suffer with any of the following conditions? The most common medical problems needing a carer was having dementia and sight or hearing loss. These conditions will always require additional support and attention from carer and external sources. Medical problems. Where does the person you care for usually live? This shows that the person being cared for usually live at home with their carer, as often the carer is relative or friend. Total number of patients With me Within miles
. Has the person you care for had to attend hospital in an emergency in the last year? Most of our patients have not needed medical admission. 9. If the answer to the question above is yes, was this in any way to do with you not having the information or support you need? - needing child gate on door - better seizure control, is under neurologist This question was generally not answered other than the quotes as above.. Does the person you care for use the same GP practice? Most of our carers and the person being cared for are registered at the same practice. Yes No
Part : About you: The carer. Your gender? We have more female carers then male. Male Female. Your age? This shows that most of our carers are 9 years old. < > Age range (years). How many hours do you spend caring in total per week? A large number of time is dedicated by the carer each week for caring, this is likely the result of both carer and person cared for sharing the same residence. Total number of patients > 9-9 > Total number of hours per week
. How long would you say you were caring for before you saw yourself as a carer? Most of our carers recognised straight away that they had adopted this role Straight away < year - years Longer. What was it that first made you think of yourself as having a caring role? Friends and family was at the top of the list, followed by awareness at GP surgery. We plan to continue awareness by regularly updating our noticeboard.
. Do you consider yourself to have ongoing health problems of your own? Most of our carers are in reasonable good health. All carers have been offered a health check to ensure they remain in good health, but also provides an opportunity to screen for other medical / social problems too. Very good health Reasonably healthy Poor health. Do you consider yourself to have health problems? Most of our carers have health issues of their own; this may affect the quality of care they provide.
. Are there other problems that make your life difficult? The questionnaire highlights that in most cases it is difficult leaving the person you care for even if it s short while. Part : Our carers register:. Were you aware you were on the practices carers register? % of our carers were aware of the carers register. Since the questionnaire, carers have been updated by letters and also mentioned on our noticeboard to screen for unidentified carers. This aims to increase awareness of carers and encourages them to add their details to the register, so they can take advantage of carers health checks / flu vaccination and lots more.
. Do you feel it has helped you get the right support from the practice? Carers felt satisfied that they were receiving the correct support from our practice. Our current carers have all been signposted to external organisations for help and support in their role. Clinicians have access to referral forms for easy referral.. Do you feel the practice as a whole is keen to support carers? Large number of carers agreed that support was provided by the practice. We aim to create coffee events at the practice to encourage carers to come in and discuss issues they have. This is in progress.
. Do you feel the practice has skills it needs to support carers? Most of our carers were uncertain about this question, the most plausible answer to this is that they may not of needed help or support. 9 Part : Flu jab:. Have you been offered a flu jab because you are a carer? % of our carers were offered the flu jab via SMS / letter / opportunistically at appointments. It is vital that we have the correct contact details for carers / person cared for, so that they can be contacted. % of our carers are aged > years and above, these patients are invited for flu vaccination regardless of their caring role.
. Did you take up the offer? Most of our carers had their flu vaccinations. We also had a volunteer from Carers in Hertfordshire at our flu clinics to promote awareness of carers at the surgery. This event proved successful as our volunteer left with new referrals and provided support to current carers / persons being cared for. Yes No Part : Carers health check:. Have you been offered a carers health check? Most of our carers have been offered a health check.
. Did you take up the offer? From those who responded to the questionnaire, most had taken the opportunity to have a health check. Yes No. If yes, did you find the health check Most of our carers found the health check useful. Helpful Unhelpful Neither
Part : Carers noticeboard / information:. Does the surgery have a place where information for carers is clearly displayed? The noticeboard is displayed in the waiting area clear for all to see.. If yes, have you found the information helpful?. Does the practice offer flexible appointments for carers? This is clearly displayed on our noticeboard. Patients need to be on the carers register in order to take advantage.
. If yes, have you made use of the offer? Unfortunately no one has taken up the offer of flexible appointments. Part : Practice carers champion:. Do you know who the carers champion is who carers should speak too at the practice? Carers champion has been clearly displayed on noticeboard and website. Carers are also updated in the letters they receive too. 9. Have you ever spoken with them?
