1 Third Session: PETER & PAUL AND THE MISSIONARY ADVENTURE Feed my lambs. Tend my sheep When they had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, * Simon, son of John, do you love me more than these? He said to him, Yes, Lord, you know that I love you. He said to him, Feed my lambs. He then said to him a second time, Simon, son of John, do you love me? He said to him, Yes, Lord, you know that I love you. He said to him, Tend my sheep. He said to him the third time, Simon, son of John, do you love me? Peter was distressed that he had said to him a third time, Do you love me? and he said to him, Lord, you know everything; you know that I love you. [Jesus] said to him, Feed my sheep. Amen, amen, I say to you, when you were younger, you used to dress yourself and go where you wanted; but when you grow old, you will stretch out your hands, and someone else will dress you and lead you where you do not want to go. He said this signifying by what kind of death he would glorify God. And when he had said this, he said to him, Follow me. (JOHN 21:15-19) Christianity is centered on the Person of Jesus Christ. But, how would we know him and know about him without the witness of the apostles. Of great importance among these friends of Jesus are Peter, one of the Twelve, and Paul, called to be an apostle by the Risen Christ. If Christ has not been raised, your faith is vain. But if Christ is preached as raised from the dead, how can some among you say there is no resurrection of the dead? There is no resurrection of the dead, then neither has Christ been raised. And if Christ has not been raised, then empty [too] is our preaching; empty, too, your faith. Then we are also false witnesses to God, because we testified against God that he raised Christ, whom he did not raise if in fact the dead are not raised. For if the dead are not raised, neither has Christ been raised, and if Christ has not been raised, your faith is vain (1 COR 15:12-17a) Page 1 of 5

2 As Father Barron travels to Jerusalem, Rome and other lands where Paul preached, we will learn about his life and role in the Church. Paul, a well-traveled missionary, labored to gather all the nations to Christ and felt especially called to convert the Gentiles, or non- Jewish people. The focus of his preaching was the Resurrection of Jesus, and that focus is still the foundation of our faith today. Questions for Understanding: 1. The apostles went out to their known world. Why? What was their mission and motivation? 2. What was Peter s answer to Jesus question, Who do you say that I am? How is this different from the other answers? Where does Peter s knowledge and understanding of Jesus come from? 3. What was Peter s message in his sermon after Pentecost? 4. Why did Peter go to Rome? 5. What is Christianity based on? What does Peter have to do with this? Page 2 of 5

3 6. What was Saul s background and mission before his conversion? What happened to him at his conversion? 7. According to Father Barron, why did Paul retreat for three years between his conversion and his emergence into Christian mission? 8. Where did Paul go on his missionary journeys? 9. What did Paul preach about the Resurrection of Jesus? 10. What is participation in Christ? 11. Why does love endure in a way that faith and hope do not? Page 3 of 5

4 Questions for Application: 1. Think about who Peter was where he came from, his background, his weaknesses and strengths. What does Jesus call to Peter tell you about his call to you? To anyone? What does Jesus ask of those he invites to be his friends and disciples? 2. How do you see Peter s role in the early Church continued in the office of the Pope today? What was Peter s role and mission? What is the Pope s? 3. Paul encountered Jesus in a dramatic way. It changed his life. How has knowing Jesus and being a part of Jesus Body, the Church, changed your life? 4. Paul says that with faith in Jesus and his Resurrection, sin and death no longer have power over us. Think about how that happens in your life. What kinds of things have power over you? How could drawing closer to Jesus give those things less power? 5. In your life as a Christian, how do you participate in Christ? What prayers, activities and habits do you practice that bring you into the life of the Risen Christ? Page 4 of 5
