14 Top tips for parents How you can support your son/daughter Roles you may find yourself in include the following: Attendance officer make sure your child goes to school everyday and make the most out of all remaining lesson time. Partner with school and child attend parents evenings, discuss progress with subject teachers and review performance at each data snapshot and discuss strengths and areas for improvement. Provider of the tools for homework and revision a quiet space at home, a work box of pens, pencils, highlighters and other equipment. Banker paying for tools, folders and revision guides they will need. Sounding board and adviser helping your child break down tasks into manageable chunks, celebratory progress and challenging underperformance/lack of effort. Project manager agreeing rules for homework and revision (without these they may not work as hard as they need too!) Information provider finding copies of past paper examination papers, websites. Study buddy show an interest in the subject and where possible use material to question your child to help aid revision and make it more interactive. An active interest by parents is key to supporting success! 12

15 Stages of exam preparation Stage 1 Understanding the content first time around The process of revision (literally meaning to look at something again) assumes that the content of the subject has been learnt and understood in the first place. Attendance to all lessons is paramount and encouraging students to question when they are unsure is key to understanding. Stage 2 Revision Revision encourages student to re-visit work they have previously covered to help keep this knowledge fresh and in their memory ready for recall in the exam situation. Active revision, where students create something, e.g. mind maps, key cards, podcasts or posters, is more effective than just looking at or reading class notes. Stage 3 Application of knowledge to questions This involves students applying what they have learnt to exam questions. Practice questions and past papers along with the mark schemes are extremely valuable revision tools. Creating model answers is also very good practice. There are 3 skills required to sit an exam effectively: Knowing the content matter Organisational skills to ensure your time is managed successfully Exam technique to ensure you carefully read and fully understand the questions, offer answers to all questions and ensure you give sufficient breadth and detail in your answer to get all available marks. 13

17 Coping with stress throughout the year or during the exam period Tests and exams can be a challenging part of school life for students and parents. Not all stress is bad, as a little can help us feel motivated. However, when a situation feels overwhelming, or beyond your control, you can become distressed, which can be damaging to your physical and mental health. Watch out for exam stress and be aware of the signs Signs of stress can include being irritable, sleeping poorly, loss of appetite, worrying, feeling very negative, headaches and stomach aches. What can you do if you are feeling stressed? 1. Eat well A balanced diet is vital to health and feeling well. Avoid foods high in caffeine, fat or sugar which can leave you feeling hyperactive, irritable and moody. 2. Get enough sleep Most teenagers need 8-10 hours each night. Wind down before going to sleep and avoid late night cramming right before bed. 3. Get some exercise Exercise can boost energy levels, clear the mind and improve your mood. 4. Talk to someone about how you feel This can be a parent, family member, friend or teacher. 5. Make time for rest, other activities and hobbies This can help take your mind off the stress and help you feel refreshed. 6. Ask someone to help you with your revision Working with a friend or asking a parent to test you can add variety to your revision. 15
