3 About the UK Data Archive The UK Data Archive is the curator of the largest collection of digital data in the social sciences and humanities in the UK We have several thousand datasets relating to society The Archive is a vital resource for researchers, teachers and learners We are internationally acknowledged centre of expertise in the areas of acquiring, curating and providing access to data

4 About the UK Data Archive Since 2005 our archive has been designated a Place of Deposit by the National Archives allowing us to curate public records We acquire high quality data from the academic, public, and commercial sectors We provide continuous access to these data while we also support existing and emerging communities of data users

5 About the UK Data Service The UK Data Service is a comprehensive resource funded by the ESRC to support researchers, teachers and policymakers who depend on social and economic data Provides a unified point of access to the extensive range of social and economic data, including Census data, government-funded surveys, longitudinal studies, international macro data, qualitative data and business microdata It is designed to provide seamless access and support to meet the research demands of academic and non-academic users, and to help them maximise the impact of their work

6 About the UK Data Service Lead organisation in the network is the UK Data Archive Which is based at University of Essex, essentially as department The UK Data Service replaces the earlier ESRC investments of the Economic and Social Data Service (ESDS), the Secure Data Service (SDS), the Survey Question Bank and elements of the ESRC Census Programme.

11 Senior Research Data Management Officer Best practice approaches to achieve good data management and to make data shareable Data management is the organisation, documentation, storage, safeguarding, preservation and accessibility of data. This also includes the ethical and legal aspects of data handling and data ownership Data sharing is the release of data for use by others (in our context for research)
