7 OVERVIEW This booklet intoduces you to you COULTER FlowCente Multimedia Wokstation. The FlowCente Multimedia Wokstation is a dual-bootable Wokstation that includes: Micosoft Windows 98, second edition (WIN 98 SE) opeating system. Micosoft MS-DOS 6.22 (DOS) opeating system. You FlowCente Multimedia Wokstation is configued to un COULTER EPICS XL Flow Cytomete SYSTEM II softwae, COULTER EPICS ALTRA softwae, o COULTER EPICS Elite softwae. The FlowCente Multimedia Wokstation can also use EXPO32 o EXPO32 ADC Cytomete softwae which, if installed, povides the solution to you data acquisition and analysis equiements in the Windows opeating system. Windows 98 SE has multi-tasking capabilities that let you acquie data and pint expeiment epots in the backgound, while simultaneously woking in anothe application. The esult is an incease in poductivity and ceativity fo data epoting, analysis and pesentations. The Windows envionment offes all the editing and online help tools that ae familia to you. 9 STARTING ALTRA OR ELITE SOFTWARE NOTES ON WORKING WITH ALTRA OR ELITE SOFTWARE AND WINDOWS 98 SE The ALTRA and Elite softwae have been validated to opeate in the MS-DOS opeating system only. Theefoe the softwae must opeate fom the MS-DOS opeating system and it cannot opeate in a Windows 98 SE envionment o an MS-DOS window fom Windows 98 SE. Do not launch ALTRA o Elite softwae fom an icon on the WIN 98 SE Desktop o fom the WIN 98 SE MS-DOS pompt. Duing system statup, the WIN 98 SE Statup Menu appeas. The menu displays 8 choices fo stating the opeating system including, 8. Pevious vesion of MS-DOS, (ALTRA o Elite softwae) and 1. Nomal, (WIN 98 SE opeating system). If you do not make a selection within 90 seconds, the system automatically stats WIN 98 SE. STARTING ALTRA OR ELITE SOFTWARE To stat ALTRA o Elite softwae, at the WIN 98 SE Statup Menu, pess 8 and then pess Û to select option 8. Pevious vesion of MS-DOS duing system bootup. The Cytomete emains on. To etun to the WIN 98 SE opeating system, eboot the Wokstation (pess Ý+ Þ + á) and select option 1. To tun off the Cytomete and compute, tun off the main powe switch on the Cytomete. 3

10 STARTING ALTRA OR ELITE SOFTWARE RESTARTING ALTRA OR ELITE SOFTWARE FROM MS-DOS RESTARTING ALTRA OR ELITE SOFTWARE FROM MS-DOS To etun to the ALTRA o Elite softwae fom the MS-DOS opeating system, type CYTOMETE and pess Û at the C:\ALTRA> o C:\ELITE> pompt. Note: See the appopiate instument poduct manual fo the location of the powe switches. 4

11 STARTING XL/XL-MCL SYSTEM II SOFTWARE FROM THE STARTUP MENU NOTES ON WORKING WITH XL/XL-MCL SYSTEM II SOFTWARE AND WINDOWS 98 SE The XL/XL-MCL SYSTEM II softwae has been validated to opeate in the MS-DOS opeating system only. Theefoe, the softwae must opeate fom the MS-DOS opeating system and it cannot opeate in a Windows 98 SE envionment o an MS-DOS window fom Windows 98 SE. You Beckman Coulte Repesentative can install two XL SYSTEM II softwae icons on the WIN 98 SE desktop of you FlowCente Wokstation which can easily link to the MS-DOS opeating system and launch the SYSTEM II softwae. Note: If you Beckman Coulte Repesentative has aleady installed these two XL SYSTEM II softwae icons on the WIN 98 SE desktop of you FlowCente Wokstation, use the instuctions located in the next section: STARTING XL/XL-MCL SYSTEM II SOFTWARE FROM AN ICON. Use the instuctions in this section if you FlowCente Wokstation does not have the XL SYSTEM II softwae icons installed on the WIN 98 SE desktop. Duing system statup, the WIN 98 SE Statup Menu appeas. EXITING TO MS-DOS FROM SYSTEM II SOFTWARE Select Exit fom the Applications Menu to tun off the SYSTEM II softwae and ente the MS-DOS opeating system. (See the MS-DOS manuals fo moe infomation on the MS-DOS opeating system). The Cytomete emains on. To tun off the Cytomete, type XL OFF and pess Û at the C:\XL> pompt. To etun to WIN 98 SE, eboot the Wokstation and select option 1. Nomal. RESTARTING XL/XL-MCL SYSTEM II SOFTWARE FROM MS-DOS Type XL2 at the C:\XL > pompt and pess Û to etun to the SYSTEM II softwae fom the MS-DOS opeating system. Note: If the Cytomete is off, estating the softwae tuns the Cytomete back on if the estat featue has been pogammed. To pogam this estat featue, go to the SYSTEM II softwae: 1. Select the Utilities Application. 2. Select the Utilities Configuation sceen. 3. Select ON in the Powe field of the Stat Up section of the Utilities Configuation sceen. ScanDisk can be configued to automatically epai any eos it finds. Refe to the WIN 98 SE help system fo infomation on how to configue ScanDisk. To use Defag, follow these steps in WIN 98 SE: 1 Select Stat tt Pogams tt Accessoies tt System Tools tt Disk Defagmente D 2 Follow the instuctions on the sceen A DRIVESPACE: Using DRIVESPACE is NOT RECOMMENDED on the FlowCente Wokstation. MEMMAKER The DOS MemMake pogam optimizes system memoy and fees conventional memoy fo use by applications. If you add any memoy esident pogams o peipheals that use DOS 12

ARCHIVING DATA Do not use XL SYSTEM II, ALTRA, o Elite softwae to achive data to the optional ecodable CD-ROM dive. Files must be achived to the ecodable CD-ROM dive in WIN 98 SE, using the achiving softwae that came with the dive. CHANGING WIN 98 SE STARTUP MENU CRITERIA Note: Do not pefom this pocedue unless you ae familia with woking with files. You might need to change these settings back to thei oiginal state to toubleshoot poblems. The WIN 98 SE Statup menu is contolled by a file named C:\MSDOS.SYS. Using an editing softwae application such as Notepad fo Windows, you can change the default menu item selection and the time allowed to make the selection. 1 Open the C:\MSDOS.SYS file. 2 Look fo the section of the file stating with [Options] as shown to the ight. 3 Make any of the changes listed below to change the WIN 98 SE Statup menu citeia to meet you needs: Boot Menu = 1. Change the 1 to 0 to suppess the WIN 98 SE Statup menu. Boot Menu Delay = 90. Change the 90 to anothe value to change the numbe of seconds the system waits fo you enty at the WIN 98 SE Statup menu befoe it automatically stats the default selection. Boot Menu Default = 8. Change the 8 to the numbe of the option listed on the WIN 98 SE Statup menu (1-8) that you want to use as the default selection.
