2 NEW TEACHER SUPPORT HISTORY 1: New Social Studies Teacher Institute: SD# SD M60 Honing in on Instructional Strategies & Teaching Opportunities in Readying for Year 1. The HISTORY 1 series was specifically designed with the new Social Studies teacher in mind. This is for teachers in their first year of teaching Social Studies. We will meet four times a year and engage in interactive activities that will support: Data Driven Instruction, Vocabulary strategies, Writing in Social Studies, student engagement, working with ELL strategies, STAAR focused strategies, using primary sources for in depth learning, and TEKS analysis. This is for Secondary Social Studies Teachers grades Participants must attend all training dates. 3 SEPTEMBER 2015 Understanding Mother Earth and It s Inhabitants Let s make mountains move! Social Studies and Science have a lot in common. Join us for a fun learning day and discover the impact of the relationships between earth science and its inhabitants. Connecting Science and Social Studies and using your time effectively while making learning more engaging, it s a win, win! This session is designed for grades 3 5. September 22, 2015 SD M60 Fee: $100 Instructional Strategies in Social Studies for Students with Disabilities Explore content, instruction, and assessment strategies to address the nature and needs of students with disabilities in the Social Studies classroom. Analyze the Social Studies TEKS and discover ways to differentiate instruction, allowing access and success for all students. Instructors will model a lesson allowing for the take away of numerous examples and ideas that can be implemented immediately. This will be a hands on sessions introducing new ways to utilize and implement instructional technology. ipads will be provided for applicable portions of the session; however participants are free to bring their own devices if preferred. September 24, 2015 PD A09 Fee: $50 The American History Challenge: Helping Teach the Tougher TEKS (8th Grade) In this two-day, 12-hour institute, the Law-Related Education (LRE) team identified TEKS objectives that are challenging to American History students. Working with scholars and consultants, participants will learn and receive valuable methods and resources. Content presentations are reinforced with practical activities which will be made available to participants on a flash drive. This institute is designed to target the low performing 8th grade TEKS and to complement your existing curriculum. You ve got to send your 8th grade teachers to this one!!! September 30 October 1, 2015 SD M60 Fee: $25 (one fee for 2 days) OCTOBER 2015 Incorporating Process Skills in Social Studies Based on the need to ensure teachers are embedding the process skills in efforts to strengthen instruction and on the work of Heidi Hayes Jacobs in Interdisciplinary curriculum, as well as Robert Marzano s work for effective instruction, we have designed a training to ease the implementation of the Social Studies process skills. STAAR has shed the light on the importance of teaching the Social Studies process skills. Join us and learn how to easily implement the process skills through best practices, children s books, and hands on activities. Participants will be given a process that will help them develop a lesson incorporating the process skills and deepening the content using interdisciplinary skills. October 6, 2015 SD M60 Fee: $100 3
4 Bringing Your History Class into the 21st Century Join us to gain hands-on experience on a variety of technology resources to enrich your US History classroom. From internet resources to Discovery Education, Google Earth and educational apps, you will leave this day with many practical tools to bring your classroom instruction and student projects into the 21st Century. Please bring your own devices. Scientific-based research: 21st Century skills are critical to ensure 21st Century readiness for every student (Partnership for 21st Century Skills; October 8, 2015 SD M60 Fee: $100 Social Studies and the English Language Learner Participants will learn about how the ELL benefits from a sheltered instruction approach in the secondary Social Studies classroom. Implementation of the TEKS and ELPs will be modeled and discussed. This training offers specific strategies for Social Studies teachers to use in meeting the linguistic, cognitive and effective needs of ELLs; thus, resulting in an increased comprehension of Social Studies content. In addition, participants will have the opportunity to practice implementing strategies learned by creating their own grade level lesson. This lesson model is designed for Secondary. Laptops and grade level TEKS are recommended. October 14, 2015 SD M60 Fee: $100 TAGE: Teaching Social Studies with Digital Maps In this workshop you will learn ways to use digital maps to integrate technology into your classroom. Utilizing ArcGIS Online, with a focus on Story Maps, we will guide you through the creation and use of digital maps relevant to geography content and social studies skills TEKS in Economics, Geography, Government, U.S. History, and World History courses. Story Maps combine(s) interactive maps and multimedia content into elegant user experiences. They make it easy for you to harness the power of maps to tell your stories. At the end of this workshop, you will: be able to use ArcGIS Online to explore and create digital maps have strategies and understand how to incorporate digital maps into your classroom receive access to resources, including lesson plans and activities 4 Audience: Resources are created for high school students and teachers but applicable to all grades. This is a BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) workshop. Please bring laptops, tablets, and/or phones. October 15, 2015 SD M61 Fee: $25 Activating Thinking in Social Studies Come learn how to scaffold questions and activities according to Bloom s Taxonomy that will get you and your students critically thinking! Bring your current or difficult TEKS to utilize as you learn to activate thinking using our Social Studies process skills. This session is designed for grades A laptop and your grade level TEKS are needed. Critical Success Factors 1 7 October 22, 2015 SD# M60 Fee: $100 It Makes Cents: Math PFLs & the Social Studies Economic Strand Wondering how you can get time back? Wondering how Social Studies and Math support each other and how you ll teach it all? This session is designed for K-2 Math and Social Studies teachers. Teachers will learn the connection between the Social Studies economic standards and the Math Personal Financial Literacy standards. Teachers will walk away with a deeper understanding of these standards, as well as how to integrate curriculum across the two content areas. Time will be provided for K-2 team alignment so be sure to send at least one grade level member of your K-2 team! October 27, 2015 SD M60 NOVEMBER 2015 Revving Review for 8th Grade STAAR Day 1 You guys love them! Join us for S3 Strategies and their Revving Review for STAAR Success in 8th grade Day 1. We are only offering this one session of 8th grade Day 1. Presenters from S3 Strategies will share their TEKS-based strategies for facilitating a review session with students. A link to download materials will also be provided to participants. These are strategies that can be used all year! We are considering bringing Day 2 in the Spring. November 2, 2015 SD M60 Fee: $125
5 Revving Review for 11th grade EOC STAAR Day 2 This is a follow up to the US High School EOC Success session. Day 1 not a prerequisite however this Day 2 session features additional and new review activities from Day 1. These strategies help tackle problematic Tier II vocabulary and powerful test taking strategies to equip students for success. Additionally, you ll learn how to make the most of your Day 1 materials. November 3, 2015 SD M60 Fee: $125 Echoes & Reflections: Connecting Students to the Past with Primary Sources and Human Stories Echoes and Reflections is a comprehensive Holocaust education program that delivers professional development and a rich array of resources for middle and high school teachers. Echoes and Reflections prepares educators to teach about the Holocaust in a way that stimulates engagement and critical thinking while providing opportunities for students to see the relevance of this complex history to their own lives. Extensive primary and secondary source materials aligned with modular, interdisciplinary lessons help students understand what happened, why it happened, and how it relates to difficult issues they face today. Plus every participant receives a free, comprehensive Teacher s Resource Guide. Teacherfriendly materials address Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) and incorporate a mix of instructional strategies and technologies for use in 21st century classrooms. This training is perfect for 6th & 7th grade, and World History and U.S. History teachers. This institute is designed to target low performing 11th grade TEKS and to complement existing curriculum. December 1 2, 2015 SD M60 8:30 a.m. 3:30pm Fee: $25 (one fee, two days) Increasing Vocabulary in Secondary Social Studies Teachers will learn how structured instruction in (Social Studies) subject-specific vocabulary can help with background knowledge so that student comprehension and achievement increases. This workshop is based off of Marzano s books Building Background Knowledge and Building Academic Vocabulary. It is specific to Middle School and High School Social Studies grade levels. Teachers will leave with strategies they can easily implement in their classrooms. December 8, 2015 SD M60 5

Teachers will learn how to build engaging lessons through the gradual release model that incorporates hands-on activities and text analysis. If building capacity across the ELAR and Social Studies content areas is your focus, then bring your Social Studies and ELAR team! This workshop is for you.
