1 S H E P H E R D Society for Human Equality People s Health, Education & Rural Development 97 Ayyanar Colony, Thankkankulam, Madurai Ph: , Mobile: Annual Report Introduction: SHEPHERD is a non-profitable, non-political, secular and voluntary organization founded for the development of the socially economically backward people. Our organization commenced its activities from 2 nd October 1989, i.e., on birth anniversary date of Mahathma Ghandhi (Father of our nation). It has become a registered society only on 16 th February 1990 under the Tamilnadu Societies Registration Act Self Help Groups: Fifty self-help groups of women were started in the Madurai East block in 1996 with the help of Tamil Nadu Women s Development Corporation in collaboration with the International Fund for Agricultural Development [IFAD] to offer training, to motivate their saving skills and sanctioning small scale loans. The above scheme was later expanded under the title Tamil Nadu Government Project for Women, (MAHALIR THITTAM) and it was implemented in our servicing area Thirupparankundram block.
2 -2- SHEPHERD, in collaboration with the Tamilnadu Government Women Development Corporation, has coordinated the women who are under the poverty line in Madurai East Block, Thirupparankundram Block & T.Kalluppatty, and has formed women Self Help Groups. Animators and Representatives from 78 SHG participated in the exclusive training programmes conducted by SHEPHERD. And Skill oriented training programmes were conducted for 56 SHGs. Terracotta training, Textile Training, Sepals making, Organic farming training, Family Planning, AIDS awareness programmes were also conducted this year. We have been giving training to women on savings, procedures in getting small, medium and business loans, women welfare schemes and the rights of the women, besides SHEPHERD through the nationalized banks has been giving such loans to these women as revolving loan, economical assistance, business loan, crop loan, educational loan and loans for purchasing domestic articles etc. With the help of Rashtriaya Mahila Kosh scheme, 40 SHGs in Thirupparankundram block, 22 SHGs in Madurai East block and 2 SHGs in Chellampatti block obtained micro credits. As many as 1079 women members have benefited. The following Job oriented programmes had been conducted for the welfare of the Self Help Group members in Two Wheeler Training, Four Wheeler Training, Beautician Course, Food Processing, Toy Making, Catering Technology, Bakery, File Preparing and Shoe Making. Only in certain need based applications, follow-up training programmes were conducted in this year.

Women activists, members of Women Development Corporation, participated in the programme and spoke on women s rights, female infanticide, abduction of female children, rape, etc. Counseling on legal action, awareness on other related issues were also addressed. Financial support to Entrepreneurs: Three staff members of our organization have participated in 5-Days Training programme from onwards conducted by National Bank for Agricultural and Rural Development (NABARD), at the venue of Association for Rural Development (ARD), Kandai, Thirumangalam, Madurai 6, to promote entrepreneurship training, Skill Development programme, Aiding financial assistance to Self Help Group members.
9 -9- For this year, 1,500 women (12 members from 125 SHGs) have undergone Animator and Representative Training with the support of Entrepreneur Trainer. Nearly, 83 women are administrating small manufacturing units like mushroom cultivation, goat rearing and doing small business rice flour making, cosmetic items, snacks preparation, preparing and selling Ginger coffee, Chicken shops, candle preparation, etc. 4. Programmes promoting Education: In our targeted area covering 15 panchayath, there are 10 Primary Schools and 5 High Schools. Through our Self Help Training programme, we stressed the importance of primary education among the poor and tried to completely stop the school drop outs. We also arranged financial assistance to economically poor students towards payment of fees. We have also recommended the deserving poor students to avail hostel facilities at Boys Town Hostel, Madurai. 5. Community Health Care Programme: The Hand-washing day was observed on in nearby 10 Panchayath primary Schools. 20 Cane of soap oil was distributed to those schools and demonstrated hand washing. There was a wide spread Dengue fever in Madurai District. There were 5 reported cases in the primary Health Centre at Thirupparankundram block. Among the 5 affected persons, only 4 lives were saved. Our organization prepared and advocated an herbal medicine, popularly known as Nela Vembu Kashayam to the infected persons at the earlier stage so as to save the lives.
10 -10- We also demonstrated the preparation of the herbal medicine in an awareness programme within the campus of Madurai Kamaraj University, in which 380 members were participated. As many as 63 Self Help Group organizers attended awareness programme conducted by MADITSIA. Two of our Staff members who attended the above programme, imparted awareness programme to other SHG members about the Dengue fever, with the support of staff members of Thiruppankundram panchayat Union office. With the support of District Rural Development Agency, we also propagated the common public of 9 villages of Madurai East & 13 villages of Thirupparankundram block, to approach the Hygienic & Health Care Centre. We also recommended the villagers to advocate polio drops to their wards for this year also with the support of nearby Primary Health Centres. 6. Relief and Rehabilitation of physically challenged Persons: As many as 27 physically challenged persons, with the help of our organization, were able to get financial assistance from the office of the Madurai District Collector. It is to be noted that 2 members are administrating cell phone service units, 2 members are having rice shops, one member is supplying mineral water in nearby place and one member is running a grocery shop in Thirupparankundram Block. One physically challenged person who is able to design shoes has provided job opportunity 3 physically challenged persons in his shoe mart.
11 Women s Day: In Madurai, the District level Women s Day celebration was observed on 6 th Mar 13, 7 th Mar 13 & 8 th Mar 13. Medical Camps, Grievance Day, Women s Rally were exclusively held for promoting welfare of women. The Superintendent of Police presided over the function. In the Programme, as many as 82 members from SHEPHERD participated. 8. Organic Agriculture programme: In more than 10 panchayath villages in Thirupparankundram block, follow-up procedures with regard to organic agriculture forming activities were successfully carried out with the support of students of Madurai Institute of Social Science College and Mannar Thirumalai Nackar College. 9.
