The Power of an Anointed Word
Hebrews 5: Who in the days of his flesh, when he had offered up prayers and supplications with strong crying and tears unto him that was able to save him from death, and was heard in that he feared; 8 Though he were a Son, yet learned he obedience by the things which he suffered; 9 And being made perfect, he became the author of eternal salvation unto all them that obey him; 10 Called of God an high priest after the order of Melchisedec.
Hebrews 5: Of whom we have many things to say, and hard to be uttered, seeing ye are dull of hearing. 12 For when for the time ye ought to be teachers, ye have need that one teach you again which be the first principles of the oracles of God; and are become such as have need of milk, and not of strong meat. 13 For every one that useth milk is unskilful in the word of righteousness: for he is a babe. 14 But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.
The bible gives us a clear glimpse of what it took for Jesus to be successful in His fleshly ministry here on earth. The bible makes it clear that Jesus Himself was not exempt from submitting to the laws and principles of God s word. Jesus had to abide by the laws that He created, and this is seen in the text that we have read today. Even though Jesus was the son of God, it is clear that He had to suffer in obedience to the word of God in order to accomplish His purpose as a man.
It was His commitment to the word that allowed Him to do what was necessary, rather than opt to take a easier way out of life. He learned obedience and that He who was perfect from sin still had to be perfected by the word of God. It was Jesus openness to hear and receive the word that contributed to His continued growth and maturity.
The true purpose of the word of God is to give us what we need to grow up and mature. The purpose of the word is not to make us feel good, or to give us some false sense of righteousness, but a genuine opportunity for growth. Hebrews says that those who are hard of hearing and receiving the word will never grow to maturity. A true sign of growth in the life of the believer is to be able to teach and model the kingdom to those who are ignorant of the power of the word of God.
The writer of Hebrews argues that those who should be teaching are incapable because they lack the ability to receive God s word. They heard it, but it didn t take root; they heard it, but they didn t apply it; they heard it, but the ground upon which the seed fell was hard and not receptive. The true sign of a mature Christian is not the gifts of the spirit, nor is it miracles, signs, and wonders, but it is his or her ability to impart and share with others.
Hebrews 4: For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. 13 Neither is there any creature that is not manifest in His sight: but all things are naked and opened unto the eyes of Him with whom we have to do.
The word alone is capable of doing the impossible in a person s life. People will try to substitute the word with other things that they believe will cause them to benefit. It is not that other things, such as therapy, self-help books, etc., won t help, but they alone do not have the ability of the transforming power of God s word. Ultimately, even people at their best don t have the answers; they will lie to you, and, worst of all, they will lie to themselves, but the word of God reveals the very thoughts and intents of one s heart.
Jesus declares that the people s hearts are dull, their ears are dull of hearing, their eyes are closed; then the revelation of God s word cannot penetrate their lives for real change. It is never that the word does not possess the power; it is that people don t possess the soul and heart that allows the word to produce what it should produce. If the word of God does not change one s life, then there is nothing that can bring about that change.
Matthew 13: For this people's heart is waxed gross, and their ears are dull of hearing, and their eyes they have closed; lest at any time they should see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and should understand with their heart, and should be converted, and I should heal them. 16 But blessed are your eyes, for they see: and your ears, for they hear. When people are disobedient, the word will not change their lives; people who have bad motives cannot receive the word; people who don t have faith will not benefit from the word of God.
Luke 4: The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because He hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; He hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised, 19 To preach the acceptable year of the Lord. 20 And He closed the book, and He gave it again to the minister, and sat down. And the eyes of all them that were in the synagogue were fastened on Him.
