5 COURSE INFORMATION Initiator: Ken Kramer, Frank Port Date of proposal to Curriculum Sub-Committee: August 9, 2012 Effective Semester/Year Fall 2013 Prefix & Number: HVA 150 Full Title: Refrigeration Electrical Troubleshooting Short Title: Electrical Troubleshooting Catalog Course Description: Covers AC theory as it applies to refrigeration systems, including transformers, capacitors, the various types of motors used in refrigeration equipment, safety, and the use of appropriate test equipment. Troubleshooting techniques for motor and motor control problems, as well as troubleshooting control circuits, and electrical malfunctions related to mechanical refrigeration systems will be covered and practiced. Energy efficient controls and components will also be discussed. Use the necessary tools and procedures to measure and calculate electrical values in an HVAC or 2. Describe the most common type of control and safety devices and then describe how each device is utilized to monitor or control an HVAC or 3. Describe the various types of motors utilized in an HVAC or 4. Recognize the various electrical and component symbols used on a wiring diagram and how to use that wiring diagram to diagnose the electrical side of an HVAC or 5. Diagnose the various types of control, safety, and operational electrical components of an HVAC or 6. Replace various electrical components of an HVAC or

6 Course Competencies and Objectives By the end of the semester, students will be able to: Competency 1 Discuss the application of basic electrical concepts to refrigeration systems. Objective 1.1 Describe the characteristics of good conductors. Objective 1.2 Compare and contrast alternative current and direct current and provide an example of how each is used in refrigeration systems. Objective 1.3 Discuss and demonstrate how units of measurements for electricity are utilized in refrigeration systems, and demonstrate the correct procedures for making accurate electrical measurements. Objective 1.4 Describe the construction and function of a capacitor. Objective 1.5 Discuss and analyze the impact of wire sizes on the application. Objective 1.6 Describe inductance and how a power transformer is used for inductance. Objective 1.7 Describe the safety precautions that should be exercised when servicing refrigeration equipment. Competency 2 Demonstrate basic procedures for troubleshooting basic and complex circuits, thermostats, and circuits controlled by thermostats. Objective 2.1 Describe and identify power- and non-power consuming devices within refrigeration systems. Objective 2.2 Describe and demonstrate the use of a voltmeter in troubleshooting electrical circuits. Objective 4.1 Describe the different types of open single-phase motors used to drive fans, compressors, and pumps. Objective 4.2 Describe the use of split-phase and permanent split capacitors. Objective 4.3 List the motor classifications that provide high starting torque.

Objective 4.5 Describe a multispeed PSC motor and analyze how the different speeds are obtained. Objective 4.6 Discuss the operation of a three-phase motor, and describe their application. Objective 4.7 Identify the type of motor used for a hermetic compressor, and analyze its advantages. Objective 4.8 Describe the motor terminal connections in various compressors, and demonstrate how to connect these devices. Objective 4.9 Describe the different types of compressors that use hermetic motors. Objective 4.10 Discuss the appropriate applications for variable-speed motors, and analyze their advantages Competency 5 Identify, describe, and analyze the ways in which motors are utilized in refrigeration and HVAC systems, including their electrical and mechanical specifications. Objective 6.4 Compare two methods used for external motor overload protection. Objective 6.5 Describe the steps necessary to troubleshoot conditions that must be corrected prior to resetting safety devices, in order to restart electric motors. Objective 6.6 Demonstrate the proper safety procedures when replacing or servicing line voltage components, in order to avoid personal injury and component damage. Competency 7 Demonstrate the procedures used to troubleshoot the mechanical and electrical functions of a motor in a refrigeration or HVAC system.
