1 P.E Unit 1 Exam Exam Focus Extended Writing for 6-mark Questions
2 Before I start the exam. General Points to Consider Read the front cover/instructions: How long is the exam? How many marks is it worth? Which questions do I answer? Use a highlighter for key words in the questions AND to highlight links between the questions. How do I answer the multiple choice section? Always make a choice, do not leave a question out. 16 Here s what a good one looks like: Firstly, the features of circuit training are the use of stations, following activities in a circular order, with a set number of reps/circuits, monitoring heart rate and time and using different muscle groups. It should include a variety of different exercises which cater for large groups and different size spaces, which can take place even with limited equipment. The activities can be aerobic or anaerobic. There are a number of health benefits which include This is beneficial because.. Also,..this leads to improved health because.. A healthy lifestyle is vital as... In addition to this, there will be an improvement in fitness. This is a benefit because.. Fitness is important because... Furthermore, I believe that personal confidence will be improved if health and fitness are focused on. For example, if your body and mind are in shape then you automatically feel more positive, not just about the way you look but also in how you feel emotionally and how you present yourself. Also,...
17 Why is this good? This has a structure: there are four paragraphs in this answer because the question gives us four bullet points to respond to; The paragraphs are developed and sustained; they re more than one or two lines long and they go into detail. The SPaG is accurate; It uses addition connectives (In addition, Also, Furthermore etc) to sequence the paragraphs.

Here s the first bullet point from the question: Features of circuit training As an examiner, I ve got a good first impression because I know the first paragraph is responding to the first bullet point.

20 Hinge Point 2: How many marks would this achieve and why? Another example here Elicit from pupils why it achieved the mark it did. Possible use of progress table here: If you can recognise what a bad answer is, you know the criteria for a good one and know what a good one looks like, then I m expecting you to produce a good one too etc
21 What s the answer? This achieved 2 marks. Why? No paragraphs. This pupil hasn t written a paragraph in response to each bullet point; They ve not written about bullet points 2, 3 or 4 so how are they going to get anywhere near 6 marks? SPaG is poor. Use of full stops is inaccurate, use of apostrophes is inaccurate and expression is unclear; No use of addition connectives to structure the work; They ve written nowhere near enough.

This is an actual pupil answer from your year group which has been typed up exactly as written. one of the features of Circuit training is you are able to set it up in the order of the sports you do and the different things you can improve in the sport you take part in. It is able to improve your health so your heart gets use to the different things you do in that sport. this will improve your fitness because it will make you keep your body toned and keep your fitness up. with circuit training you are able to do it on a daily basis and it will help improve your fitness and health

However: SPaG is totally inaccurate; The paragraphs lack any depth and actually tell us nothing at all in answer to the question; No use of addition connectives to sequence paragraphs; This is a really poor answer.

28 What a good one looks like There are many ways to reduce the likelihood of an injury in football. Football is a very physically demanding sport, warming up and cooling down properly before a session or a game ensures that the muscles are prepared and therefore the player is less likely to strain or tear a muscle. Firstly, correct clothing and equipment are important, especially the use of football boots and shin pads. Football boots protect the foot and prevents soft tissue damage and bruising from opponents during tackles. In addition to this, they also prevent the player from going over on their ankle and therefore reduce the risk of a sprain or torn ligaments in the ankle joint. Due to the studs, football boots also reduce the likelihood of the player slipping and falling which in turn limits the risks of soft tissue damage to the knees, hands and elbows. Furthermore, balanced competition is another important measure to reduce the chance of injury. By playing in leagues, separate sex and age specific groups ensures players are evenly matched in terms of capability, size and maturity. Balanced competition ensures the competition is even and reduces the chance of smaller, younger players being knocked over by stronger, older players reducing the chance of yet again soft tissue injuries such as bruising or grazes. Also, rules are in place in football to ensure the safety of each player. Players are not allowed to tackle with two feet as this is deemed as extremely unsafe and could cause injuries such as broken bones or fractures in the legs and ankles. Players are not allowed to tackle with studs up as they could cause damage to the opponents legs; bruising or open wounds. Finally, there is a referee and linesmen to ensure the rules are adhered to and etiquette maintained to reduce the risk of injury.
29 Why is this a good answer? First impressions are good: the length, paragraphs and sentence starters. SPaG is accurate. It uses addition connectives to create and support the structure. It answers the question in detail with relevant references which show a detailed knowledge.
30 Another good one Same question physical activity -Boxing Boxing is a contact sport in which the aim is to punch your opponent to gain points. It is therefore essential that any competition between boxers is fair to avoid the possibility of injury. Firstly, one way to reduce injury is through the use of protective equipment. A boxer should wear a gum shield to protect their teeth against heavy punches. Additionally, they wear gloves and hand wraps to protect their fingers and knuckles from possible hand bone fractures. A padded belt is worn around their waist to protect their internal organs from possible low punches. Moreover, boxers always compete in balanced competitions where competitors of a similar weight fight against each other e.g. flyweight, heavyweight. If this did not happen, it would be extremely unfair to the smaller boxer who would have an increased chance of being knocked unconscious. Finally, a referee is always present to ensure that rules are adhered to keep the competitors safe e.g. no biting or head butts which could cause cuts and bruises.
31 Final response Again football is the chosen sport Football is a very physical game using both cardiovascular fitness and anaerobic fitness. For this reason, a warm up is essential to prevent any strains of muscles or ligaments. Such a warm up might include raising of pulse rate initially, then stretching and finally, skills so a participant would be mentally prepared to play. Furthermore, using the correct equipment would also be a priority. Footwear e.g football boots are very important, so you won t slip over and twist an ankle, but studs would have to be checked for safety as these could cause soft tissue injuries. Shin pads would also prevent such injuries but also more chronic injuries such as fractures. To conclude, whilst playing the game I would also ensure there is a match official who could implement all of the appropriate laws of the game. This provides equality and makes the game fair. It also ensures the protection of the players from bad tackles and fighting which could result in black eyes, cuts and bruises.
