2 QANU Research Assessment of Communication Research in 2008 well as the number of discipline codes for communication research is improved. Research assessments are carried out by Qanu ( Quality Assurance Netherlands Universities, see ), formerly this was done by the VSNU. Communication science research in the Netherlands will be assessed in University Boards/Faculty Deans may choose to participate in the Qanu-assessments, or to organize assessments in a different manner. In the Qanu assessment of communication research 2008, the University of Amsterdam, the University of Twente, and the Free University Amsterdam are likely to participate. Please mind that the Qanu assessment is different from the KNAW assessments of Dutch national research schools. KNAW accredits national research schools, and NESCoR was accredited in 2000, and reaccredited in Qanu assessments on the other hand concern the evaluation of research groups and institutes at the local level. The 2008 QANU assessment will hence concern the communication science research at the Free University Amsterdam, University of Amsterdam, and University of Twente. Currently open for applications at NWO: Cultural dynamics and Open Competition Cultural dynamics The focus of the research program in Cultural Dynamics lies in the formation of cultural heritage as a dynamic, societal process that is crucial for the (re)defining of identities of individuals, groups and nations. An understanding of that complex process of cultural heritage formation in the Western and non-western world makes an important contribution to solving problems related to social cohesion. Main themes in the program are citizenship and identity; canon formation; creative design and innovation; intermediality; and popular culture. Applications can be submitted by senior researchers and apply for PhD projects, postdoctoral project, and replacement subsidies. Deadline: May 21. See: NWOA_6Z3E5Y_Eng NWO-MaGW Open Competition The NWO-MaGW Open Competition is open for applications for PhD and Postdoctoral positions. NWO-MaGW discipline codes When submitting an application to NWO, a discipline code needs to be filled in that is subsequently used by NWO to among others select reviewers. The discipline codes entertained for communication research are very few and undifferentiated, compared to other social and behavioural science disciplines. Mind that the deadline for the Open Competition is a continuous one, but will close when a maximum of 200 applications has been reached in Per early May, the nr. of applications so far is 95. See further: NWOA_4XLBT7_Eng?Opendocument NESCoR has submitted a proposal to the NWO-MaGW board in which the structure as NESCoR Newsletter , p. 2
