1 CITY & GUILDS TECHBAC A FRESH APPROACH TO VOCATIONAL EDUCATION

2 THE CURRENT SITUATION 2 THE EDUCATION SYSTEM IS FAILING OUR YOUNG PEOPLE Despite signs of economic recovery youth unemployment remains stubbornly high at 20% The UK economy has an overabundance of low skilled workers and no middle ground of skilled technical workers From 2015, young people will stay in full time education until they are 18 but the current system does little to develop their employability skills PROVIDERS Know that too many current qualifications are old, tired and not relevant to today s industry needs LEARNERS & PARENTS 60% of young people aren t prepared for or don t have the right attitude for the workplace 85% of young people look to their parents for careers advice, yet parents don t understand the progression routes available and therefore favour academic study EMPLOYERS Half of all employers think the education system is too focused on academia and does not go far enough in preparing young people for work City & Guilds Making Education Work, October 2013 City & Guilds Making Education Work, October 2013

3 THE CHALLENGE 3 CREATING AN ALTERNATIVE ROUTE TO EMPLOYMENT AND HIGHER EDUCATION I have to stay on in education or training until I m 18. What do I need to do to get a fulfilling career? I know I have to do more to stand out from the crowd Our recruits need more than just qualifications, they need the right skills and attitudes to be part of our business higher apprenticeships Higher Education Not in education or employment Full-time vocational route Employment

4 HOW DO WE KNOW THIS? 4 EXTENSIVE MARKET INSIGHT & SCOPING, WITH INDUSTRY CO-CREATION TechBac has been designed in response to industry and key stakeholders research comprising of: Face-to-face events - Initial consultations with up to 50 stakeholders per industry area Research - with 1,000 employers into their work experience needs Half of all year olds think maths would be improved if it was more geared towards real-life practical scenarios year olds find visits to employers the most useful source of careers advice 57% of young people feel that having more confidence in their own abilities will help them to find work City & Guilds Ways into Work, June 2012 Online consultations - 15 online discussions with learners (vocational & A-level students) Letters of support - Royal Academy of Engineering, Black County UTC Raising Awareness Industry events, PR, marketing and advertising Half of employers value core skills (maths, English and communications skills) most in young recruits 77% of employers feel that young people with work experience are more employable Employers value attitude (71%) and strong literacy, numeracy and communication skills (49%) most in new recruits City & Guilds Making Education Work, October 2013
