Take the lead with the first surge protection conforming to the latest standards Let s connect. Surge protection Conformant to: E 6643-:0 and IEC 6643-:0
Be at the leading edge when it comes to surge protection We have achieved the highest levels for your safety It is worthwhile investing in the best surge protection because lightning can strike anyone. Every hour, there are approximately one million lightning strikes occuring somewhere around the world, quite frequently with serious consequences. A look at statistics from property insurance companies shows that even these days, lightning strikes cause damage amounting to millions each year, and this trend is on the rise! A lightning strike involves a voltage discharge of several hundred kilovolts. In an extremely short time, there can be currents in the range of between 50 and 00,000 amps. Electronic components, in particular, are often not able to withstand this massive surge in voltage, which can lead to expensive repairs and downtime, and ultimately resulting in a loss of sales revenues.this is reason enough to improve on your protection and our new VARITECTOR PU Series will prevent any potential damage and resulting costs arising from lightning and surge voltages. What does IEC/E 6643-:0 apply to? IEC/E 6643-:0 applies to surge protectors which safeguard against the effects of indirect and direct lightning strikes or other transient surge voltages. It refers to equipment intended for use in 50-Hz AC power grids and in systems with nominal voltages up to 000 V. What's new in IEC/E 6643-:0? The latest version of IEC/E 6643-:0 specifies, among other things, a new test procedure which takes into account, the failure behaviour of protective equipment in the event of an overload, or when the service life has expired. From now on, in what is known as a failuremode simulation, the correct varistors are now used as test specimens, instead of the previously required copper blocks. The Type operating duty test is conducted with a higher current than that specified in the previous standard. IT networks are also included for the first time in the new standard. Only from Weidmüller: VARITECTOR PU The first surge protection conforming to IEC/E 6643-:0. You can protect your investment right now with the latest technology: our new VARITECTOR PU surge protectors work with a combination of varistor/gas-discharge technology. They are the first products on the market which currently meet the IEC/E 6643-:0 guidelines and are particularly economical when in use. Key advantages: Optimum protection against damage arising from lightning and surges Long-term safety planning Simple installation and maintenance Exceptionally economical to use 3
ever worry about thunderstorms again With VARITECTOR PU, you are completely protected Why is surge protection becoming more important than ever? The number of severe thunderstorms around the world has increased significantly in the last few years. The World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) anticipates that, given globally increasing average temperatures, the number of thunderstorms will continue to increase. If there is thunder and lightning near your system, in future you will be able to remain very relaxed. Our products in the VARITECTOR PU Series offer today's best protection against damage due to lightning and surges. They reduce interference coupling through transient surge voltages significantly below the levels prescribed by E and DI VDE 00. Why is this investment worthwhile? Compared to the impacts of a lightning strike on people and materials, the costs for a modern surge protection system are quite low. In addition, the longer your system is running, the higher the probability of becoming a victim of damage due to power surges. Our tip: protect employees, systems and capital equipment with the latest technology. This will give you peace of mind, as well as saving you money in the long term. Future-oriented and standards compliant All products in the VARITECTOR PU Series are tested to IEC/E 6643-:0. From now on, they can be planned for and installed in all systems, in conformance with IEC / VDE V and IEC / VDE Use in energy supply systems Our new VARITECTOR PU Series covers a wide range of applications, enabling us to offer just the right product for your network configuration and voltage level. We also offer products tested to E :0 for photovoltaic applications. Protection from damage It takes a lightning strike just a fraction of a second to severely damage or even destroy your equipment and machinery. The safety of your employees could also be at risk. In such cases, our VARITECTOR PU, which incorporates the latest protection technology, will ensure the safety of all. Protection from downtime A control system which is out of commission, or a disabled corporate IT system can quickly mean the stoppage of a complete manufacturing plant. You are potentially faced with high repair costs, loss of revenues and even long-term economic damage. Our new VARITECTOR PU surge protectors offer you optimum protection against such occurrences. Long-term safety planning If you start planning with our VARITECTOR PU products today, you will avoid the costs of any later modifications, redesigns and changes required to meet the latest standard. You will also bring more stability to your planning process and will therefore be on the safe side, in particular, for long-term building projects. This will reduce your planning costs. 4 5
You want smart technology We have considered everything very carefully Faster to install Installation can be carried out extremely quickly and without any tools, thanks to the new mounting-rail clips. In addition to the best possible protection, our VARITECTOR PU surge protectors offer you a whole host of unique product features to make the installation and maintenance of your surge-protection systems convenient and economical. See for yourself: Clearest view Thanks to the large status window, the functional status of the surge protectors in the cabinet can be seen at a glance. Immediate status reports The remote signalling contact with its PUSH I socket enables fast connections and allows permanent status monitoring of the surge protectors. Flexible positioning The bases for our surge protectors can be rotated by 80. As a result, wiring paths can be shortened without reducing your view within the cabinet. 80 Securely fastened During installation, the protectors click into the base with both audible and tactile feedback. This eases installation and ensures uniquely high vibration resistance ideal for use in the nacelles of wind turbines. Maximise profits the easy way We have designed our VARITECTOR PU surge protectors in such a way that very little time and personnel expense is required to install and maintain them. Compared to conventional surge protectors, you will save considerable amounts of money and can significantly maximise your profits. 6 7
What you always wanted to know about lightning protection Let us put you in the picture Lightning-protection systems safeguard systems from potential fires or electrical destruction resulting from the effects of lightning, or voltage surges, and protect people from injury. For this, the incident voltage is reduced in steps, to such an extent that there is no longer any need to worry about this happening. A distinction is made between external and internal lightning protection. Where are surge protectors installed? A building is divided into lightning-protection zones (LPZ0 to LPZ3) which are organised into areas from the outside to the inside. Suitable surge protectors and equipotential bonding are installed at the boundaries of each individual zone. Type I: at the boundary between LPZ0 and LPZ = building feed-in Type II: at the boundary between LPZ and LPZ = energy distributor Type III: at the boundary between LPZ and LPZ3 = connections External lightning protection External lightning protection consists of an air termination, discharge system and an earthing system. It conducts roughly half of the incident current into the surrounding earth. The other half flows into the building s electrical lines. If external lightning protection is installed, then, according to the standards, a Type I surge protector is prescribed for the building entry point. Internal lightning protection Internal lightning protection consists of an equipotential system with surge protectors such as our VARITECTOR PU Series. It, in turn, is divided into three stages: Type I surge protectors These are installed at the building entry point and reduce entering voltages. Modern surge protectors such as our VARITECTOR PU Series are able to achieve a level of < 300 V. ote: as soon as external lightning protection has been installed, the standards prescribe a Type I surge protector at the building entry point. Type II surge protectors These are normally installed at the power distributors of a building and ideally limit the remaining surge voltage. Type III surge protectors These protect connected terminal equipment from surge voltages. For this, the surge voltage entering lines, connectors or power sockets is reduced to a level which equipment or systems can withstand. 8 9
You have individual requirements We have a flexible product range Whatever you would like to protect, the VARITECTOR PU Series allows tailor-made protection for every conceivable application area from office buildings to manufacturing operations, right through to power-generation systems. Solutions for complex system infrastructures VARITECTOR PU Type I free of leakage current and thus ideal for use upstream of an electric meter VARITECTOR PU Type II a complete product line for all types of network configurations (T-C network, T-S network, T-C-S network, TT network, IT network) VARITECTOR PU Type III offers ideal protection for all important terminal devices How much protection is necessary? Prior to installing a surge-protection system, a risk assessment according to IEC 6305 Parts 4 must be carried out. This entails a categorisation into protection classes depending on the strength of the pulse current (0/350 μs) which the protection system must withstand in the event of a strike. Protection Class I = Protection against pulse currents to 00 ka Protection against the highest expected current strength To be used in highly sensitive facilities such as petrochemical plants, storage sites for explosives, etc. Protection Class II = Protection against pulse currents up to 50 ka Protection against above-average current strengths To be used with important public and/or sensitive facilities such as hospitals, warehouses or telecommunications towers Protection Classes III and IV = Protection against pulse currents up to 00 ka Protection against normal current strengths To be used in 80 % of all facilities such as administration buildings, normal industrial plants or apartment and commercial buildings Special solutions for photovoltaic systems Products which have been specifically designed for the DC side of a plant are tested in accordance with E :0. VARITECTOR PU Type I optimum solution when separation distances cannot be maintained VARITECTOR PU Type II general-purpose DC surge protection solutions for photovoltaic systems Special solutions for wind turbines Optimum protection through especially high vibration resistance. VARITECTOR PU Type I 5-kA units are the perfect solution for protection of turbines against direct lightning strikes. VARITECTOR PU Type II especially VARITECTOR PU II 750 V / 5 ka products provide ideal protection for generators in nacelles. 0
