1 Cover Sheet For the Presenter The following storyhour program is designed for preschoolers (primarily 3- and 4-year olds). You don t have to read the leader s comments word-for-word, but try to include the information in your own words. Of course, if you don t have parents attending with the children, you can skip those asides. The information that is just for you is in italics so don t read that text. The general outline of our storytime is: I. Welcome/Introductory Comments II. Opening Song III. Rhyme IV. Quieting rhyme V. Book VI. Song VII. Book VIII. Counting Activity IX. Rhyme with flannelboard X. Extra Rhyme XI. Closing Rhyme Feel free to substitute your own opening and closing rhymes as well as any rhymes with a similar theme that the children have heard before. Repetition of songs and action rhymes from previous storytimes is better than introducing all new ones. Feel free to make a copy of rhymes that you would like to use again in the coming weeks. We have provided several extra items that we think will be helpful. * Patterns for flannel board cut-outs. * Craft ideas to offer after your storytime has officially ended. *Take-home materials.

2 Just Ducky Introduction Welcome to storytime. I am glad you could all be here today. We are going to be sharing some rhymes and books. Our theme today is ducks. To the caregivers: Please join in with our rhymes and actions. Let s start with a simple song, sung to the tune of Happy Birthday. Opening Song Good morning to you Good morning to you Good morning, dear Tommy, Good morning, to you. (Repeat with all of the children s names if possible if your group is too large, just substitute children and sing 3 or 4 times. You might use a puppet helper to sing Good morning to you to remind everyone of your name.) To the adults: Today we will focus on the skill of phonological awareness (point to the poster of the six literacy skills if you have one) which is the ability to pick out smaller sounds that make up words. Listening to rhymes and making the sounds that animals make are two ways to help your child with phonological awareness. We will also begin working on letter and number recognition skills. -1-

3 Rhyme When ducks get up in the morning They always say good day. When ducks get up in the morning They always say good day. Quack-quack, quack-quack That is what they say. Quack-quack, quack-quack That is what they say. When Ducks Get Up in the Morning Repeat with these substitutions:... cows... / Moo-moo fish... / Glub-glub birds... / Tweet-tweet pigs... / Oink-oink chickens... / Cheep-cheep... Now it s time to settle down for a story. Let s get all of our wiggles out now: Quieting Rhyme I wiggle my fingers, I wiggle my toes. I wiggle my arms, I wiggle my nose. I think that the wiggles Are all out of me Now I can sit down And hear a story. -2-

4 Book Read Duck at the Door by Jackie Urbanovic. This book gives the children an opportunity to shout It s a DUCK! at the appropriate point you may have to reread this part two or three times before moving on. Other books you might substitute are: Duck Soup by Jackie Urbanovic, Webster J. Duck by Martin Waddell, Baby Duck s New Friend by Devin & Frank Asch, Quack by Arthur Yorkinks, and Dawdle Duckling by Tony Buzzeo. Song To the adults: Singing with your child also helps with phonological awareness because it naturally divides words into syllables and most children s songs rhyme too! Let s try this silly song to the tune of On Top of Old Smokey. Misfit Duckling Put up an enlarged copy of the song lyrics and encourage the parents to join in. If you don t remember the tune, listen to On Top of Spaghetti at Be sure to practice ahead of time to get the rhythm. You may wish to make up some simple gestures to go along with this song. You may want to sing it a couple of times. There once was a duckling Who hated to swim The other ducklings Could not play with him He sat on the seashore Watching them play Til one day a windstorm Just blew him away. He dropped in the barnyard Of a very large farm He found that the hen house Was cozy and warm Now he is happy Away from the sea His friends are the chickens Says he, They love me! -3-

5 Book Read One Duck Stuck by Phyllis Root. Emphasize the sounds like splish, plunk, slosh, etc. Counting Activity Go through the book again to practice counting. You don t have to count every animal, just pick a few and say How many frogs tried to help the duck? You might want to create flannelboard numbers and sets of animals to practice counting -- you can use these even if you weren t able to use One Duck Stuck. Put up the correct number to go with each set as you count the animals. Rhyme With flannelboard another counting activity (you will need to make 5 ducks for flannelboard) Five little duckies Waddle in a row Following their mother Going to and fro One little ducky Stops for a swim Four more little duckies Jump in after him Four little duckies Swim across the lake Getting very tired They need to take a break One little ducky Heads for the shore Mama tells the others Swim just a little more Three little duckies

6 Find a place to rest Eating squishy bugs They really are the best! One little ducky Tired as she can be While others are still eating She lies beneath a tree Two little duckies Head back to the nest With mother in the lead They ll soon find all the rest Back home, little duckies Too tired to make a peep Cuddle in their bed And soon they re fast asleep. S. Gruber Extra Rhyme To the caregivers: You may have heard the rhyme C is for Cookie on Sesame Street. This is a simple rhyme that you can use to teach letter recognition by substituting any letter you wish. Let s try it! Put up a large printed or cut-out letter D and a duck picture from the counting set. [If you aren t familiar with this rhyme, you can watch Cookie Monster sing it on You Tube at -5-

Now it s time to end our storyhour. To the caregivers: Feel free to stay a while and do a craft or check out some books to take home. Remember to say some rhymes or sing some songs with your child this week! Closing Rhyme [You might want to print a copy of this rhyme in large type so that the adults can join in.] See you later, alligator (use hand to shade your eyes as if searching) In a while, crocodile (point to watch or clock) Bye-bye, butterfly (wave) Toodle-oo, kangaroo (wave hankie) Time to go, buffalo (look at watch and shake head as if running late) Just like that, fat cat (snap fingers) It s the end, my friend. (shrug shoulders and throw up hands in a giving up gesture)

8 Crafts: We like the idea of providing a craft at the end of storyhour. Something simple is fine. This gives parents a chance to visit and it re-inforces what the children learned. If you have parents leave for storytime, you might invite them to come back for crafts as they drop off their child. As you hand them the take-home sheets, you might mention that today s storytime focused on phonological awareness by working with rhymes. You might also continue counting practice using the animal flannelboard pieces that you made. -7-

9 Just Ducky Take-Home Sheet Rhymes and songs help teach phonological awareness awareness of the sounds that make up words. You may have noticed that your child enjoys the way a nursery rhyme sounds even if it doesn t make much sense to him. When you introduce a new rhyme or song, repeat it at least twice. Three times is even better. And be sure to keep repeating the old, familiar rhymes. When ducks get up in the morning They always say good day. 10 Bringing it home: Try to point out different rhyming words as you go through your daily routine this week. Here is an example of a rhyming activity you can do with your child using the pictures on the following page: This is a kitten That rhymes with mitten. If we call it a cat Then it rhymes with bat. Car rhymes with star. Dog rhymes with frog. Fish rhymes with dish. Moon rhymes with spoon. And cow rhymes with sow -- a mother pig. Now let s use those rhymes again in a silly verse: Tiny kittens Do not wear mittens. But this Halloween cat Just might chase a bat. You can t drive a car To a distant star. And don t ask a fish To eat from a dish. If you go to the moon You won t need a spoon. But you will find a cow In the barn with the sow.
