2 Aims To understand the importance of reading for pleasure To develop an understanding of what phonics is To understand how to support your child with reading and writing

5 What is EAL? English as an additional language All children who can speak another language as well as English, even if their English is really good.

6 Being an EAL learner is a good thing! At George Spicer our children speak 55 different languages

10 What is Phonics? Phonics is where we teach the sound the letter makes. Children start daily phonics in Nursery and this continues through Reception, year one and year two and beyond. We teach children the sounds and how to break the words into sounds like this b i g We follow the Letters and Sounds programme

11 Letter sounds Each letter has a name and a sound What can you see here? What is the first sound that you make when saying the word pizza? We teach the sound and the name and an action to support children to remember the sound (Jolly phonics actions)

12 The process of phonics We do lots of work on hearing initial sounds in words and sorting words by their initial sound. s a

13 Rhythm and rhyme We also do lots of work on rhythm and rhyme BBC - KS1 Bitesize Literacy - River Rhyming Clapping words Walking words Finding something with 2 syllables Body percussion/patterns

14 Phonics in reading We teach the children to segment and blend words Segment break a word down into its sounds man m a n Blend push the sounds together to read the word m a n man

15 Practice practice practice be patient. It takes a while for children to be able to blend practice orally first. Play the robot game with CVC words. Play I spy

16 Expectations End of Reception Expectation: children read and understand simple sentences. They use phonic knowledge to decode regular words and read them aloud accurately. They also read some common irregular words. They demonstrate understanding when talking with others about what they have read.

17 Phonics and Writing Children will make marks and ascribe meanings to those marks. This may not include any letter shapes at this point.

18 Children write some letter shapes usually those in their name. They may not have any link to the actual sounds in the word I hope you had a good day at school today but you can come back another day.

19 Children hear some initial sounds this may not be all of them and the letter formation is developing but may not be correct. Gruffalo g Owl - a (m for w, b and d confusion and t and f confusion are all very common)

22 Expectations End of Reception Expectation: Children use their phonic knowledge to write words in ways which match their spoken sounds. They also write some irregular common words. They write simple sentences which can be read by themselves and others. Some words are spelt correctly and others are phonetically plausible.

23 Talking Home Learning and Support Read lots of stories Help your child with letter formation this includes getting them ready to write. Play Lego, use playdough, help them write their name. Take photos of them on visits and encourage them to write about it and bring it in to share remember their writing won t be perfect. Play games Don t worry!!
