History Mane Support is a nonprofit organization that provides a ministry through equine assisted grief counseling to those who have experienced a death or who are anticipating the death of someone they know. Unlike therapeutic riding 100% of the activities are conducted on the ground, as participants learn communication and coping skills, problem solving techniques, relationship building and self-esteem not from the counselors but from the different personalities and attributes of the horses. Because of the individuality of grief, participants are encouraged to do the activities in ways that work for them. There is no right or wrong way to complete the tasks, as long as they stay safe. Much like the individuality of grief in that there is no right or wrong way or designated timeline for one to grieve. It is the end result that matters, allowing people to accomplish their goals in mannerisms that pertain to their own needs, within a safe and supportive environment. It is through these interactions with our Mane Support team (counselor, equine specialist and equine counselor- the horse) that healing and understanding can begin to take place. In turn, putting together a plan for incorporating their loss into life again, allowing them to be successful in school, their home and their community. Location and Programs Offered Mane Support s home location is in Blount County, with service provided to all surrounding communities. There are ongoing groups for children, teens and families who have experienced a death, for widows and for those who are facing a cancer diagnosis. Along with groups Mane Support also offers individual sessions, corporate learning opportunities and community education and workshops.
Qualifications of Mane Support Staff Both the therapists and equine specialists of Mane Support are certified through EAGALA (Equine Assisted Growth and Learning Association). In addition, professional experience, degrees and certifications are held in the fields of equine training and management, child development, social work, special education and thanantology(grief counseling). Funding Because Mane Support is a nonprofit/501(c)3 organization, the funding for our program comes primarily from grants and private donors. Fees for the individual and group sessions are by payment of choice, with no questions asked of the participants. It is the goal of this organization that no one be turned away due to financial difficulties; therefore we depend on our resources to ensure that children, youth, teens, families and organizations receive the support that they need. Vision Statement Through the healing power of horses, Mane Support is dedicated to broadening the continuum of grief counseling for those who have experienced a death or other types of loss. Equine assisted grief counseling services, community education and collaborative efforts with other individuals and organizations, work together within Mane Support to achieve the highest standard of care and compassion for those who are hurting in our communities. Mission Statement Mane Support provides a ministry through equine assisted grief counseling services to reach children, youth, teens, adults and families who have experienced a death, anticipating the death of someone they know or who have experienced other types of loss. Values Uphold a commitment of compassion and support to those who are hurting through a ministry of healing. Maintain the highest ethical and moral standards of professionalism. Ensure the integrity of Mane Support through actions of faith.
Objectives Establish and maintain a standard of excellence for equine assisted grief counseling. Provide equine assisted grief counseling services to individuals regardless of race, religion or economic standing. Encourage community organizations and leaders to become a part of Mane Support to broaden support for our communities. Promote community awareness and collaboration efforts of Mane Support through education, sharing of information and community outreach.
Mane Support Year-Round Groups Family Support Night Family Support Night is a group for families who have experienced a death of someone they know. Following a meal together, K-2 nd, 3 rd -5 th, 6 th -8 th, high school and parents/guardians each break up into their own group to address their own individual needs pertaining to the loss. On ground activities with the horses, art and discussion groups are all a part of providing a safe and supportive arena. This group is ongoing and is held each Tuesday night from 6:00p.m.-8:00p.m. Cost Summary: $ per session 20 participants for a 2 hour session with a meal provided. Triple C Ranch Triple C Ranch a program specifically designed for children, teens and families who have been affected by cancer. On ground activities with the horses, art and discussion groups are all a part of providing a safe and supportive arena. This group is ongoing. Cost Summary: $ per session 20 participants for a 2 hour session 2 times per month, with a meal provided. Changing Reins Changing Reins is a group designed for widows of all ages. Through the equine activities, art and discussion, participants begin to put pieces together again, in a different shape than before. The group also allows for building of acquaintances, as stories and lives are shared each now knowing that they are not alone with this experience. Cost Summary: $ per session 10 participants for a 1 hour session 1 time per week, with refreshments provided.
Trail Makers...a time of healing for women Trail Makers is a group for breast cancer survivors. Using the healing power of the horses, the participants will be involved in activities that address their personal issues around their breast cancer (all activities are conducted on the ground, there is no riding) while continuing to build on their personal strength and courage. Cost Summary: $ per session 10 participants for a 1 hour session 1 time per week, with refreshments provided. Individual Sessions Along with groups and camps, Mane Support also offers individual sessions for children, teens, adults and families. Each session is one hour in length, with the participant attending one session per week for four consecutive weeks. At the end of first four weeks, goals are re-evaluated to set up another four weeks of equine assisted grief counseling, addressing new and/or existing issues, if needed. During the sessions participants are able to process their thoughts and feelings of loss within a more individualized setting, as the equine counselors provide the support and feedback needed to continue on a journey of healing. Cost Summary: $45.00 per session/per individual
Mane Support Equine Counselors The most integral part of our team is the equine counselor--the horse. Their honesty, life in the moment attitude, and uncanny ability to provide a mirror image of what is too difficult to see or talk about, gives the participants information they need to re-develop their life skills, without a word being said. From age four to thirty plus, these quarter horses, drafts, minis and thoroughbreds intuitively select the participants through their reactions and interactions. In turn, this type of exhibited behavior provides great potential and opportunity for allowing the healing process to begin. As they go through their daily jobs, their needs are great. Just like us, they have routine checks to keep them healthy and to pinpoint any possible emerging problems. When they begin to age or if they sustain an injury, great care is taken to ensure that they are comfortable. They are provided with grain and hay specific to their individual needs on a daily basis, with additional medications or supplements given as needed. Providing for Mane Support s equine counselors is priority and is the least that we can do, as they give their all each day to this ministry. Thank you for consideration to join in the efforts of Mane Support to provide a safe and secure environment for its most valuable asset our equine counselors.
