7 Sedimentology and paleoecology of the Hunghuayuan Formation (Lower Ordovician) reefs in the Upper Yangtze Platform, South China Li Qijian (Paleontology & Stratigraphy) Directed by Prof. Li Yue Nanjing Institute of Geology and Paleontology, Chinese Academy of Sciences Abstract The Yangtze Platform as a part of northwest margin of the Gondwana Land was situated within the low to intermediate palaeolatitudes of the Southern Hemisphere during the Early Ordovician time. Late Tremadocian to early Floian (Early Ordovician) Hunghuayuan Formation is typically of shallow water carbonates rich in bioclastic and intraclastic components covering a large epicontinental marine from Northern Guizhou, western part of platform to Southern Anhui, southeastern margin of the platform. Amounts of carbonate sediments on the ramp setting especially reefs diverse in community structures are considered as a preference of the ecological and paleogeographic pattern of shallow marine communities during the early episode of the Great Ordovician Biodiversification Event. Differentiations of the reef communities were essentially controlled by the depths of marine floor. It is reasonable that ecological as well as sedimentary varieties of the Ordovician Radiation background did control the structures of the reefal limestones. Hunghuayuan Formation from the near shoal high energy belt, Upper Yangtze Platform is not idealized for reef-building, and more likely for occurrences of thin bedded biostromeal facies characterized by rich bioclastic components together with sparse Calathium lithistid sponge fragments. However, few in situ reefal rocks with baffling or binding structures could be found herein. Patch reefs from the distal shoal are mainly catalogued into two styles of metazoanal reef mound and microbial mound iii

8 palaeoecologically. Their profiles generally show as small in size with limited thicknesses about tens meters and domical or gental lense in relieves. Accessory organisms of ostracods, trilobites, gastropods, brachiopod, nautilus and echinoderms in reefs are variety in biodiversity, abundance and taphonomic features. The reef mounds constructed by frame builders of lithistid sponge and Calathium favorably grew from the central Yangtze Platform. These metazoanal fauna aggressively habituated on hard substrates originally deposited by crinoidal debris. Even through small-size pioneering modular organizations such as bryozoans occupied this innovation substrate, massive modular organizations such as corals and stromatoporoids, which are typically of Paleozoic Evolutionary Fauna as well as potential for the forming of reef complex were not considered as the key roles for biotic structure. Reef mound cores were frequently cut by water currents resulting distinctive of erosion features of channels filled by coarse calcarenites. Toward the southeastern margin of the Yangtze Platform, coeval microbial mounds were more favorable of mat style substrates. Biofilms, including filamentous microbes, are crucial for the microbial activities and played important roles in encrusting and bounding within deeper marine belt. Thrombolitic, stromatolitic structures occur independently or even intergrowths within microbial mounds. Microbial mounds are transitional changeable from horizontal to column in shapes coinciding with the increasing of water depth. Nevertheless, lithistid sponge and Calathium are lower in volume from mound limestones, they are more likely assigned to reef attach elements. In a global perspective on reef evolutionary pattern, the lithistid spong Calathium dominated reef mounds from the Hunghuayuan Formation match to Phases 2 and 3 of Webby s division on Ordovician reef-building phrases. It records a subtle transitional linkage from skeletal dominated biota linking to the Middle Late Ordovician stromatoporoid coral dominated reef complexes. Moreover, geographic pattern of the Hunghuayuan Formation with changeable in community structures from shallow lithistid spong Calathium
