ORGANISATION CHART: The post holder will report to the Head of the School of Computer Science, Mathematics & Business Computing. 6. JOB PURPOSE: The successful candidate will be expected: 1. To contribute to taught programmes at all levels both within and beyond their particular specialism, and to undertake student support and assessment activities as appropriate. 2. To work with the team (and lead where possible) in the development of new modules, new programmes and innovative teaching and delivery methods. 3. To undertake original research in Computer Science, Information Systems or related disciplines and to prepare material for publication. 4. To contribute to the international Computer Science community through, for example, membership of peer review bodies, and refereeing and reviewing of project proposals and manuscripts. 5. To undertake the role of Personal Academic Tutor to a group of students 6. To contribute to the research environment of the Department, School and the University as appropriate. 7. To work flexibly as an enthusiastic member of the School team undertaking routine additional tasks as necessary. 8. To contribute, appropriate to experience, to the broader work of the University. 7. BACKGROUND INFORMATION: The Faculty of Science and Engineering, located at the Thornton Science Park, hosts the School of Computer Science, Mathematics & Business Computing and departments of Mechanical Engineering, Electronic & Electrical Engineering, Chemical Engineering and Natural Sciences. Our vision is to create an internationally-renowned multi-disciplinary campus which targets and stimulates private sector growth through employment, education, research and inward investment.

2 The Department of Computer Science is a friendly and active department that offers taught courses at undergraduate and postgraduate levels undertakes research supervision for students registered for the degrees of MPhil or PhD. There are four main programmes at Undergraduate level :- BSc Computer Science, BSc Information Systems Management, BSc Games Development and BSc Interactive Digital Media. At Postgraduate level :- MSc Information Systems, MSc Programme and Project Management, MSc Project Engineering, Postgraduate Certificate in Teaching Computer Science In Schools. We also have a growing number of partner colleges, both at home and in South-East Asia, with whom we exchange curriculum ideas. The successful candidate will be an excellent teacher at HE Level with a flexible outlook and will be prepared to become a hard-working member of an enthusiastic team. The existing curriculum covers such traditional areas as Programming (Java, C++, Objective C), Databases (Access, SQL server, mysql), Web-based Technologies, Computer Systems and Processors, Project Management, Networking Technologies (CISCO & MS), Network Management, Intelligent Technologies, Multimedia and Games specialisms (Games development and Design, 3D Imaging Software, AI for Games etc). Preference may be given to a candidate who offers complementary research expertise and a strong willingness to work on collaborative projects. 8. WORK PERFORMED AND/OR KEY RESULT AREAS: 8.1 Communicating Effectively The role holder will communicate effectively to learned and non-learned audiences both orally and written. This includes: Facilitation of students learning through lectures, tutorials and seminars at undergraduate, postgraduate and masters levels. Production of course material at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Production of distance learning materials and support distance learning students. Writing applications for research funding and write and publish research papers Contributing to the writing of course validation documents as required. Contributing to the cross-department development of curriculum and course materials Participating in marketing activities including open and visit days and taster lectures to schools. 8.2 Leadership and Working Collaboratively The post holder will be expected to undertake module leadership activities and work with other tutors and department staff (administrative and technical) to ensure delivery of learning and teaching and appropriate assessment is undertaken.

3 8.3 Liaison and Networking The post holder will liaise with professional bodies, learned societies, employer forums, feeder schools and colleges with the aim of promoting the Department and its programmes and increasing student admissions. The post holder will be expected to be an active member of relevant departmental committees and to initiate and lead short term internal networks. 8.4 Delivering a High Quality Standard of Service The post holder is expected to: To enhance the quality of taught and research programmes at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, and contributing to the development of new modules and programmes. Act upon peer observation feedback, student feedback, and external examiner feedback to maintain high quality in learning and teaching. Undertake various other duties within the Department, Faculty and University as required and considered commensurate with the grade of the post. 8.5 Effective Decision Making In the context of the role-holder s teaching duties, they will be expected to: Make independent decisions on the content of individual learning activities and marking for student assessment purposes, and to provide advice to colleagues on such matters. Sit on student selection panels as required Make collaborative decisions with programme teams on the content of taught and research programmes at undergraduate and/or postgraduate levels. The post-holder will also contribute to and influence departmental strategy and policy over the range of the department s activities. 8.6 Planning and Organising Self and Others The role holder will organise, plan and deliver all modules for which responsibility is held (either solely or jointly with other academic staff) and use resources appropriately to this end. The role holder will co-ordinate other staff in the effective delivery of programmes for which they act as programme leader. Resource use is linked to student learning and retention and to the efficient performance of duties associated with the roles of lecturer, administrator (where relevant), researcher and member of the broader academic community. More specifically the role holder is expected to: Undertake the role of personal academic tutor dealing with students as per university guidance. Contribute to cross-departmental programme organisation in relation to delivery of modules and programmes. Use technology to support learning, or curriculum or student development. Organise the delivery of modules within the timetable provided. Prepare high quality teaching materials for own and student use. Organise own workload appropriately outside of timetabled hours. 8.7 Innovation and Improvement (Effective Problem Solving) The role holder is expected to:

4 Deal with problems e.g. A students academic progress and personal issues (e.g. responding to needs of students with learning difficulties through referral to the appropriate support departments within the university) Design new modules as required 8.8 Analysis and Research The post holder is expected to: Research teaching materials and to identify and utilise current best practice in the relevant subject area. Conduct subject specific research and scholarship as appropriate Supervise undergraduate and postgraduate research projects 8.9 Sensory and Physical Demands Work in a standard office environment although much of the work undertaken will be done in lecture rooms and laboratories Work Environment To be responsible for the health and safety of students in their immediate working environment 8.11 Pastoral Care and Welfare To act as a Personal Academic Tutor (PAT) and deal with student issues and enquiries as appropriate. To work as part of a team with colleagues within both the department and the University Team Development The appointee will participate in activities, committees and team meetings and will participate in staff development activities with a view to strengthening competencies. The appointee will undertake peer mentoring and review of colleagues Teaching and Learning Support The role holder is expected to: Design inductions to modules and programmes for students, adapting delivery to suit learners needs Design and deliver one off lectures or workshops as required, providing feedback on performance Assess students overall performance Be responsible for the overall quality assurance of module provision Contribute to overall curriculum development and programme design in specific areas of curriculum Teach on CPD modules appropriate to expertise and experience. Undertake marketing and recruitment activities including development of taster lectures for visit and open days Knowledge and Experience PhD in Computer Science, Information Systems or related discipline. Record of publications (or clear potential to achieve this). Experience of teaching and/or supporting learning in higher education.

5 Preferably, experience as a teacher and/or researcher in a University or research institute. Preferably, experience of teaching at the interface between school and university education. Engagement with Industry personnel in promotion and development of courses Essential Requirements are those, without which, a candidate would not be able to do the job. 7 UNIVERSITY OF CHESTER FACULTY OF SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT OF COMPUTER SCIENCE, MATHS AND BUSINESS COMPUTING LECTURER IN COMPUTER SCIENCE SALARY SCALE TSR 3, points 31 34, 31,644-34,565 per annum. CONDITIONS OF APPOINTMENT Permanent contracts will be offered to those candidates who possess both a PhD and a postgraduate teaching qualification/higher Education Academy membership. A successful candidate who lacks either will be offered a fixed term contract, pending fulfilment of these conditions. RESIDENCE REQUIREMENT It is a requirement of this post that within 12 months of appointment, the post-holder should live within a 30 mile radius or within a one hour travelling time by public transport from the University. HOLIDAY ENTITLEMENT 35 days per annum (pro-rata during the commencement and cessation years). Two extra statutory days during the Christmas period. MEDICAL EXAMINATION The successful candidate will be required to complete an Occupational Health Questionnaire and will also be required to undergo a medical examination. ESSENTIAL CERTIFICATES Short-listed candidates will be asked to bring to interview, proof of qualification as outlined on the Job Description and Person Specification provided. Upon appointment, copies of essential certificates will be required by HRM Services. DBS CHECKS The successful applicant will have to undergo a DBS check before an appointment can be made. PENSION SCHEME All academic staff will be enrolled in the Teachers Pension Scheme from their first day of employment, in accordance with the scheme rules. If staff do not wish to remain a member of the scheme, they will be entitled to opt out after enrolment.
