1 Digital Program Overview Introduction This guide explores the Interactive Digital Path in the Pearson Algebra 1, Geometry, and Algebra 2 Common Core Edition. It describes PowerAlgebra.com and PowerGeometry.com where you learn how to access digital content to manage and teach your course. Learn how the power of technology can guide students through the process of mathematical reasoning and sense-making. Getting Started To get started, go to PowerAlgebra.com or PowerGeometry.com. Click Pearson SuccessNet or the portal log-in area. 1

4 If you cannot find the lesson you are looking for, click Search. Multiple search options allow you to find a lesson by Keyword, Media Type, or Standard. You can also search for selected worksheets to assign to students. Digital Path Contents My Math Video Now that you have learned how to navigate through the digital path, learn how to explore its contents. Every chapter begins with a My Math Video student-developed and student-produced content that brings real-life context to the mathematics. Students are encouraged to create their own videos through the Pearson Video Challenge. This provides an opportunity for students to model with mathematics as they reason both abstractly and quantitatively. 4

5 Solve It! Every lesson begins with a Solve It! problem that helps connect what students know to an important concept in the lesson. Solve It! problems require students to apply the mathematical practices as they work toward a solution. To view a Solve It! problem online, choose a lesson, and click View. The lesson opens up to a Solve It! Use the arrows at the bottom of the screen to move through the Solve It! Dynamic Activity The Dynamic Activity is a virtual manipulative with guided instruction. Students find patterns and explore concepts visually while they use the technology to attend to precision, make use of structure, and look for repeated reasoning. To advance through the guided instruction in the Dynamic Activity, click Next. Dynamic Activities are available in most lessons. You can access them by clicking the link or using the Search function. Select Search By Media Type, and click Activity. 5

6 Instruction Now, take a look at the Instruction phase of the lesson, which guides students through problems aligned to the Standards for Mathematical Content with step-by-step solutions. Click a problem to begin. Use the audio icon to turn off the avatar s voice if desired. Click on the arrows to guide through the problem at your own pace. You can go back to steps at any time to review. Alternative problems, when available, provide opportunities to differentiate instruction. Each problem ends with Got It?, a built-in check for understanding that gives students a chance to practice and apply the concept. Use the buttons at the bottom to display answer choices, the correct answer, and a fully stepped-out solution. Practice After the online instruction, you will want your students to practice what they have learned. The Practice phase begins with a Lesson Check to check for understanding. You can assign online homework to students through the classroom management system. Notice the support tools that are available for students. Explore these tools further, and learn how they help students complete their homework. 6

7 Vocabulary Vocabulary provides precise math definitions in English and Spanish, both in print and as an audio clip. Click Vocabulary for lesson vocabulary definitions. Click the arrow to view the definition and see an example. Click Expand All to show all the definitions. Select Spanish for vocabulary definitions and audio in Spanish. Notice that the glossary icon shows the entire glossary, whereas the lesson vocabulary icon shows only the necessary vocabulary for a particular lesson. Key Concepts displays the Essential Understanding and key concepts of the lesson. Math Tools Interactive Math Tools give students the ability to visualize concepts and manipulate math tools on their computers or on an interactive whiteboard. You can use this feature to create more dynamic classroom presentations. Math Tools not only support and extend what is taught in the lesson but also aid in the development of the mathematical practices, such as, Use appropriate tools strategically, and Reason quantitatively. 7

8 Assessment The digital lessons allow students to test their knowledge using the Self Quiz. To open a lesson Self Quiz, click Assessment. Use these questions to check what students have learned during the lesson. Click the forward arrow to check responses for each question. MathXL for School Course Management Tools Math XL for School exercises provide additional practice at the middle and end of every chapter and are accessible from the Chapter Table of Contents. Click the link to view each exercise. Examples and tutorials support every problem and, as students complete problems, they receive instant feedback. Now, look at some of the online tools you can use to manage your course and save you time. The online Lesson Planner makes it easy to plan lessons that are fully aligned to the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics. With this tool, you can choose content that aligns to the standard you are teaching. PowerAlgebra.com and PowerGeometry.com also provide course management tools that allow you to automatically track students progress and use data to personalize instruction. Whether you integrate the digital path with print materials for blended instruction or use it as a stand-alone digital course, you can incorporate PowerAlgebra.com and PowerGeometry.com into your classroom learning environment to deliver dynamic instruction.
