40 Artist statement Bob Eikelboom graduated from the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague (KABK) in He was the youngest artist ever to graduate from KABK. His work has been shown in group exhibitions at the GEM in The Hague, Dürst Britt & Mayhew, The Hague, Le Plafond Project Space Amsterdam (duo with Martin Kippenberger), at Biennale de Jeune Creation and the Bonnefantenmuseum in Maastricht. Recently he had his first solo exhibition at Boetzelaer Nispen in Amsterdam. In October 2014 he won the Dutch Royal Prize for Painting. His work is represented in private and public collections including the Gemeentemuseum The Hague, Bonnefantenmuseum in Maastricht and the KRC Collection in Amsterdam. He currently lives and works in The Hague, and will start his Master at the Royal Academy of Arts in London this fall. He is represented by Boetzelaer Nispen, Amsterdam and Barbara Seiler, Zurich. Bob Eikelboom s varied practice offers various solutions to problems a painter faces. In the period around and directly after his graduation from the KABK The Hague in 2013 his work was mainly concerned with problems involving the monochrome. He came up with a wide range of works that were both monochromes and the opposite. Referring to the ever shifting role of this niche in contemporary painting, from political statements in the days of Malewich and Rodchenko, to the highly spiritual in the days of Rothko and Newmann to the monochrome s current role in more market driven painting. More recently Eikelboom s solutions have been taken out of this context to allow them to exist as individual statements within a wider and more playful practice. An example of his analyses of the monochrome is a group of curved monochrome canvases he made in 2013, that through the conditions of their shape would always cast a shadow upon themselves, therefore posing the question to the viewer what aspects of a painting can be understood as the image. Another example is a series of works called monochrome in progress where he devised a way of stacking colours of paint in a very shallow tank. This tank was hermetically sealed and presented as a painting. As the paint could not dry is would inevitably become a monochrome. An ongoing series that is also descendent from his analysis of the monochrome consist of works that study the nature of light. Large, round-shaped paintings that morph into the gallery space remind of, but are not influenced by, the Light and Space artists like Craig Kaufmann and Billy Al Bengston of the early West Coast art scene. Similar to the Los Angeles Finish Fetish tradition of using car lacquer Eikelboom works with paint used in the car industry, the name of the car paint providing the title of the work. The effect of the chosen car paints, that assume a different colour in every given light condition and from every possible angle is profound. The desire to create a process that can stretch into infinity drives this body of work, allowing the painting to transform with the influence of light and the perspective of the viewer.

41 Eikelbooms magnet works, shown for the first time at Art Rotterdam in March 2014, originated from the painters desire to have a more flexible approach to creating compositions. A flexibility normally solely belonging to the realm of digital image making. The works defy many of our fixed expectations from paintings as they stretch the potential to become something else that normally ends when a painting leaves the studio, into infinity. In this form of painting Eikelboom uses a wide range of subject matter. References range from Rene Daniels to Lamborgini, also emblematic referrals to his earlier works are often incorporated. Apart from his practice as a painter he has recently also created a few site specific installations and sculptures. These include an underground installation at Boetzelaer Nispen, shown in December 2014 in which he created an underground world in which aquatic life thrived. This world was visible through 3 manholes placed throughout the gallery. The works aimed to redefine the physical space that contained his paintings.
