1 UNIT 3 Sessin 1: hw can we measure well-being? Age range: 8-12 years Outline Pupils will learn abut sme ways in which well-being is quantitatively measured. They will ask and answer questins abut a set f tabulated data fr the UK and the fur Yung Lives cuntries: Ethipia, India, Peru and Viet Nam. 2 Activity 1.1 (25 min) Oxfam Educatin Shw slide 3 f the Unit 3 Slideshw (Sessins 1 3) and ask pupils: Hw can we measure well-being? Depending n their existing knwledge and understanding, yu may need t spend sme additinal time discussing what we mean by well-being. Yu may need t prmpt pupils by prviding sme examples such as being healthy r having enugh fd t eat. Think: Ask pupils t think abut the questin n their wn fr abut a minute. Pair: Give pupils a cuple f minutes t cmpare their ideas. Share: Spend a few minutes sharing sme f the pupils suggestins as a whle grup. Yu might like t recrd their ideas n the bard. Nte that Unit 1 Sessins 5 and 6 supprt pupils in develping their understanding f inequality and ptential well-being indicatrs. Shw slides 4 t 15 t prvide examples and explanatins f sme different indicatrs which gvernments arund the wrld use t measure the well-being f the peple in a cuntry. Distribute cpies f the resurce sheet: Measuring well-being. This table has selected data frm each f the fur Yung Lives cuntries (Ethipia, India, Peru and Viet Nam) and the UK. Differentiated cpies f the table are prvided, with the riginal data runded t ne r tw decimal places and t the nearest whle number. The differentiated tables are als prvided in slides 16 t 18. Say that this data is calculated by the Wrld Bank, an rganisatin which lends mney t different cuntries t supprt ecnmic grwth and develpment, fr example majr infrastructure prjects r educatin prgrammes. The Wrld Bank als uses different measures t wrk ut hw well a cuntry is ding. Supprt pupils t understand the meanings f the different measures included. Ask the pupils t lk at the Measuring well-being table. Ask them sme questins abut the data, such as: What is the life expectancy in Peru? What percentage f the ppulatin has access t electricity in Ethipia? What is the difference between the number f Internet users per 100 peple in the UK cmpared t the number in India? Which cuntry has the lwest life expectancy? Ask pupils t wrk in pairs t cme up with their wn questins abut the data. Allw time fr the pupils t share their questins and try t answers the questins f thers. Activity 1.2 (25 min) The idea fr this activity cmes frm the bk If the Wrld Were a Village by David J Smith and Shelagh Armstrng (A & C Publishers Ltd; 2Rev Ed editin ISBN ). Published in 2004, this bk explains facts abut the glbal ppulatin by representing the wrld as a village f just 100 peple. Display the Measuring well-being table again. Ask pupils if it is easy r difficult t understand. Discuss ther ways in which the data culd be presented, fr example by using a bar r pie chart.

3 Lk at the resurce sheet: Hw many peple? Explain that the sum f the ppulatin f Ethipia, India, Peru, Viet Nam and the UK is 1,530 millin. Ask pupils t imagine that all f these peple were represented by a village f 100 residents. The diagram shws what the make-up f this village wuld be. Explain that we call this an infgraphic. An infgraphic is a chart r diagram that represents sme data r infrmatin visually. Ask pupils which they think is easier t understand, data in a table r data in an infgraphic like this. Explain that we culd use an infgraphic like this t represent ther indicatrs. Say that sme f the indicatrs in the table are measured as a percentage which means the number per 100 peple. Nw give pupils cpies f: Which is which? This activity sheet uses similar infgraphics t represent sme f the cuntry data frm the Measuring well-being table. Pupils need t use the table t wrk ut which cuntry is being represented in each diagram. Answers: A = Ethipia, B = India, C = Viet Nam, D = India Nw ask pupils t use ther indicatrs expressed as percentages frm the Measuring well-being table t create their wn infgraphics n the activity sheet: Shw me the data. If they have indicatrs expressed as decimals, ask them t first rund their numbers t the nearest whle number. The activity culd als be made easier by fcusing n a smaller number f well-being indicatrs. Further ideas Pupils culd carry ut further runding activities using their Measuring well-being tables. Pupils culd cllect well-being data frm their class r schl r use the Internet t research ther well-being indicatrs. They culd then create infgraphics t represent the data. Pupils culd explre different ways f representing the infrmatin visually using dried pulses, sticky ntes r beads. Pupils culd explre the use f infgraphics in the media. Terms f use Cpyright Oxfam GB / Yung Lives Yu may use these phtgraphs and assciated infrmatin fr the educatinal purpses at yur educatinal institutin. With each use, yu must credit the phtgrapher named fr that image and Oxfam and Yung Lives. Yu may nt use images and assciated infrmatin fr cmmercial purpses r utside yur educatinal institutin. All infrmatin assciated with these images relates t the date and time that prject wrk tk place.
